BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: Zack Snyder Describes Seeing The Trinity In Costume And More

The Batman Vs. Superman director has shared his thoughts on seeing the stand-ins for Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot all suited up on set, and comments on a possible timeline for the first reveal of the new suits as well as how the idea to have Superman fight Batman in this movie came about...

While we all anxiously wait for the first image of Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot all suited up as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, Forbes got the chance to catch up with director Zack Snyder to quiz him on the Man of Steel follow-up. When asked what led to him deciding to include the Caped Crusader, he replied: "I gotta be honest, it definitely was a thing that… after Man of Steel finished and we started talking about what would be in the next movie, I started subtly mentioning that it would be cool if he faced Batman. In the first meeting, it was like, “Maybe Batman?” Maybe at the end of the second movie, some Kryptonite gets delivered to Bruce Wayne’s house or something. Like in a cryptic way, that’s the first time we see him. But then, once you say it out loud, right? You’re in a story meeting talking about, like, who should [Superman] fight if he fought this giant alien threat Zod who was basically his equal physically, from his planet, fighting on our turf… You know, who to fight next? The problem is, once you say it out loud, then it’s kind of hard to go back, right? Once you say, “What about Batman?” then you realize, “Okay, that’s a cool idea. What else?” I mean, what do you say after that? …But I’m not gonna say at all that when I took the job to do Man of Steel that I did it in a subversive way to get to Batman. I really believe that only after contemplating who could face [Superman] did Batman come into the picture." These comments make it clear that Batman and Superman will indeed come to blows, and his remarks about Kryptonite are very interesting indeed. A random thought for where the sequel could have gone or something we'll actually see?

"We just went through Superman’s 75th, and it was very exciting… and to me, it was just really awesome. And the idea of having the Batman 75th and the Wonder Woman 75th together is kind of an amazing thing, too," Snyder said when talk turned to what it's been like to see the new costumes for Batman Vs. Superman, with the three iconic heroes all standing alongside each other in live-action. "The thing also that’s really fascinating for me is that, even just in the tests we’ve been doing, the costumes, right? You basically have Batman and Superman — and this is without Ben [Affleck] and Henry [Cavill] in the costumes, but just like the stand-ins, just testing to see what the costumes look like. And you have them standing there and they’re standing in the same shot — and then we have Wonder Woman, you know, all three of them in the same shot. Even just for a test, you really have to go, “Wow, that’s crazy!” Not only is it the first time that I’m seeing them, it’s the first time they’ve ever existed together on screen in a movie. And that’s kind of a huge deal. Even just Batman and Superman standing next to each other… [I]t’s kind of epic. You do sort of sense the weight of the pop culture iconography jumping out of its skin when you’re standing there looking at the two of them and Wonder Woman. It’s crazy. But it’s fun. I mean, I have the first photo, I’ve got it in my archive because I was like, “Okay, I better keep this, it’s gonna be worth something,” [laughs]!"

Now, the question we're all desperate to know the answer to is when exactly we'll see the Trinity officially revealed. With the release date pushed back to 2016, it's inevitably going to be later than expected, but anticipation is at an all-time high. Will we have to wait until as late as Comic-Con in July? Sadly, Snyder was giving nothing away! "Unfortunately, I don’t even know the timeline… Because the movie takes place so far from now, it’s hard to know exactly. That all gets tied to marketing and strategies for the movie. It’s not just a free-for-all, which I’d love it to be. Because I take a picture of the suit with my camera– I’m actually staring at one right now in my office. And it’s just massive on my wall in my office and it’s epic, let me tell you! And I’m like, “God, I want to send this to the Internet immediately.” But I know I’m not allowed to [laughs]! I do value the sort of excitement of the way the film is [revealed]… the pieces that are released and sort of trickle out to everybody, and those reveals are exciting milestones for us." So man of steel 1 could have had a batman cameo if things went to plan, that wouldn't have been a bad after credits scene, still bugs me though that with the first movie in the interviews they were all like "oh yeah superman is the first superhero in this universe he inspires everyone" and then for this movie "oh batmans been around for a few years before superman. Yeah we totally planned this." Yeah right. Just make a good movie snyder
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:22 AM
Hmm... even if the costumes are amazing we still have to have Affleck (you I can get behind) and Gadot (UGH!!!) in them to make them work.

ReeferInferno - 4/17/2014, 7:23 AM
Just not feeling that excited for this shame really.
McNyagano - 4/17/2014, 7:23 AM
Just reveal the suits already! It's bad enough you delayed the film.
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:25 AM
Please call it World's Finest. Batman vs. Superman sounds extremely generic and stupid.
Brainiac13 - 4/17/2014, 7:26 AM
This is showing on Sky Movies in the UK.

Doopie - 4/17/2014, 7:26 AM
get it right zach!

i am gonna watch cap3 as well but this movie will get my money first
charlie2094 - 4/17/2014, 7:27 AM
Hopefully it's not too long until we see the suits!! Been hearing so much about them..imagine it can't be long, like with Man of Steel, they won't want set pics ruining them first
Brainiac13 - 4/17/2014, 7:27 AM

Yeah....its pure crap.
TheRationalNerd - 4/17/2014, 7:27 AM
And they say Cavill has put on even more muscle mass for this one!
Moohika - 4/17/2014, 7:27 AM
I don't blame you, there has not really been anything to get excited about, not yet anyway. A costume reveal could change that.
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:28 AM

Despite how much I dislike MoS and how the cast, director, etc. have to pretend Goyer's mess was anything over than shit, I'll definitely watch that because I love Cavill as Superman, casting wise.
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:29 AM
Also, let's hope they keep some MoS tracks in this film. Zimmer did a brilliant job with the music.
TheRationalNerd - 4/17/2014, 7:30 AM
2016's going to be the sequel to this year for CBM's

Batman vs. Superman
X-Men: Apocalypse
Captain America 3
(possibly) Doctor Strange or Black Panther
The Amazing Spider-Man 3
Star Wars Spin-Off
Wrath of the Planet of the Apes
Prometheus 2

Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:31 AM
How the hell do those last three count as CBM?
SuperCat - 4/17/2014, 7:34 AM
I don't condone violence, but someone should knock him over the head and steal his camera. SHOW US THE PICTURE!!

Lol, imagine if the suits are bad and how much backlash they'd receive after all the hype.
Starfox - 4/17/2014, 7:35 AM
Interestingly Enough... Mark Hughes wrote this Article.
JoeMomma29 - 4/17/2014, 7:35 AM
Can we please see the suits already!
JatevinM - 4/17/2014, 7:36 AM
Im a bit put off by the fact that he refers to them as "the two of them and Wonder Woman" and not "the three of them"
DarkGrifter - 4/17/2014, 7:37 AM
Moohika - 4/17/2014, 7:37 AM
Snyder I'm going to break into your office and steal that picture!
TheRationalNerd - 4/17/2014, 7:38 AM

Moohika - 4/17/2014, 7:39 AM
Because even though she's in it, it's still focuses on Batman and Superman. Maybe she has a small role to introduce her that could lead to her own movie.
AlexanderLykins - 4/17/2014, 7:40 AM
I want more news from this movie, but not invested enough to care.
Brainiac13 - 4/17/2014, 7:45 AM

I bet you secretly love it. ;)
MrBatmor - 4/17/2014, 7:47 AM
batman cant use kryptonite because it doesn't exist right? and even if it does we saw superman over come that weakness during the tentacle fight in mos... he practically flew in krypton conditions...hmm this is interesting...
DeathstrokeTerminator - 4/17/2014, 7:48 AM
When will they reveal the goddamn suits?! It's killing me!
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:49 AM

Lol, no.
Nomis - 4/17/2014, 7:50 AM
superotherside - 4/17/2014, 7:50 AM
Someone break into his office quick steal that picture!

grif - 4/17/2014, 7:54 AM
disney does not even need to make marvel movies to break wbs back. dc is getting smoked by fox and sony alone.
OpticBlastWins - 4/17/2014, 7:54 AM
Mr Snyder we all would appreciate it if you showed us the frackin suits already. No need for a big reveal. Just do it
ComicsBornAndBred - 4/17/2014, 7:54 AM
Way to be a dick and describe but not show. Anyway, DC you're getting bitchslapped by marvel and beat up by even fox and sony
Omarvls - 4/17/2014, 7:55 AM
I think the first scene with Superman Batman and Wonder Woman will be as Epic as the Avengers one in the battle of New York if not more
Klone - 4/17/2014, 7:56 AM
I really am not looking forward to this film.
KallarkKent - 4/17/2014, 7:57 AM
Just got to be patient and see how this one turns out. After reading some TASM2 reviews I am a little concerned of how BvS might turn out if they try to do too much in one movie.
