BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Opens Strong In China

That $1 billion milestone inches closer and closer. Christopher Nolan's final Bat-flick premiered in China yesterday - Aug. 27 - and earned $4.5 million, making it Warner Bros.' highest 2D opening locally. Update: The figures are in for TASM too, and it opened even bigger..

The Dark Knight Rises opened to $4.5 million on Monday when it made its big screen debut in China. There had been doubts as to whether the movie would open at all in the build up to its release, but now it can lay claim to beating all of the previous Harry Potter movies (except the 3D finale), making it Warner Bros. highest 2D opening in the Country.

The movie should now definitely reach that $1 billion mark over the next couple of weeks, or perhaps even sooner if it holds strong, as it now sits on $940 million worldwide. As we reported previously, The Amazing Spider-Man also premiered last night, but the figures are not in for that yet. We will update as soon as they are and we can see if the Spider can beat the Bat on opening night

And here's that update! According to Variety, The Amazing Spider-Man made $5.46m in its Chinese bow, beating The Dark Knight Rises' $4.5m.

I wish we can see the English subtitles for the Chinese voice overs!
CaptainObvious - 8/28/2012, 9:58 AM
I'm going to see again this weekend. This time in IMAX.
ksommer - 8/28/2012, 10:08 AM
Opened strong!?!? Spider-Man beat it!
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 8/28/2012, 10:09 AM
Duh Spider-man beat it ksommer. Asians LOVE Spider-man.
GoILL - 8/28/2012, 10:10 AM
Good news for WB.
dezdigi - 8/28/2012, 10:14 AM
Make it rain!
tonytony - 8/28/2012, 10:14 AM
And spiderman is in 3d. I think Warner bros have learnt their lesson and from what I understand Man of steel is being changed to 3-d. Still well done to the Dark knight. The billion is within its grasp and i predict a finish of 1.1-1.2billion for it.
CaptainObvious - 8/28/2012, 10:14 AM
Spider-Man is very popular over in Asian markets. It's no surprise it's doing better than Batman.
rockerdude22 - 8/28/2012, 10:18 AM
Nice to see it's still doing well! It would be a great accomplishment to have two Bat flicks cross the billion mark. Honestly, I feel bad for whoever has to take over the Batman reigns once WB reboots it.
hope420 - 8/28/2012, 10:19 AM
I had to watch it online so I wasn't able to help with it. Before you hate on me I work all the time and when I was off I couldn't find a ride so I gave up and movie2k'd it.:/
iJackSparrow - 8/28/2012, 10:21 AM
Congrats to The Amazing Spider-Man. It still has a shot of topping Spider-Man 2's 783.8m worldwide box office.

And I think that this news is sort of one sided. Both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises were just released in China, The Amazing Spider-Man is also making more money than TDKR there, I believe a change in the title should be in order.
bfprimetime - 8/28/2012, 10:24 AM
If Spiderman made 5.4 and Batman made 4.5 then that means more people saw Batman. So how is Spiderman more popular?
RorMachine - 8/28/2012, 10:28 AM
iJackSparrow, the article was created before the TASM figures were in, when they hit shortly after I updated, and I have now added an update to the teaser also.
bfprimetime - 8/28/2012, 10:34 AM
My comment does make sense because your comparing a 3d movie to a 2d movie. 2d movies in China are 100 yuan which is about 15 dollars while 3d is 150 yuan which is 24 dollars that's 9 dollars extra per person. Those numbers mean that if Spidey made less then a mil more, then more people saw Batman.
tonytony - 8/28/2012, 10:36 AM
good year for CBM's. whats really bad is that the chinese govt movie body put the releases side by side to try and sabotage both these movies successes because they were western. Both these movies could and should have made even more than these great numbers. i quite liked the spiderman film so hopefully this helps it get a sequel. And props for an epic trilogy. Hopefully next year the studios put a bit of pressure on the chinese government to stop this protectionist strategy.
dadisatish - 8/28/2012, 10:38 AM
rises..........
Maximus101 - 8/28/2012, 10:43 AM
I'm going to see it it one more time in the IMAX within the next week. Loved TDKR!
bfprimetime - 8/28/2012, 10:44 AM
I loved both movies so I was just trying to state the real numbers, not hating on any of them.
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 10:44 AM
Sweet ... big Thumbs up to both movies
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 10:45 AM
We all want that 1B for TDKR ... why is it taking so long ?
BlackfuryRises - 8/28/2012, 10:46 AM
Bfprimetime But that would mean EVERYONE who saw Spider-Man would see it in 3D. I don't find that entirely possible or logical. Maybe most of them for sure. But not EVERY person.
WebHeadedHero - 8/28/2012, 10:47 AM
yeah webhead!!!
thewonderer - 8/28/2012, 10:53 AM
For the life of me, I can't understand these inaccuracy complaints of Nolans Bat Trilogy.

But whatevs, gonna see it my 5th time tommorrow
bfprimetime - 8/28/2012, 10:55 AM
@blackfuryrises I was stationed in China for 6 months I can guarantee you any movie 3d movie that comes out in China will only be watched by the Chinese in 3d. Also western movies are limited in theatres released in China so they don't have the option to watch a 3d movie in 2d or 3d. It's watch it in 3d or not at all,the Chinese government does that so they can make as much money off it as possible,China has the highest ticket prices in the world.
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 10:58 AM
Wow, some of you are so eager about the new bat film while the last one is still in theaters ... what will you do if there wont be a next one ?
PapaMidnight - 8/28/2012, 11:00 AM
Not bad for a "fail", huh?
marvel72 - 8/28/2012, 11:05 AM
really can't understand why people go to the cinema more than once to see the same movie,if i had the money to see five films i would go & see five different ones.

you can watch it as many times you want when it comes out on blu-ray.

Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:06 AM
@Undead

IF they decide t omake a new batfilm to tie-in with JLA at least they should make it to be the last one of the tie-in movies .... because even if it is Batman ... people can get sick of him if the studious try too hard ... NO disrespect for the bat ...
BlackfuryRises - 8/28/2012, 11:06 AM
@bfprimetime ah well that sucks. 3D's just getting shoved down everyone's throats.
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:07 AM
sorry for my spelling ... a little drunk here
Equivocal - 8/28/2012, 11:16 AM
in other news; according to Box Office Mojo, these are the figures for Japan:

The Avengers - $18 mill in first week
the batman - $21 mill in first month

and Jeremmy Renner.... ??

XD

Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:20 AM
@Undead

Im not sure ... We have to accept the fact that whether we want to or not it will be compared to MCU ... Bats and Supes are legend without competition ... Cyborg ... maybe they will say it is a little to similar to IM ... WW .. maybe too similar to Thor ... Im just sayin that maybe those movies (If they are ever made) wont be as successful. Now GL was ... I dont know, I dont hate it as much as others but it wasnt THAT good. Maybe a Flash movie would be interestin but I remember what one DC writer said ... that all of JLA are the same exact person with a different colored costume ... thats why Marvel was more interesting for people back then and thats why DC movies have to be handled very cautiously
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:22 AM
Aquaman ... I dont want to talk about him .. he is just too rediculous
marvel72 - 8/28/2012, 11:23 AM
@ nomis

nope i've never seen a movie twice at the theatre, its a case for me i've seen it at the theatre i can wait now for the blu-ray.

i've experienced the sight & sound of it on a massive screen i don't really need to see it again because i already know what its like.

i suppose the length of the film doesn't help,i.e the dark knight rises nearly 3 hours long sitting there for another 3 hours for a movie i've already seen seems pointless to me.
REDSTORM - 8/28/2012, 11:26 AM
Honestly, watching a movie in Hi Def on my laptop with headphones beats the theater experience for me. With good headphones you get even better sound than at the theater and while a laptop screen is small, it's personal so you get to see even more detail than at the theater.
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:28 AM
That is true but Namor is not a necessary part of the Avengers :D
Equivocal - 8/28/2012, 11:30 AM
@marvel72

I agree with you, specially when the movie is a tad too serious and boring, it felt more like the rise of Bruce Wayne than the bat, who btw was not in the movie for much of the film, bane couldn't be hear clearly (most of the time) and after being told that it was close to a "marterpiece" (*rolls eyes*) and it was NOT !

I understand why some ppl went to see twice, you gotta pay close attention to bane so you can understand his mumbling...
rocky - 8/28/2012, 11:35 AM
I can't believe folk are claiming they saw this film this weekend in a packed theater. Nothing this weekend should've had a packed theater with the totals that were reported.
rebellion - 8/28/2012, 11:36 AM
'ijacksparrow' is a synonym for DELUSION.
GoILL - 8/28/2012, 11:39 AM
Anybody else surprised that grif hasn't come in to comment on his two favorite films this year?
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:45 AM
AND Namor doesnt wear an orange mail/shirt or whatever and green pants ... he is more of a ... naked man :D

And he doesnt talk to fish :D

IMPERIUS REX !!! :D
shawnb - 8/28/2012, 11:51 AM
Why can't we all........

shawnb - 8/28/2012, 11:51 AM
:)
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 11:52 AM
Thats a huge batarang ...
AmericanPsychoWolf - 8/28/2012, 11:57 AM
While I have problems with both films (TASM the most but thats Sony's fault)I'm glad they're both doing well. The no. 1 and 2 movies of 2012 are CBM!
shawnb - 8/28/2012, 11:57 AM
Thanks....
dwaynejohnsonsfromundahcheesepanini - 8/28/2012, 12:04 PM
@Marvel72

Thought the same thing when kids were on here posting they'd seen Avengers 5 & 6 times in the theater.
UltimateHunt - 8/28/2012, 12:08 PM
@marvel72
i totally agree with you, but i would see the movie at least twice(Avengers) but more than that well that means i got no life. i mean to see a movie like 7 times with that cash you can go see other movies or buy something for your girlfriend or your self (because i guess we got teens and adults here right?) those people either got no life or they care soooooo much for the box office that they want Batman to get more box office money which is ridiculos but well you know DC fans are.
Maxi91291 - 8/28/2012, 12:13 PM
Well maybe it is about supporting the movie rather than having no life .. I mean I went to see both TA and TDKR twice and it cost me about 28 euros but I dont regret it ... Im a big CBM fan
GoILL - 8/28/2012, 12:15 PM
@UltimateHunt
The DC fans are not the only ones I've seen numerous post where people said they have seen any of three cbm's released in the last few months 5 or more times. I personally will only go to the movies twice during the theatrical run and save any more viewings until I am able to watch at home.
