BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA Set For #1 This Weekend; Will Pass $200 Million By Sunday

As we told you last night, Wally Pfister's Transcendence has been yet another Johnny Depp led flop in North America and now looks set to finish at a lowly fourth place. However, Captain America: The Winter Soldier however will likely take #1 and will soon pass $200 million domestically!

Easter weekend at the North American box office looks set to be very good to Marvel as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is widely believed to be the favourite to take the #1 spot yet again. Last weekend, analysts predicted that Rio 2 would triumph and pretty much no one thought the Marvel Studios sequel could win against the very decent looking Transcendence after three weeks of release! Well, with the Wally Pfister movie panned by critics and a lowly C+ CinemaScore from viewers, that will now take fourth place behind Heaven is for Real. It seems as if that movie will earn as little as $13 million for the weekend after debuting yesterday with a measly $4.8 million. It was Captain America: The Winter Soldier which took #1 on Friday with $9.7 million, and it should easily beat Rio 2's projected weekend haul of $23 million with $25 million. The Marvel Studios movie will also pass the $200 million mark domestically by Sunday afternoon. As we told you a few days ago, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 started off its international run (no further updates on that as of yet) strongly, but it should be interesting to see whether that movie has the same sort of positive word of mouth to hold off competition from Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past when it does eventually open in North America. What do you guys think?

Good for Cap.

MrSotoMan - 4/19/2014, 9:53 AM
You know what Transcendence reminds me of?

Hollow Man. Hollow Man was about a man who broke through scientific research to create something that could change humanity forever, he ends up using it for the sake of science and goes completely berserk over the complications that ensue.

Transcendence, isn't the same but they do have some similarities as both act as thrillers towards a really good concept and take place in the modern day.

BTW, I really did like Hollow Man. Very underrated.
ALegendaryPanda - 4/19/2014, 9:53 AM
DAAAAAAAAYUM!! Cap is killing it!
Brainiac13 - 4/19/2014, 9:54 AM

Omarvls - 4/19/2014, 10:02 AM
It is looking more and more like a 700 Million Dollar BLOCKBUSTER for the
Best CBM of All Time

Hail Winter Soldier
ezio619 - 4/19/2014, 10:03 AM

RamonSuarez - 4/19/2014, 10:04 AM
Can't wait until it eclipses 640 mil so the wannabe experts here can try to double talk their way out of their low estimates.
Gmoney84 - 4/19/2014, 10:04 AM
Used however twice in the tag at the top. Might want to correct.
MexicanSuperman - 4/19/2014, 10:05 AM
Maybe this movie will bust a dark knight and make a billion dollars.

Omarvls - 4/19/2014, 10:06 AM
And like someone asked me
How can you say the Winter Soldier is the Best CBM of All Time when TDK made 1 Billion compare to TWS making about 700 Million

Well Iron Man 3 Made 1.2 Billion while MOS made 660 Million and I still think MOS was a better film
RamonSuarez - 4/19/2014, 10:06 AM
Who was the genius who told me that this film would make 500 million tops?
DoubleD - 4/19/2014, 10:06 AM
They haven't updated the oversea number yet. China still shows 80 million. Once they update foreign numbers this movie is already at 600 million for this week and by next Monday 700 million
JoJo1982 - 4/19/2014, 10:06 AM
Also if happens this will be the only movie in the MCU other than Avengers, to be the number 1 movie 3 weeks in a row
charlie2094 - 4/19/2014, 10:06 AM
Going to be very close between Cap 2, Thor 2 and Iron Man 2 once it's finished. Should all three fall in the $600-$700 range. Think Cap will maybe come out on top, going to be close, not quite as strong at the foreign as Thor

That's extremely optimistic, only got like one more market to open in, many of which TASM2 has already opened in
Destined - 4/19/2014, 10:07 AM
Yasss Captain my Captain! Owning in these streets! Taking my lil brother today to see it his first time my fifth, ow!
JoJo1982 - 4/19/2014, 10:07 AM

Don't forget it's opening in Japan this weekend too
DoubleD - 4/19/2014, 10:07 AM
TDK 1 billion, Avengers 1.5 billion
Brainiac13 - 4/19/2014, 10:07 AM
I've just started reading Brubaker's run on Cap......really good stories. Cap isn't one of my favorites but warming to character now.

ezio619 - 4/19/2014, 10:08 AM
i now wonder how Guardians is gonna do,its got competition in TMNT and THE EXPENDABLES 3
DaVinci31 - 4/19/2014, 10:08 AM
It's brilliant really when you realize that the spring/early-summer is actually the perfect time for a blockbuster because of the lack of competition at the theaters.
Amazing512 - 4/19/2014, 10:08 AM
Yes! Bring it home for a third weekend, Cap!
Brainiac13 - 4/19/2014, 10:08 AM

Amazing512 - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM
This just makes me want to see it for a third time.
Omarvls - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM

MOS was in theaters for 15 weeks Domestically while Thor DW was in theaters for 11 weeks domestically

This is TWS ONLY 3RD week in theaters domestically so I say Marvel let it run through the summer to see if it get reach between 700-800 Million
SuperCat - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM
You can't stop Cap!!!!!
RamonSuarez - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM
Movie is proof that WOM is more important than opening date or hype.

Some blockbuster films open in Summer with great hype and fade after big openings.

Others have smaller openings but real staying power.
DoubleD - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM
Cap is already at 600 billion but oversea numbers haven't updated yet.

Cap is at 700 million plus movie already we just have to go through the motions now
maninfinesuit - 4/19/2014, 10:10 AM
[frick] yeah, Cap. Going to see it again with Spidey in thirteen days. Hail Hydra.

Now, who's hungry.

McNyagano - 4/19/2014, 10:11 AM
LOL at the people who said this wouldn't pass 500 mil xD
Klone - 4/19/2014, 10:11 AM

That's a bad Brainiac! Bad! You're an AI! Threaten to probe him with probey stuff!
DoubleD - 4/19/2014, 10:12 AM
Brainiac13 ,,, THANK YOU ! Still waiting for a new Hulk movie.

HULK IS NUMBER 1 in my book ever since I was a kid
JoJo1982 - 4/19/2014, 10:12 AM

Yeah I'm worried about GotG

In the a slow month of August, it has to worry about

Expendables 3
James Brown Biopic
Sin City 2
SuperCat - 4/19/2014, 10:12 AM
Klone - 4/19/2014, 10:13 AM
Um... people who said it will pass 500 million aren't exactly some insane halfwits to be laughed at. It's a reasonable prediction for a summer film that is the sequel to a 300 million film with the word "AMERICA" in the title.
