CAPTAIN AMERICA THE WINTER SOLDIER Directors Talk 'Captain Rogers' Costume

The directors of the upcoming chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe speak on the decision to feature one of the more recent iterations of Captain Americas iconic costume

“It was about a real world grounding approach to the character, in the spirit of Ed Brubaker’s book, which is postmodern and deconstructionist and a grounded thriller,” Joe Russo tells SFX. “We wanted to put Cap in a space where he’s a special forces operative for SHIELD who goes on missions around the world that are clandestine and sometimes require a certain level of anonymity or stealth."

Many a comic fan became concerned that there was a possibility that Marvel was attempting to "take the america" out of Captain America when the first images surfaced of a costume that prominently featured only one of the three colors that are the signature of the United States. Joe Russo explains exactly what went into picking this specific costume for the film. "We wanted to use his Super Soldier outfit from the comic books as a way to represent, thematically, his place in the world of SHIELD and the difference between working for SHIELD and being Captain America. That’s something that gets explored on a very concrete level in terms of what outfits are used in the film. We didn’t feel like we were messing with the icon. People can say that they’re fans of the books if they’re only loyal to the ‘60s and ‘70s version of the character – well, then you’re a fan of that version of the character, but if you’ve been reading the books till the current runs then this is a journey that the character goes on and it’s a pretty explicit journey. We just felt like we were being faithful to the more recent issues of the books. The movie has a very thematic component in terms of the use of costumes. When you come to see the film I think you’ll understand why we made the choice we made…”

McNyagano - 2/11/2014, 1:41 PM
Nice find Omega :')
Enphlieuwince - 2/11/2014, 1:41 PM
The costume looks good. It's my favorite so far. I'm still hoping they tackle the classic look at least once more because all 3 versions have been lacking IMO.
TheGambitFreak - 2/11/2014, 1:42 PM
I don't mind it. It makes sense. Movie is gonna be awesome. Just please got back to the Red, White n' Blue for A2.

Good work, 0mega.

I really like the idea behind the costume choice.
Enphlieuwince - 2/11/2014, 1:43 PM
Good deal, @0DG.
TelaVizion - 2/11/2014, 1:48 PM
I wish he would keep the Captain Rogers suit for the rest of his time in the movie world. I don't think they'll ever come up with a better suit in the comics. That was always the best.

ProfessorX - 2/11/2014, 1:53 PM
I really liked his Avengers costume, sans the helmet.
WorstUserNameEver - 2/11/2014, 1:54 PM

A score out of 10 per chance?
SageMode - 2/11/2014, 1:57 PM
I love that Commander suit. Was geeked out when it transitioned to the film.
cipher - 2/11/2014, 2:02 PM
I'll just spare you the interrogation and assume the movie's awesome, McNya.
cipher - 2/11/2014, 2:03 PM
Although I could get answers out of you if I tried...

Some rope, surround sound speakers, and the greatest hits of Yoko Ono. A deadly combination.

Enough to drive a man insane.
cipher - 2/11/2014, 2:03 PM
Nah, I'm just taking the piss.
themidnightking - 2/11/2014, 2:12 PM
Damn you! Lol
Nomis - 2/11/2014, 2:17 PM
Never been a fan of his "stealth" costume, even in the comics.

But if the old red, white and Blue one figure into the plot like I think it will from what I seen in the trailer than the difference of the two in what they represent should work really well on screen!
ckal - 2/11/2014, 2:21 PM
This is my favorite Cap costume and I love his costume from Secret Avengers.
SauronsBANE - 2/11/2014, 2:22 PM
Whoa, Omega's writing articles now! Awesome find, man.

I've loved the look of this new uniform after every passing day. But as good as it looks and as much sense that it makes, it'll be better when Cap returns to his WWII era uniform. That was just so badass. This movie looks incredible, I can't wait!
Omarvls - 2/11/2014, 2:25 PM
Take the best Delta Force/ Seal Team 6 Operator make him 10 TIMES Stronger,Faster,Smarter who heals 10 TIMES faster and give him a Cosmic Weapon (Shield) and that would be Captain America a true badass
pointman - 2/11/2014, 2:32 PM

I agree. I just wish they would have showed cap in some form of training. Just because you get a serum, doesn't make you an operator. They wasted more time on that stupid song and dance montage when they could have cut that down and shown cap training with Rangers, SAS ect.
Maybe in the future they can show him taking a year off and doing a montage of him going through Ranger School/Sere, Combat Swimmers course, Jump School, combat shooting course or even a STA course to bring him up the ultimates level a little more.
KnobGoblin - 2/11/2014, 2:33 PM
He makes a good point when he says; "People can say that they’re fans of the books if they’re only loyal to the ‘60s and ‘70s version of the character – well, then you’re a fan of that version of the character." That's something more "fans" need to understand when it comes to characters that have existed for decades. The movies are not always going to represent the version of a character that you would like them too, and just like the many creative teams that have worked on the books over the years, film-makers should be allowed some creative license as long as they remain faithful to the core of the characters.
SauronsBANE - 2/11/2014, 2:36 PM
It's funny, that "stupid song and dance montage" was probably one of the BEST examples of paying homage and respecting the past of a comic book character. I mean, it's not like the filmmakers thought that whole number would be a funny little thing to throw in and so they did. They put thought into it. And most people I've talked to in life and on the internet loved those scenes.

And they even managed to make that callback and reference to Captain America's comic book roots integral to the plot! He grows so disillusioned from being a propaganda tool that he's inspired to prove everyone wrong and go and rescue Bucky and the other soldiers. Great stuff, in my opinion.
pointman - 2/11/2014, 2:38 PM
But that still doesn't explain how he got to be one of the baddest operatives in the world.
SauronsBANE - 2/11/2014, 2:50 PM
True, pointman, but my point was that you shouldn't wish for those specific montage scenes to have been cut out in favor of showing how Cap trained. You have to figure out something else that was legitimately unnecessary and think about cutting that out instead. And it's not as easy as it sounds.
GliderMan - 2/11/2014, 2:56 PM
Just hope Whedon uses his version of the costume for Avengers 2
pointman - 2/11/2014, 2:56 PM
Oh boy...........
opencurtain - 2/11/2014, 3:10 PM
The flag suit really is hard to put on the big screen the Steve Rogers suit is a great compromise .
deamon - 2/11/2014, 3:18 PM
WS should cut off his ears.
Destined - 2/11/2014, 3:23 PM
Can't wait to see both suits! I'm sure they fit perfectly with the movie.
GodzillaKart - 2/11/2014, 3:23 PM
This looks great and everything they are saying makes perfect sense.
GodzillaKart - 2/11/2014, 3:24 PM
I'm glad the went with the "ears exposed" look for the helmet. Those weird ear covers were one of the things that looked so bad in Avengers.
RamonSuarez - 2/11/2014, 3:27 PM
I like the Russos' idea of how to adapt Cap's uniform.

There wasn't an arbitrary reason for why it was made SHIELD stealth blue. The uniform represents something about where his character is at the moment as a government operative. I'm sure as he takes a more anti-establishment stance throughout the movie his uniform will become more star-spangled.
TheRationalOne - 2/11/2014, 3:28 PM
The suit Avengers was crap. It's my least favorite part of the movie. His WWII suit was so badass and perfect on terms of what that suit should look like in real life. The Avengers suit pales in comparison. The Captaib Rogers suit is way better.
UltimateHunt - 2/11/2014, 3:34 PM
so this year
Tasm, Cap, and GotG custom looks GREEEATT

DOFP had to F things up -_-
RamonSuarez - 2/11/2014, 3:38 PM
Did someone mention Yoko?

diomc - 2/11/2014, 3:40 PM

Gary8264 - 2/11/2014, 3:47 PM
I like the stealth suit, and thin' that the Russo brother's were a perfect choice for directors (or from what I've seen of the trailors), I like the fact that Steve will come into bein' Cap again, some of his best stories were used in such a way (The Nomad, The Captain, the Super Soldier). It'll make for a much more inspirin' and dramatic endin' when he shows up in the Ol' Red, White, and Blue.
pointman - 2/11/2014, 3:49 PM
In the books Cap was trained behind the scenes in several fighting styles. They never showed this.
SnapperCarr - 2/11/2014, 3:52 PM
It looks straight from the comic book. I wish DC had more comic accurate costumes as well.
