Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson On BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson On BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

EW recently sat down with Oscar nominee costume designer Michael Wilkison who discuss details about American Hustle and briefly talked about Zack Snyder's upcoming Batman vs Superman film and when we might expect to see the new costumes. Read on for more...

What can we expect from those Batman vs. Superman costumes? Will you stay true to the original designs for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman?
"I’m not really at liberty to talk about the details of everything, but suffice to say we really respect the histories of all of these characters. We’re all very reverent about the iconic graphic nature of these characters and their costumes. We see ourselves as part of the natural lineage of how these characters are being portrayed through out the ages and our goal is to create something relevant and exciting for today’s audiences and something that works for this thrilling cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is creating."

What kind of research are you doing? What’s the process like when you’re designing something so iconic?
You really dive into the source material. We’re looking at all of the different ways these characters have been portrayed over the ages. We’re looking hard into Zack’s script and working out what makes sense as far as telling the story — who these people really are and what they represent, how to make sense of them in today’s world. It’s an interesting, multilayered design challenge."

When do you think the public might get their first peek at the costumes?
"Ooh! Our film just got pushed. It’s now not being released until June or July 2016. I don’t know. We’re been having some interesting camera tests and photo shoots so far. I’m not exactly sure what dates we’re going to get them released, but I’m sure Warner Bros. has it all worked out."

With production already underway in Michigan, it won't be long until the pictures of the new costumes are released. Are you guys excited to see the new Batsuit, Wonder Woman's armour and the tweaked version of Superman's costume? Sound off your thoughts down below.

"Snyder will direct the film from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer, from a story co-created by Goyer and Snyder. Zack Snyder’s Superman/Batman film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, and also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film which will now be arriving in theaters May 6, 2016."

Knightrider - 1/29/2014, 4:19 PM
I guess it depends on when Affleck is on an open set, in costume. As production may have started he may not have a 'Bat-Scene' for a while so could be ages until we see costume

I wish this guy would design all the MCU and X-Men film's suits. Imagine Hawkeye with a mask similar to Nightowl.

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 5:07 PM
They'll have to show us the suit before long. There are clearly people far more anxious to see it than I am. :D
JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 5:14 PM
Amy Adams returning as Lois.. Dye your hair dark brown! For the love of...
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 5:16 PM
I'll suck your dick, if you show me the suits. And it wouldn't be gay, since I've got a downstairs mix up.
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 5:44 PM
You do know Lois was portrayed as a redhead before in comics, yes?
SnapperCarr - 1/29/2014, 5:50 PM
We need a brighter Superman suit.
SnapperCarr - 1/29/2014, 5:51 PM
For Wonder Woman I hope we get this:

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 5:52 PM
Oldgreg, Before.. Yes I know that. Just a matter of preference I guess. :P
SnapperCarr - 1/29/2014, 5:53 PM
For Batman I hope we get this:

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:04 PM
Yeah, I guess we'll all have slightly different preferences in things. I'm really just a hypocrite I guess, because I talk about not changing things, yet I think I know how best to change things. :P I'd have a bat suit that's lightweight, shows the bat physique, with black cape. very dark grey, organic somewhat glossy look to the outfit similar to Tim Burton's 1989 Batman. But it would allow him to turn his head. High tech belt. I'd lose the underwear look.
SuperCat - 1/29/2014, 6:05 PM
Can we get a sketch or somethin'?

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:12 PM
No. :P I'd photoshop-modify the one Snappercarr posted but then I'd probably get sued or something. Basically that suit, but darker, with less texture and seams, and a less-old-fashioned looking belt, and without the black underwear.
Himura - 1/29/2014, 6:15 PM

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:20 PM
As for WonderWoman, that's just the sort of full-body-armor look i hope they don't go with. But they probably will because it's "safer".
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 6:21 PM
Snapper: Well....I didn't bring it on over.
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 6:22 PM
Jedi: Same here, but Amy is hot enough, and a good enough actress, that I'll over look it.
JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:24 PM
The brighter Superman suit I completely agree with. We need a brighter Superman to go with it. :D I'm not talking about the actor, I mean the writing.
thebearjew - 1/29/2014, 6:27 PM
showith me-ith the goddamn batman suit

JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:33 PM
Pulled my comment. I actually creeped me out.
JediPhilosopher - 1/29/2014, 6:40 PM
Random thought inspired by my latest watch of Man of Steel: It's not okay to be emo. There, I said it. I felt I had to counter the vibe I get from that movie somehow.
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 6:48 PM
I guess throwing around words like emo are suppose to help your point, but what happens when you miss use it? Spiderman 3=emo, not MoS.
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 6:49 PM
Crazy kids these days.
TheGreenBastard - 1/29/2014, 6:58 PM
Look on the bright side though, Disneys Marvel Studios wil have two family friendly movies this there's that.
