As expected, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is indeed at the #1 spot for a third straight week, and it has in fact performed so well that the Marvel Studios sequel is just days away from crossing $600 million worldwide! Hit the jump for details on this weekend at the box office.

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

So, with a current worldwide total of around $586 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now closing in on Iron Man 2's $623 million and Thor: The Dark World's $644 million to become the third highest grossing Marvel Studios movie behind only Iron Man 3 and The Avengers. Can it do it? We'll have to wait and see, but with numbers like these from this weekend, it certainly seems likely! Also, as confident as Warner Bros. are in Batman Vs. Superman, this has got to giving them second thoughts about facing off against Captain America 3 in 2016. What do you guys think?

Lets see;

- Avengers; Age Of Ultron should easily pass its previous movie and given it features the return of Iron Man after the block buster Iron Man 3, can easily see it making around $1.5bn+
- If Captain America; The Winter Soldier makes anywhere past $700m then expect Captain America 3 to make $1bn+
- Thor; The Dark World made $644m so when Thor 3 rolls around we should see a box office of $800m minimum

Look forward to see Marvel take the highest grossing film franchise of all time spot by the time we see Ant-Man in July 2015.

typicalfanboy - 4/20/2014, 8:40 AM
not really surprising. what competition does it have? transcendence bombed big time. nothing else comes close to entertaining. i liked tws. it was fun. batman vs superman is going to be a titanic like event. it's going to be huge. man of steel was the highest grossing superman movie of all time, not add batman and wonder woman. how big is that going to get?

Again, never losing sight of the window of poor competition. Marvel has done this several times in the past, never more so than this time.
Marvel is so good at dodging comp that I'm sure they will move out of may 2016.

Good for them either way.

I'm a huge DC fan and Superman is my favorite superhero. That being said...Captain America: The Winter Soldier is my favorite comicbook movie! As a matter of fact, it's my favorite movie! This movie was amazing and I still intend to watch it one or two more times before it leaves theatres!
Pheezmatic - 4/20/2014, 8:50 AM
@MrBJ That sounds about right to my mullet smothered ears...

Kyos - 4/20/2014, 8:50 AM
Nice! :D I might actually go watch it a third time during the next week with some friends who haven't seen it yet. That would make it one of my "most often watched in the cinema" movies. Not sure I will though.

"Will it out gross the crap that is Man of Steel?"

Easily... If it remains top of the box office it could stay in cinema's longer. Either way it has about 2-3 weeks remaining minimum.
BruceLeroy - 4/20/2014, 8:52 AM
A film putting up these kinda numbers in April isn't ordinary. Weak competition or not, it's an impressive feat period.
ATrueHero1987 - 4/20/2014, 8:53 AM
LOL @Supercat!!

This is Marvel right now: "I'm the baker, I bake the bread. The barber, I cut ya head"!

"- Thor; The Dark World made $644m so when Thor 3 rolls around we should see a box office of $800m minimum"

Not so fast :)...I would be elated if it reached that, but the Thor solo franchise has been met with only a lukewarm reception in the United States, and that will always hold it back from reaching the upper tiers.

Thor has a European-ish aura that doesn't catch on well with the US audience.

Unless these guys really knock it out the park with Thor 3, I forsee the same big opening weekend followed by big drop offs. Around the same 200-ish total in the US.

Overseas, where Thor does most of its business will see the growth. In order to do 800M, it will need close to or over 600M overseas. Possible...but...I think it falls short of that. I'm thinking 220 domestic, 520 overseas, 740M worldwide.

I don't see the mediocre US performance changing, barring a true 150 minute epic.
ChrispyG - 4/20/2014, 8:53 AM
It would be crazy if it could hold it for 4 weekends straight.

Also worth noting, in North America, it has essentially made in 3 weekends what Thor: The Dark World made in it's entire run. Opened bigger and holding better.
IminentEminence - 4/20/2014, 8:54 AM
