TDKR's Anne Hathaway Has Some Advice For Our New 'Lex Luthor'

"Don’t be afraid to make it your own." Hathway, who played Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, offers some advice to her Rio 2 costar Jesse Eisenberg on bringing an iconic comic book character to life on the big screen.

Jesse Eisenberg being picked to play Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's sequel to Man Of Steel has to go down as one of the most controversial casting choices in recent memory. Though a few fans have since warmed to the idea, backlash is still pretty rampant on many forums. But -- as Anne Hathaway points out in the following video interview with Total Film -- he WAS cast for a reason. Here's what the former Selina Kyle/Catwoman had to say when asked what advice she'd give to Eisenberg after taking on such a huge CBM role.

“I wish I could say something, but it’s going to be his experience. Keep a journal, which I’m sure he does some version of that already, just to remember it. Don’t be afraid to make it your own. In my case, people criticized, criticized, criticized until they saw it, and then a lot of people liked what I did. Don’t listen to anyone, do your thing. They cast you for a reason. I think he’ll be remarkable, I’m excited to see it.”

Anne speaks the truth!

I'm personally looking forward to seeing what Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. I love unorthodox casting, especially when it turns out well.
SuperCat - 3/31/2014, 9:10 AM
Didn't really like her as Catwoman.
Doopie - 3/31/2014, 9:11 AM
grif's advice: 'don't do it'
ForeverPowerful - 3/31/2014, 9:12 AM
Listen to Selina Kyle.
Vegeta - 3/31/2014, 9:13 AM
I never doubted Hathaway as Catwoman, and I'm glad I didn't, because she knocked it out the park!

I agree
Highflyer - 3/31/2014, 9:15 AM
There is no denying that the casting for BVS has been surprising. When Ben was cast as Batman I was just so shocked because I didn't think he would take it. Now with Lex, I thought they would go with the typical lex so Jesse's casting took me by surprise.
Bekss - 3/31/2014, 9:16 AM
He's going to be a good character (maybe) named Lex Luthor, not the Lex Luthor from the comics.

CA:TWS is awesome. ;)
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 9:17 AM
Hell yea!! Anne shut all those got dang haters up! She nailed as CW imo. I'm sure Jesse's gonna nail it.No worries on my part.
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 9:17 AM
nailed it*
DaVinci31 - 3/31/2014, 9:18 AM
Is it April, yet?
ALmazing - 3/31/2014, 9:18 AM
A behind the scenes Lex Luthor that doesn't encounter Superman and its played by a dweeby looking dude... what a missed opportunity.

Reaction GIF: disappointed, sad, Batman
JoeMomma29 - 3/31/2014, 9:18 AM
I am not sold on Jesse playing Lex but I am not counting him out either. Again I am eager to see how he portrays Lex and how the whole movie shakes out. Like many other people I would not be shocked if his performance is beyond amazing.
MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 9:20 AM
I'm sure Eisenberg is like
Vegeta - 3/31/2014, 9:22 AM
Lex Luthor from the comics?

Hmm, what Luthor are you exactly referring too? Because there are plenty of different Luthor's in the comics.

I always scratch my head at that shit. It's like when people say they want Batman from the comics. It's like, what Batman is that then, because there are many different versions Batman in the comics.
Blanka1212 - 3/31/2014, 9:23 AM
Anne Hathaway brought nothing new or inspired to the Catwoman role.

Sorry to those who liked her in it, but it wasn't really all that great or meaty of a role, and she's not nearly sexy enough to pull off what Catwoman should be.
IM53 - 3/31/2014, 9:24 AM
LoL Shhhh Hathaway.
Spock0Clock - 3/31/2014, 9:24 AM
I was never against Hathaway, and I don't really remember people being all that negative about it, either. There are always some fan squabbling, but the Eisenberg casting has been much more contentious (only really rivaled by Affleck and Ledger).

My advice to Eisenberg would be: don't be yourself. Ledger knocked it out of the park because he pulled an amazing performance out of nowhere. It's still hard to watch TDK and see Ledger under the makeup and performance. You won't have the benefit of makeup, so your performance is key. Whatever you do, do not come across as a petulant spoiled brat. Those Luthor performances are always bad and you in particular look that part...

Honestly, I'd really like to see the screen test, because I can't imagine what DC is even going for with this Luthor if it isn't the "whaa whaa I don't like Stupidman" mixed with heavy doses of Zuckerberg.

Yeah, just.. drink. Do that. Do that for all your problems, and you'll just be fine and f*cking dandy.
cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:25 AM
Whatever, I'm probably the last person to be giving "advice" to anyone for anything.
cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:26 AM
How's life, 53? Good to see ya, man.
UltimateHunt - 3/31/2014, 9:27 AM
i though she was going to tell him to get out, ehh what she said was good and right.
mhmmm i wonder if nolan will give snyder advice(s)?
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 9:27 AM
RichardHedski - 3/31/2014, 9:31 AM
I hope Lex dresses up like Catwoman. It would be an amazing twist in MOS2 and the haters will go nuts like they already are.
cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:32 AM
Hahahahahaha. That's the secret of life.
typicalfanboy - 3/31/2014, 9:32 AM
Anne= hot girl. Fanboy reaction:now agree with anything she says.
thewonderer - 3/31/2014, 9:32 AM
Anne was the perfect Catwoman.

Her hip movements alone made her a fantastic Catwoman.
CherryBomb - 3/31/2014, 9:33 AM
Preach girl!
Fans don't realise that the Studios put a huge amount of time, effort and money into these projects and they are extremely careful when it comes to casting, they cast Jesse and Gal Gadot for a reason, we weren't in the audition room but something made those producers and the studio think "wow we need this person" over the many other actors and actresses who were dying for these roles

RonnyYagami - 3/31/2014, 9:33 AM
My God! she was the cat more lifeless woman who has seen the movie, so really like her as an actress, but I want is for her to stay away from the DC universe. Morena Baccarin would be perfect for the part of Catwoman.
MercwithMouth - 3/31/2014, 9:34 AM
Loved Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Made Pfieffer and Halle Berry look like two-bit trollops. She's gorgeous. Will never forget when she climbed on the BatPod...Dat ASS, Damn!

That, and she's an incredible actress. Don't believe me? Watch Love and Other Drugs.

I think Eisenberg will make a great Lex, just like Affleck will make a great Batman. It's Superman and WW that I'm worried about.
GiantNerd - 3/31/2014, 9:35 AM
[frick]ing Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. I'm still like wtf..
MercwithMouth - 3/31/2014, 9:36 AM
Also, her little monologue during the dancing scene with Bruce, was phenomenal. She brought a real gravitas to that scene, if not every scene that she was in.
Vegeta - 3/31/2014, 9:38 AM
Hathaway is a brilliant actress. She was amazing in Love and Other Drugs.
RichardHedski - 3/31/2014, 9:39 AM
I liked Anne in the Prince-Ass Diaries.
MOOlawale - 3/31/2014, 9:41 AM
Hey guys, i just had a thought on what WB should do with Man of steel 2. If they made Doomsday the villian and he kills Superman at the end, that could be a reason for the Justice League being created. Batman and co would feel like if a villain as strong as that ever returns, they can't stop him individually and would need to create a team. Also, Black Adam could then come in as well as they would see him as the new Superman. And of course in the Justice League movie, Black Adam turns bad, superman comes back and helps stop him and at the very end, they show Billy Batson becomning Shazam.
Enphlieuwince - 3/31/2014, 9:41 AM
That's some good advice, but, it should be a given. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would give a flying fu¢k about someone's opinion when it's based on nothing but speculation anyway.
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 9:43 AM
@MercwithMouth haha take out Halle! She doesn't belong in that category. ;) I do have 2 ask though what's got u worried bout Supes/Cavill? If anything my only worries lie with WW.Cavill owns it as Supes imo.
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 9:44 AM
Does any1 know how many films Cavill is signed on 4??
DrDoom - 3/31/2014, 9:45 AM
I don't give a [frick] what she says, even if imo her casting worked out.

Eisenberg as Luthor is a [frick]ing terrible choice, and studios making shitty casting choices all the goddamn time.

[frick]ing Eisenberg and his Social Network pal Garfield are two of the biggest wastes of breath as actors I've ever seen. Both talentless, overrated hacks who should be stuffed in boxes and shipped to the [frick]ing moon for their piece of shit acting.
