Joe Quesada Talks BIG HERO 6; Will We See More Disney/Marvel Animated Movies?

Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada reveals the story behind how Big Hero 6 become Marvel and Disney's first big screen animated movie together and seemingly hints at this being just one of many ideas they have for similar collaborations in future...

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Joe Quesada has shed some light on how exactly Big Hero 6 became the first animated movie to hit the big screen from Marvel and Disney. However, what's most interesting about the comments below is the fact that these weren't the only characters that director Don Hall approached the studio with; if Big Hero 6 is a success, it seems likely that there's definitely more to follow. "The idea actually came from Don Hall, the director, who is a huge Marvel fan and obviously a big nerd if he remembers Big Hero 6. Don came to us with suggestions for maybe six of our lesser known properties, and we started working with him on some ideas for how these could be approached as Disney animated movies. Don took three of those possibilities to John Lasseter, and John really gravitated to the story that we spitballed on "Big Hero 6." That's how it came to be, and it's been really fun."

Even a lot of hardcore fans may run into trouble trying to remember the Big Hero 6 characters, but as for what makes them the right choice for the first Marvel/Disney animated feature, Quesada is clearly confident in it being something special. "Well, I think the x-factor was that when we started reimagining Big Hero 6 with Don and his crew, there was a story there of two brothers. I think it was a boy and his robot kind of thing that makes it very Disney in the traditional sense. But the beauty of this is that Don is a real Marvel fan, and he's embraced the visual history of Marvel. I think we've gone and lectured to the animators over there about what Marvel is and how we look at visual dynamics in our comics -- everything from Jack Kirby to John Romita Sr. to John Romita Jr. So there's a lot of Marvel influence in this, which is really cool. It's going to be an amazing blend of what Disney does in animation and what Marvel does in the action adventure genre." Are you guys looking forward to the movie?

I'll check out anything from Marvel, or DC to be honest.

I think that animated feature films would be a great way to do a lot of characters that don't fit in as well with the MCU movies

There was a miniseries that Marvel put out called Sunfire And Big Hero 6,which also featured Red Ronin-originally created to fight Godzilla when Marvel published the Big G's book...

@Nomis, but that's kinda the whole point. They wanted less recognizable characters. Characters who probably hadn't even been in animation or made any appearances outside of the comics. Characters who may be completely unfamiliar to the audience.

I'd be interested in knowing the other properties that were suggested.

They should probably publish a TPB so we can become familiar with the characters. I can't find this anywhere online.

I think I'll go get me those comics now, just to see what that's all about.

Bring it!!

Can't wait to watch this, and I hope they make Gogo Tomago as sexy as she was in the comic.

Never heard of them, so I won't be going in with expectations of the characters. So that could be a good thing. And much like someone else said above, I will pretty much give anything Marvel or DC put out a shot

Big Hero 6 is a team of Japanese superheroes. Pretty much the only time I saw them was... I think during Spider Island. They helped out during some big catastrophe.

Hmmm could be interesting, but Joe Quesada's involvement is not a good thing, considering that he's the main reason that Spider-Man is in such a mess. Reading OMD still makes me angry.

Big Hero 6 was nothing to write home about, but its second outing, which they seem to be taking inspiration from character-wise, has the bones of something that could translate well into an animated film, so I'm excited to see how this goes.

If it succeeds, expect a Power Pack movie :P
