CAPTAIN AMERICA EXCLUSIVE: Director Joe Johnston Offers Commentary on EW Photos — And, Yes, there WILL Be Nazis

Last week Entertainment Weekly's name burned through the Internet with its exclusive imagery from Captain America. This week, CBM's SciFi Media Zone exclusively presents director Joe Johnston's comments on those images.

Interview with Joe Johnston conducted by and copyright Edward Gross

To other websites and blogs: if you are planning on covering this article, please only take a couple of excerpts and link back to this page for the rest. Thanks!

JOE JOHNSTON: This is a frame grab from the rebirth scene, a moment after Steve steps out of the rebirth pod. He's a little dazed by the transformation process and a bit wobbly on his feet, but looking for all the world like a super-hero. Chris worked out for days for the shot of the pod opening and revealing his new self, and the iron pumping really paid off.

JOE JOHNSTON: This shot shows the rebirth pod with Steve inside. Erskine is about to begin the procedure.

JOE JOHNSTON: Red Skull about to evaporate a trio of Nazis who have come to confiscate his technology to serve the Reich. Hugo Weaving was really the only choice for Red Skull. Hugo is a chameleon as an actor. He's played so many incredibly versatile roles, from the LORD OF THE RINGS films, MATRIX, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT. He's never failed to create a multi-layered and complex character. In my own experience with him on THE WOLFMAN, he took a part that was much less significant and inspired us to develop the character into a pivotal role. I wanted Hugo to play Red Skull to SEE what he would bring to the character. He's one of those actors you don't want to look away from."

JOE JOHNSTON: A gang of Hydra bikers intent on chasing down Steve on his custom Stark-modified Harley Davidson.

JOE JOHNSTON: Hayley Atwell and Chris Evans are seen in uniform in Allied Headquarters, a fantastic multi-room set constructed at Longcross Studios, an ex-tank factory outside of London.

JOE JOHNSTON: The submarine was built by Paul Corbould's team of special effects technicians. It can actually dive and resurface, travels at 12 knots, has a watertight compartment for the actor, Richard Armitage, who plays a very convincingly evil spy, Heinz Kruger.

JOE JOHNSTON: The last picture is a shot of Chris, returning from Steve Roger's first mission, when we goes AWOL to rescue his pal, Bucky Barnes.

OMG!!!! Amazing! Great Find! :D
mikebunt - 11/10/2010, 3:33 AM
I was worried there might not be Nazis in the movie, but sounds like there is!
RexDartEskimoSpy - 11/10/2010, 3:36 AM
I've never been so relieved to see the word Nazis.
DCMarvelFreshman - 11/10/2010, 3:41 AM
Awesome Exclusive ED. This Answers so many things!

Red Skull takes on Nazis! Steve Rogers' first mission is to rescue Bucky!
MichaelEsquire - 11/10/2010, 3:41 AM
Making a guess here on certain plot points explained.

1. HYDRA, lead by Red Skull, breaks away from the Nazi party when Skull's ambition becomes greater than Hitler's for world domination and they become the bigger threat that the US forces secretly concentrate on.

2. After Rodgers realizes he's only being used as a motivational figure and not utilizing his newfound abilities to help serve his country, he decides to take on his own private mission when Bucky is kidnapped by HYDRA.

3. After Rodgers is seen as a hero for rescuing Bucky by himself using his new abilities, they hook him up with Howard Stark to custom fit him with new gear and a modified motorcycle. He then gets briefed along with Bucky to take on whatever HYDRA's plot is.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot - 11/10/2010, 4:19 AM
Fantastic find! And... NAZIS! So glad that this interview cleared up, once and for all, that there are Nazis in CA.

Needs more Bucky now!
tazmaniak - 11/10/2010, 4:38 AM
So will Bucky be "Bucky".Will he wear his uniform?
jimoakley666 - 11/10/2010, 4:49 AM
I will admit, Hugo Weaving stole every scene he was in in The Wolfman. That scene in the pub where he asks for a pint is pure hilarious class.

And he was a much better, more faithful Frederick Abberline than Johnny Depp.
JoshWilding - 11/10/2010, 4:51 AM
ED, we can always rely on you to provide us with these fantastic and unique exclusives - for that I thank you! :) Especially as this article confirms the presence of Nazis, gives us our first hint at what we'll see Bucky do and confirms my suspicions that that pod is what Steve becomes Captain America in...a little different from the comics but I like it.
duncboy - 11/10/2010, 4:57 AM
I love how he says Chris Evans worked out for "days" for the first shot of him coming out of the Rebirth Chamber. I've played sports and been active for the majority of my life, and let me tell you that it takes more than a few DAYS to get in the kind of shape Evans was in.
Minato - 11/10/2010, 5:03 AM
Finally some Hitler/Nazi hints. I hate them bastards and really wanna see Steve hit one in the face. Marvel has yet do dissapoint me with their studio movies.
Paulley - 11/10/2010, 5:15 AM

marvel72 - 11/10/2010, 5:18 AM

FrankGarret - 11/10/2010, 5:50 AM
I'm quite chuffed. I still want to see Cap fighting some mainstream Nazis, though.

I think Red Skull is going to be a loyal Nazi at first, then loose belief in Hitler's leadership in the last months of the war as German troops bging to surrender, so he goes rogue and issues his own orders to Hydra troops, who promptly begin to mount successful counter-attacks that threaten to turn the tide of the war.
FrankGarret - 11/10/2010, 5:54 AM
Hey, whatabout the one with cap walking toward a group of soldiers (a Brit paratrooper among them) with the shield on his back?

Is it possibly spoilery? Maybe those are the Howling Commandos?
redsoxdude - 11/10/2010, 6:07 AM
I always make sure i click on your articles Ed. Always great stuff.
Great commentary from Joe. I am really looking forward to this movie.

TheDukeofMadmen - 11/10/2010, 6:09 AM
This will be the only time that I ever utter this phrase in my life.....Yaaaa nazi's.
parascythe - 11/10/2010, 6:11 AM
if you guys happen to notice in the last seems like buck was at his (Evan) back..and there seems a red and blue color at the bottom left of that same picture..
level1paladin - 11/10/2010, 6:12 AM
Good stuff. Glad to hear bout the Nazi stuff, you people were starting to make me doubt my own awesome instincts. Let's hope we do see some of these bastards punched by Cap's fist.
skidz - 11/10/2010, 6:38 AM
I have to say I wasn't worried about the Nazi's being in the story (and I'm being honest, not just on a bandwagon). Looks like they're staying very true to the traditional origin story. I think the last show might be after a USO stage show. His shoulders have a fairly bright shade of blue underneath that jacket.
SuperSomething616 - 11/10/2010, 7:02 AM
MrMadrox - 11/10/2010, 7:04 AM
As far as the MCU, this is the movie I was most worried about being really bad, but it just keeps looking better and better. Awesome find.
jjmeylar - 11/10/2010, 7:08 AM
He kills Nazis?! EPIC!!!!!!!

@Wesley: I'm with you man. Maybe they'll have a dialogue between Red Skull and Hitler. I heard one online but I'm almost sure it was a fake.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/10/2010, 7:12 AM
Its not really surprise that the nazis are there. I mean its world war II and Captain America movie. Why wouldnt there be nazis?:)

Really excided about Dark Shadows!:P... I hope Depp makes spooky performance as Collins. Rick Baker should be the make-up artist in this movie! He makes the best Werewolves. An American Werewolf in London and The Wolfman proofs it.
Zombie137 - 11/10/2010, 7:17 AM
capcyclopsftw - 11/10/2010, 7:37 AM
What are you guys going to bitch about now?
rodsvilaca - 11/10/2010, 7:37 AM
"The submarine was built by Paul Corbould's team of special effects technicians. It can actually dive and resurface, travels at 12 knots, has a watertight compartment for the actor"

Paul Corbould's brother, named Chris Corbould, is the mand works with designer Nathan Crowley to bould The Tumbler and the Batpod in Chris Nolan's Batman movie franchise.
FrankGarret - 11/10/2010, 7:50 AM

I believe the red and blue are the edge of his shield strapped to his back.
jazzman - 11/10/2010, 7:51 AM

well thats not surprising since they doing most of these films in the UK. also his brothers have been involved in other comic book movies and franchise that are filming in the UK right now.

Paul Corbould - Captain America
Chris Corbould - X-Men: First Class
Neil Corbould - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

selinakyle - 11/10/2010, 7:57 AM
Congrats Ed. Nice Stuff!
ThaMessenger07 - 11/10/2010, 8:04 AM
That's the classic shield on his back in that pic! Awesome!

rockstar728 - 11/10/2010, 8:14 AM
"Chris worked out for days for the shot of the pod opening and revealing his new self, and the iron pumping really paid off."

Wow - poor Chris Evans! He actually had to work out for days??? :P
