Costume Illustrator Teases 'Crossbones' Design For CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Practically confirming that we'll see Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) don his iconic threads as Crossbones, costume illustrator Christian Cordella discusses working on Captain America: The Winter Soldier!

Christian Cordell has served as the Costume illustrator for almost all of Marvel Studios' movies. Speaking with Beyond The Trailer at Comic-Con last weekend, Cordell talked a bit about his recent contribution to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After going over designs for the titular hero and villain, Cordella revealed, "I worked on Crossbones for over four months just trying to figure out the bulletproof vest and the cargo pants. Maybe in the end, everybody's going to think 'Oh it's just a [generic] SWAT suit,' but actually it's not." When asked, Cordella went on to reveal what he enjoyed most about working on the character: "I was able to do all these different versions of how to make the cross work." he said. Referring to the actual crossbones that're plastered on the character's chest in the comics, "You don't want to just put two bones [across his chest] like a pirate. So [I went] through that label so that the fans can still recognize that it's the character, but not be so literally." Captain America: The Winter Soldier was filming in Cleveland last month, when actor Frank Grillo was spotted sporting a 'S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike team'-branded uniform as Brock Rumlow. Based on Christian Cordell's comments, it seems we'll definitely see Rumlow become the villainous Crossbones, rather than in a third sequel as Grillo has implied. No word on whether we'll see the skull mask, but check out the full interview with Cordella below.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” picks up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

I was wondering when you guys were going to post an article about this.
HULK2099 - 7/25/2013, 9:02 AM
Well at least it's confirmed he will have the bones
CharlieKelly - 7/25/2013, 9:04 AM
So he is going to wear the same outfit The Punisher wore?
EpitomeofAwesome - 7/25/2013, 9:04 AM
@Jc yeah me too
TheDpool - 7/25/2013, 9:05 AM
As long as it isn't so blatant and nothing like Hawkeye was in Avengers Assemble as he was just mindless Cross Bones should be able to speak his mind.
EpitomeofAwesome - 7/25/2013, 9:07 AM
I hope Bucky isnt evil at the end
ParisSun - 7/25/2013, 9:20 AM
"You don't want to just put two bones [across his chest] like a pirate.

Why not? Isn't that what the character in the comics wears. This guy may have done a great job on the suit and hopefully we will see the mask, but I do wonder if they get it sometimes. The thrill for fans is to actually see some resemblance to the characters they love in the comics.

The job of the writer is to explain why these people dress the way they do. It seems that the writers take the least amount of effort and just put alot of characters in mundance outfits to avoid having to explain the costume. If a guy has had a psychotic break that might be enough to explain why he has two white bones on his chest. You don't have to allude to the bones just put the bones on his chest.
maryboo - 7/25/2013, 9:22 AM
Marvel's obsession with trying to make everything realistic and practical is getting ridiculous.
ParisSun - 7/25/2013, 9:30 AM
@MrMartin, I believe what maryboo is refering to is since the Avengers.

With the start of Phase 2, including IM3 with the Mandarin look, Marvel is trying for the realistic report. That's at least what we are getting from the previews. I think the movies are going to be great for Phase 2 but you at least have to understand an apprehension from some fans. Aside from Hawkeye, Avengers was the closest we've gotten to the comics from a major cbm (Watchmen might be closer though). One would think that Marvel would have stayed close to the movie that made billions of dollars and is the third highest grossing movie ever. But it does seem that Marvel is actual moving away from what made the Avengers successful. You have to give Marvel credit for taking risks but it does make people nervous.
jcfrommars9 - 7/25/2013, 9:31 AM

Actually, it's the mask that Crossbones truly wears. You can find many images on him without that Crossbones shirt but not ones without the mask.

Thank you.

Out of context, it may seem that way. But Thor: The Dark World looks no less outlandish that it did before. If anything, it's getting more immersed in that world. The Mandarin was in line with the story in Iron Man: Director of SHIELD though it is apparent that not many people know that.
marvel72 - 7/25/2013, 9:38 AM
its not crossbones without the skull mask.
ruadh - 7/25/2013, 9:39 AM
I could have SWORN I read this last night. Did I dream it? Have I become psychic?

Worthless without pics
jessepostal - 7/25/2013, 9:56 AM
They get it, but these movies are not just for the comic fans.
ALegendaryPanda - 7/25/2013, 9:58 AM
Can he at least have the damn mask?
jcfrommars9 - 7/25/2013, 10:06 AM
@batz11 and Nomis

"You don't want to just put two bones [across his chest] like a pirate. So [I went] through that label so that the fans can still recognize that it's the character, but not be so literally."

Did you guys understand a word he said?
mrteaspoon - 7/25/2013, 10:09 AM
God, some of you are the textbook definition of fickle.

Why not? Isn't that what the character in the comics wears. This guy may have done a great job on the suit and hopefully we will see the mask, but I do wonder if they get it sometimes.

:| You wonder if they GET IT? MARVEL? The company that did The Avengers? Yeah, they clearly know nothing about respecting source material and art.
Ramiel - 7/25/2013, 10:24 AM
This mask would be awesome!

Namor - 7/25/2013, 10:31 AM
The mask is a must! This is one of the guy i'm looking forward to seeing most and he should look menacing with a crazy skeleton mask!
marvel72 - 7/25/2013, 10:32 AM
@ theheat

126thst - 7/25/2013, 10:33 AM
This lady is a terrible interviewer.

THE MOST BORING interviewer/interview EVER!!!!!

she hot
sexfoodcomics - 7/25/2013, 10:48 AM
I think you actually see a split second of the skull mask in the comic con trailer. It looked like black widow was fighting him
HelaGood - 7/25/2013, 10:48 AM
we've already seen at least this much...

actionmoviefanatix - 7/25/2013, 10:51 AM
I don't understand how hard it would be to create a swat type suit that still somewhat resembles his comic book look. Hell, I'd crap my pants if a guy walked up with a skull mask of any kind, a swat suit and was loaded to the teeth. Why is that so hard to pull off in a movie?

Maybe they are going to knock it out of the park or maybe he isn't full on Crossbones yet and we are going to wait for Captain America 3 for a Red Skull / Crossbones Skeleton Crew to take Cap on. I don't know. I just don't like when filmmakers try to make realistic costumes (usually read as leather) for a superhero movie.
DCMarvelFreshman - 7/25/2013, 10:51 AM
@HelaGood Is that from the set of Cap 2!?:)
actionmoviefanatix - 7/25/2013, 10:52 AM
I've never looked at Crossbones and thought he looked like a pirate. Never.
HelaGood - 7/25/2013, 10:53 AM
i agree with @actionmoviefanatix. seriously, if Cap fought the Red Skull, a guy with a red skull for a face, in the first film, whats the big deal about putting Crossbones in a skull mask??
HelaGood - 7/25/2013, 10:55 AM
@DCMarvel - i got it from this article:

after looking at it closely, i think it has been photoshopped...
that X on his shirt is on both pics.
fettastic - 7/25/2013, 11:04 AM
I have yet to see anything good from this production, which is a stark contrast from The First Avenger.
Ramiel - 7/25/2013, 11:11 AM

So, you don't like how Winter Soldier looks? Yea, you're a dumbass.
AwesomeSauce - 7/25/2013, 11:14 AM
I bet it's going to be a tattoo across his chest or on the arm.
DCMarvelFreshman - 7/25/2013, 11:40 AM
@HelaGood Ohhh, I see now. That got me lol
