Ben Affleck On How His BATMAN Will Differ To Christian Bale's, Internet Reaction And More

Ben Affleck talks in detail about his reaction to the negative responses about him being cast as the Caped Crusader in Batman Vs. Superman, how his "older and wiser version" will differ to Christian Bale's, and whether he views this role as a way of making up for Daredevil. Check it out!

"I expected that reaction," Ben Affleck told Playboy Magazine when they asked how he felt to see some of the slightly more extreme reactions to the news that Zack Snyder had chosen him to play Batman in his follow-up to Man of Steel. "Warner Bros. told me, 'You should know what you’re getting into.' They showed me the reactions to other folks who had been cast in these roles. They said this is how it tends to play out initially." As for how they managed to convince him to sign up for a role in the movie, the Argo director added, "When they asked if I would be Batman, I told them I don’t see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off. They said I’d fit well into how they were going to approach the character and asked me to look at what the writer-director, Zack Snyder, was doing. The stuff was incredible."

The last few years have obviously seen Affleck taken seriously as both an actor and director thanks to movies like Argo and The Town, so why on Earth would he agree to once again suit up as a comic book character? It's all down to Zack Snyder! "It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially. I don’t want to give away too much, but the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn’t compete with the Bale and Chris Nolan Batman but still exists within the Batman canon. It will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill’s Superman character." It definitely sounds as if Batman and Superman's relationship will be an interesting one, while these comments make it clear that this universe is indeed separate to Nolan's.

"I understand I’m at a disadvantage with the internet," Affleck responded when he was once again asked how he felt to see petitions and raging editorials about him playing Batman. As it turns out, he's making it a priority to ensure that this movie isn't a repeat of Daredevil! "If I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I’d be out there picketing myself. [laughs] Why would I make the movie if I didn’t think it was going to be good and that I can be good in it? The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got fucked up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman." How do you guys feel about these comments? Sound off below!

At least he knows that Daredevil sucked
JoeMomma29 - 12/3/2013, 1:22 PM
Benny boy gets it! Yeah if he is man enough to admit that his portrayal of DD sucked then he deserves a fair shake at playing Batman!
SpiderParker - 12/3/2013, 1:28 PM
The guy is really honest, I am sure he can pull it off. But I have doubt on the movie itself unless Snyder learned from the mistakes but all the rumors just makes me believe otherwise.
Spideyguy94 - 12/3/2013, 1:28 PM
Daredevil is a movie that got majorly f*cked over by some dick producer. The directors cut on the other hand is fantastic, it's one of the better superhero movies (in my top 10 CBMs) and affleck is great in the movie, he perfectly captures what makes Matt Murdock such a great character imo.
MrCBM56 - 12/3/2013, 1:29 PM
Nothing new but still excited.
DarkGrifter - 12/3/2013, 1:31 PM
Ben has faith in Zack Snyder and, even after acknowledging Daredevil, he still has faith in himself.
So far so good I'd say.
ManofSteel23 - 12/3/2013, 1:32 PM
Daredevil came out when I was just a kid,and at the time I loved it,yeah you can look back now and actually see its faults because you understand more, but it was good for its time, especially for a kid
ItsATrap - 12/3/2013, 1:35 PM
He only regrets Daredevil. Just that movie. No other regrets.

MexicanSexyman - 12/3/2013, 1:36 PM
@SlaveMasterFlexXx, yeah me too.
Ignition - 12/3/2013, 1:39 PM
Love it. He's going to do great.
Zordan - 12/3/2013, 1:43 PM
daredevil is bad, but he will kill bats, cant wait
drfate - 12/3/2013, 1:45 PM
I think he'll do fine as Batman. I'm just concerned that there will be a lot less Superman in his own flick!
MarkV - 12/3/2013, 1:45 PM
A different version of Batman = comic book Batman?

blvdnoise - 12/3/2013, 1:46 PM
He knows what he's getting into.. 2015 will be something special
AC1 - 12/3/2013, 1:46 PM
Daredevil wasn't even that bad... pretty much a "middle-ground" CBM.
Fastestmanalive - 12/3/2013, 1:47 PM
Daredevil was an awesome movie.

Oh and the only movie u really regret is Daredevil?

Isn't that the movie u met ur wife Jennifer Garner on? Yea Ben u might want to rethink that one.
wcwpoet - 12/3/2013, 1:48 PM
I don't get the Affleck hate. I think he's a solid choice as Batman. As for Daredevil I didn't hate that movie, Affleck wasn't the reason that movie did poorly. All of the performances were solid save for his current wife Jennifer Garner. Her and that awful fight in the middle of a day in a playground was flat out terrible. But Colin Farrell was good as Bulls-eye Michael Clark Duncan nailed the Kingpin, and Affleck wasn't bad as Daredevil. I'll willing to give the guy a shot, it's Zack Snyder and David Goyer's script that gives me reason for concern. That and the fact that they're trying to rush to a Justice League movie.
WingDingaLing - 12/3/2013, 1:48 PM
So finally, a Batman from the comics but placed in the real world? I like ;)
ALmazing - 12/3/2013, 1:48 PM
So Batfleck will be to the DC universe what Gandalf is to LOTRs? Should I be nervous that he doesn't regret Gigli?
SuperCat - 12/3/2013, 1:48 PM
It takes a big man to admit your movie sucked. Respect.
batman1216 - 12/3/2013, 1:51 PM
I think he means that since he is a fan of the comics and the character so much, its failure impacted him the greatest.
SimyJo - 12/3/2013, 1:52 PM
I don't mind (and quite like) the idea of a world-weary veteran Batman..... but he still needs to be able to kick-ass!. I do NOT want Kingdom Come's crippled Bruce Wayne in a Batcave controlling Bat-Drone Guardians.
FlyingSeel - 12/3/2013, 1:52 PM
This mother [frick]er doesn't regret Gigli at all? Makes me question his judgement.
third3ye - 12/3/2013, 1:55 PM
"The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil."

Did Ben forget about Gigli?
Facade - 12/3/2013, 1:55 PM
As if fanboys really had any say in it anyway.
VISIONaryNPa - 12/3/2013, 1:57 PM
He's so candid with his answers, and brutally honest. I'm extremely excited about his portrayal of Batman. Although I felt Man of Steel to be a little underwhelming, i feel the sequel will have what I need. Snyder, make sure you put in SOME comedy, just a little bit.

please take note from The Dark Knight Returns (Part 1 and 2) (animated film) and some of the JLA films, idk just have batman be a little witty! Christ.
ALmazing - 12/3/2013, 1:57 PM
I added 2 more words to this tittle based on Mr Affleck's assessment of the character:

"Man of Steel 2: Battle the Wise Older Knight in the Darkness of Black Night at the Blackest Darkest Hour Within"
SimyJo - 12/3/2013, 1:57 PM
@FlyingSeel: - Yeeaaaaah, I'd let that example of Gigli slide actually, if only for the job perks:

VISIONaryNPa - 12/3/2013, 1:58 PM
and wait, yeah, 4th, 5th, and 7th, the motion on him not regret Gigli? DAFUQ?
Moohika - 12/3/2013, 2:00 PM
Yeah you tell 'em Batfleck!
MercwithMouth - 12/3/2013, 2:01 PM
I liked Daredevil, it had it problems, but was an entertaining flick. Affleck should make a good Batman, sadly he has to share the film with lame-ass Superman, but oh well. Maybe I'll actually enjoy a film with Supes in it.
Moohika - 12/3/2013, 2:01 PM
He doesn't regret Gigli cuz he got to hit that prime J Lo ass! That's why LOL
Pasto - 12/3/2013, 2:04 PM
Yoss, that looks...delicious.
Brainiac13 - 12/3/2013, 2:04 PM
Extended cut of DD was good....but the heart and soul of DD from the comics was missing.

Jhuntdaprodigy - 12/3/2013, 2:05 PM
Afleck's performance is not what I'm worried about. I'm more concerned with the writer and the director. I so hope they don't [frick] this up. If they can get this right, then it has potential to be the greatest comic book film of all time. I know it's definitely a stretch. Goyer and Snyder don't inspire as much faith as Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige, and I'm still trying to understand why Bruce Timm and Paul Dini weren't contacted to work on these films a long time ago, but I'm crossing my fingers that they will nail this.
ds9epicfan - 12/3/2013, 2:05 PM
He's matured over the years and made some serious dramatic movies lately,so I'll have faith in what he's saying about how he's gonna play Batman in this movie.Only time will tell if he was the right choice!
TheRationalNerd - 12/3/2013, 2:06 PM
Can't wait for comic con 2014!!!! :D Sooooo many surprises are coming our way guys!!!
Vegeta - 12/3/2013, 2:07 PM
His 'I've got this shit' attitude towards it does give me hope, but if he [frick]s up, its going to make it 10x worst.
