EDITORIAL/FAN CAST: How Marvel Should Reintroduce BLADE Into Its Cinematic Universe

EDITORIAL/FAN CAST: How Marvel Should Reintroduce BLADE Into Its Cinematic Universe

Although the movies weren't made by Marvel Studios, Blade was technically the first successful Marvel character to get his own movie franchise. It would make sense for them to revisit the "day walker" in Phase 3 or 4. Read on for my thoughts.

How Marvel should reintroduce Blade into its Cinematic Universe

1. Cast Mahershala Ali

He is not exactly a household name, but he showed some legitimate acting chops in both House of Cards (particularly in Season 2) and in the Movie “Predators” as the Sierre Leone Death Squad Soldier. Although Wesley Snipes portrayal as Blade probably cannot be topped (After the success of the movie, Marvel changed the character within the comics to be more like Snipes’s portrayal in the 616 universe and especially in the Ultimate Universe), but his combination of a superhero’s build (he’s 6’2” and pretty built) and onscreen presence (although his time in “Predators” was short, his character’s imposing presence amongst other killers was definitely felt) should produce a quality anti-hero or dark protagonist. Also, the quiet/understated confidence, intelligence, sense of realness and passion he brings to the role, as Remy Danton in “House of Cards” would bode well to a somewhat isolated character like Blade. It also might help to differentiate this Blade from Snipes' by changing the look (maybe lost the trench coat). Throw in a few one-liners the way Snipes did and I think you’d have a successful Blade.

2. Make Draconis the first Antagonist.

Although Deacon Frost and Dracula are Blade’s main enemies, I think a Deacon Frost centered movie would be too similar to the first Blade movie and I think Dracula should be saved as a villain. Most Blade movies feature him slicing through hundreds of vampires, so it would be cool to see him fight a vampire that is immensely powerful (even more so than Blade) by feeding on other vampires, and whose sole mission is to kill Blade. All of Snipes movies center on Blade being the hunter so it might be refreshing to see him as the hunted. I would love to see James Purefoy (Joe Carroll in “The Following”) portray this role.

3. Make Blade about 100 years old.

In both Marvel comics and most vampire lore, vampires become more powerful as they age. Blade often appears to be at least 10 times more powerful than the average vampire even though technically he isn’t any stronger than them. He’s just immune to silver, garlic, sunlight and holy water. This would make it clear as to why Blade is so deadly and would further explain why Blade runs through 99% of vampires and is so skilled in martial arts and with various weapons. Also, since vampires don’t age, Ali could still fit the cast. It also makes sense to amp up Blade’s power levels somewhat to make him more comparable to Marvel’s other cinematic characters.

4. Make the sequel a Blade and Werewolf by Night team up against Dracula.

In the comics, Dracula has defeated the whole X-Men team and has been a nemesis to powerful beings like Apocalypse. It would make sense for Blade to need major help to defeat him. I think this team up movie could be the precursor to a Midnight Sons movie.

5. Make a Midnight Sons Movie

It seems pretty clear that Marvel really wants to make a Dr. Strange movie in Phase 3, so it would make sense to incorporate the Midnight Sons. This could allow Dr. Strange to be the star of his own team and it would also allow Marvel to make darker-toned movies, which they probably wouldn’t want to do with their Avengers characters. They might want to add other characters (not Morbius though because he probably belongs to Sony/Spiderman) to make a more complete team, but I think the two most important characters would be Dr. Strange due to his popularity and impending movie and Blade because he’s already produced a successful franchise. If Dormamu isn’t used in a Dr. Strange film, I think he could be a good villain. I also think they could use the Switchblade storyline and have a possessed Blade be the villain.

6. Make a Midnight Sons and Avengers Team up

This probably wouldn’t happen, but it would be pretty cool to see a movie where the two teams had to fight Loki and Mephisto or something along those lines

I just cannot see anyone else but Wesley Snipes as Blade. Marvel should have made some of the Netflix shows based on Blade, Ghosts Rider, and Punisher instead of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones.
Klone - 2/26/2014, 11:58 AM
Wesley Snipes may of been difficult and he may have attempted to kill his director at one point, but he was brilliant as Blade. I think he kept in character to the point where someone had some sad news of a family member dying that he grimaced or something when they tried to hug him. I'm not sure if that's 100% but something along those lines.
Kurne - 2/26/2014, 12:32 PM
Vampires in the MCU would be scary as [frick], but I don't know how they could co-exist with the main heroes (and S.H.I.E.L.D. I guess).
kong - 2/26/2014, 12:42 PM
Blade would fit better in the Netflix shows and he should be played by Michael Jai White.
LMB10 - 2/26/2014, 12:45 PM
Daredevil and Punisher should get their own shows... And I don't doubt that they will, eventually.
DylansMyDog - 2/26/2014, 12:59 PM
I wish Marvel would explore some of their horror characters. They don't need big budgets and if you release them in Jan/Feb when there is little competition that'd make plenty of money.

Oh and Midnight Sons would be amazing
Interestein - 2/26/2014, 1:05 PM
I feel like he'll be referenced in the Netflix shows (Iron Fist?).
GizmoEl - 2/26/2014, 1:21 PM
He should definitely be in the Marvel Knights Netflix series
HulkOnion - 2/26/2014, 1:25 PM
wesley must stay
DrunkenNukem - 2/26/2014, 1:25 PM
Remy from House of cards as Blade??? no...sorry..

Dont reintroduce Blade if you are going to make it with puns, lame jokes and no blood
DrunkenNukem - 2/26/2014, 1:26 PM
Blade 1..one of the best cbm ever...
jbomb - 2/26/2014, 1:33 PM
The only person who can replace wesley snipes in my mind is michael jai white
ICStoopedPeople - 2/26/2014, 1:34 PM
Blade 1 is so overlooked when people declare "one of the best CBM's ever." That [frick]ing movie was amazeballs.
GliderMan - 2/26/2014, 1:35 PM
And then maybe, after all said movies are released one year after each other, the MCU and DCCU could collide!
novaprime - 2/26/2014, 1:39 PM
This would be cool but i wouldnt want to see Marvels dark part of this universe! Having anything to do with the avengers Blade should be Rated R!!
Midnight sons can be great
tacobender - 2/26/2014, 1:41 PM
I like the casting choice, though, he'd probably be better as Black Panther. The Midnight Sons idea is great! But instead of separate movies/shows you can have the sequel to Dr Stange be "Dr. Strange and the Midnight Sons" and kill two birds with one stone by bringing in Ghost Rider and Blade. Maybe even have Moon Knight round out the team.
novaprime - 2/26/2014, 1:43 PM
Blade, G-Rider, Hannibal King, Moonknight, can be a good enough team for a midnight sons movie ot even an appearence on the Darkside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Blade will make an awsome trilogy along with a Ghost Rider reboot
StSharp - 2/26/2014, 1:46 PM

Why any fan anything becomes main news is beyond me. Keep youtr fan casts to yourself, they will ALWAYS be WRONG!

And they are never good, inspired casting! Always the same actors or absolutely atrocious choices!

These fan casts and editorials should be banned from the front page, always.
EdgyOutsider - 2/26/2014, 1:49 PM
Blade reboot set in the MCU? Sure. I'd also be up for Blade on Netflix? Midnight Sons movie? Hell no. Ghost Rider on Netflix (in response to other comments) is not a good idea, Ghost Rider requires a cinematic budget to look proper not to mention too interesting to not be a movie.
Inhuman - 2/26/2014, 1:53 PM
I respectfully disagree with this article. First of all the supernatural/undead element of Marvel is going to be the toughest to put on screen out of all the different elements Marvel offers. Marvel prides itself on making the movies scientific based, to create a world that could possibly exist in the real world. The undead throws that concept out of the window because of how unrealistic it is. I really have no clue how you take vampires, werewolves, undead, zombies, what have you, and throw it into the MCU all of a sudden. But if Marvel can somehow figure out a way to do it, the best way to do it would be thru Netflix. Marvel's Netflix Phase 1 is Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders. If there is gonna be a Phase 2 Netflix, this is where you introduce the supernatural side of Marvel because Marvel can go darker with these properties. If I was in charge of this, I would make Blade, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Werewolf By Night, then Midnight Sons as your Phase 2 Netflix shows

Netflix Phase 1 - Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Defenders

Netflix Phase 2 - Blade, Ghost Rider, Werewolf By Night, Moon Knight, Midnight Sons

Netflix Phase 3 - Punisher, Spider-Woman, The Runaways, Taskmaster, Thunderbolts

I can't blame Snipes for being prick to Goyer! Everything Goyer wrote and directed after Blade 2 was graded from questionable to piece of shit. Also, Blade 1 and 2 were Great because of directors that changed some of Goyers ideas and add some of their own to it.
I saw Blu-ray of Blade 3 where Goyer attacks Del Toro and Norrington for changing his scripts while he made Blade 3. In his place everyone would shut up.

If Snipes kicked his ass maybe he would get some better writing and directing skills.
revjordan - 2/26/2014, 1:57 PM
If they bring Blade into the MCU, He'll be introduced in a Halloween episode of Agents of SHIELD.
ForMeToPoopOn - 2/26/2014, 1:58 PM
What do you mean "dark protagonist"?

Dedpool - 2/26/2014, 1:59 PM
Love everything but the casting. Michael Jai White for Blade!!!!
AbedIsBatman - 2/26/2014, 2:34 PM
boboMELOSHE - 2/26/2014, 2:39 PM
I can totally see Mahershala Ali playing Luke Cage, just get him a little beefier and he would be perfect. I do like the idea of Draconis as the antagonist of the first film, makes it clear that this Blade is different from the others.

On thing I think you should have added was how to add blade in the MCU as it is. You offered great ideas for a Blade franchise but didn't offer any thoughts on how he could fit into the current universe. Personally, once Strange gets a film Blade will fit right in alongside him. Though I think Both Strange and Blade should be left for a phase after Thanos.
Swiftsword777 - 2/26/2014, 2:42 PM
I was pumped and happy someone was shedding some light on my man blade until i saw your choice of the actor u would like 2 see in the role..How about Noooooooooo!
thatiscrazy - 2/26/2014, 2:53 PM
who ever plays blade has to OWN the screen. Snipes will be hard to top.
thatiscrazy - 2/26/2014, 2:55 PM
also, if they were gonna make him old, they should just cast Snipes again.
Tajin88 - 2/26/2014, 2:56 PM
Blade with Wesley Snipes is the best marvel movie ever! I wouldn't mind Mahershala Ali, but would love to see snipes one last time, so he could end his story the way he wanted and not what that bitch goyer tried to do: Making a Blade movie with blade in the background...[frick] Goyer!
MrCamw1 - 2/26/2014, 3:03 PM
Blade 1 was good. Blade 2 was great. I say if they ever do another Blade movie, get Guillermo del Toro to do it.
BlkThunderGod - 2/26/2014, 3:09 PM
I can't see anyone else playing blade but Wesley snipes. Although I'm open to other actors. I don't think micheal jai white would make a good blade. Get Wesley back with nick fury on a 2 hour AOS.
Samssun - 2/26/2014, 3:50 PM
Is it me or were those some pretty good ideas? ...kinda impressed
TheRealRemyLebeau - 2/26/2014, 3:55 PM
Any body is replaceable for any comicbook role but blade 1&2 are classics and I would love to see his return. Supernatural world can easily fit into the mcu. AOS had a heaven and hell episode already depicting another world that is between our reality.
VIRILEMAN - 2/26/2014, 4:44 PM
Totally agree on all accounts. Great write up! They need to do some films that follow the comic. They could use "Dead Again" and "Sins of the Father" for inspiration.
Blastaar - 2/26/2014, 5:07 PM
I love Blade but by all accounts, he should not have been able to defeat Dracula. If they would have turned Blade into the Legendary "Blood God" as prophesied, then THAT would have been the ideal way to go in order to defeat Dracula. Dracula vs The Blood God. That would have been epic, but then they'd have to find a way to turn Blade back normal. Blade as the Blood God defeats Dracula and almost kills him but Dracula works out a truce where Nightstalkers work with Dracula to bring Blade back to normal. Otherwise Blade as the Blood God would be the Armageddon for all humans AND all vampires alike.

Bringing Blade to Netflix makes then most sense, then I'd love to see other Midnight Sons characters and other horror characters come to life on Netflix where they CAN actually get a lot grittier and darker. Marvel has regained the rights to Blade, GhostRider, Daredevil, and Punisher, these are all characters that fit PERFECTLY for Netflix, they should all be taken advantage of. Seeing Punisher show up on Daredevil will be awesome.
Blastaar - 2/26/2014, 5:13 PM
If Kevin Spacey is fine with being on Netflix, then i'm sure Wesley Snipes who's been out of work due to incarceration, shouldnt have a problem. Marvel Studios needs to not hold that against Snipes, just like they didnt hold Robert Downey Jr's drug abuse past against him and actually hired him anyway. Marvel, just hire Snipes back as Blade but get new actors for Punisher and GhostRider.
Destined - 2/26/2014, 5:15 PM
Mahershala Ali will also be playing Boggs, a military personnel, in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 1&2.
GuardianDevil - 2/26/2014, 5:19 PM
I love the previous Blade trilogy and would not mind seeing a reboot but IMO they should hold off and focus on their other, better characters like Daredevil for instance...
MightyZeus - 2/26/2014, 5:24 PM
I'm sorry but i dont like it. I'd really love a Blade film to be set with in the MCU but you dont want to over saturate the character and the film with too many references to the MCU. Blade 1 & 2 are awesome cbms.
