Could Robert Redford's Alexander Pierce Really Be The Red Skull In The Winter Soldier?

Could Robert Redford's Alexander Pierce Really Be The Red Skull In The Winter Soldier?

My theory (and evidence to back it up) that Robert Redford's Alexander Pierce is a cover for the true guise of The Red Skull. Read on for my full argument and evidence.

I've seen the Sneak Peek trailer, but I have a theory that the twist reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is that Alexander Pierce is The Red Skull.

First hint I got to this was Redford saying that Pierce was a villain in The Winter Soldier.

“I like the idea of playing a villain…I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.”[Source]

This is not really much to go on, in the comics Pierce is good; but then again the Iron Patriot armor was originally worn by Norman Osborn. So we can't exactly say one is the other. Marvel and their film making team love throwing us curveballs. I think this would be a great one, if you do the research you'll probably assume that the movie version of Pierce will follow Earth-616's version who is good. Tricky move, but it could work.

Secondly, came the line from the sneak peek, where Pierce says the following:

"To build a better world, it means tearing the old one down. This makes enemies"

Now, if we're assuming that this Pierce is an exact adaption of Earth-616's this seems kind of odd doesn't it. This sounds like Red Skull talk. Destroying the world, rebuilding on that foundation of what is destroyed. That sounds like HYDRA and Skull to me, not that of a good guy working for SHIELD. Again, maybe I could be wrong, but I can't imagine Pierce, a Good guy, saying stuff like that.

Finally, there's the 'Winter Soldier' episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes where it's revealed that Red Skull has remained active and alive, while infiltrating the US as Dell Rusk, a man who eventually becomes Secretary of Defense.

It could be that instead of Dell Rusk, the Russo brothers and Marvel are adapting a similar story for The Winter Soldier where it will be revealed Alexander Pierce, (as) The Red Skull, has infiltrated SHIELD and is manipulating the agency and many other government institutions to further his goals -- along the way using The Winter Soldier as a tool.

Only time will tell if I'm right or not, but I do think I have a few good pieces of evidence to believe this could be the case; and having the Red Skull be stuck in the past just seems wrong. I've always enjoyed the idea with Cap that the sins of the past continue to haunt him in the future.

What do you guys think? Do you think Alexander Pierce is Red Skull? Sound off in the comments below, please consider thumbing this article up, and as always, follow me on Twitter @The_Hulksta where you can follow my shenanigans and read more of my articles.

nice nice nice nice nice!!!! im still holding out for the ultimate red skull who is caps child.
PsychoManiacJacky - 10/23/2013, 9:53 PM
He is totally the Red Skull
WYLEEJAY - 10/23/2013, 10:00 PM
Yep. I agree. If they reveal him to be Zemo it won't be as big a impact since he hasn't already been introduced in the mcu yet. The ga would be like "ok, who is this guy and why should we care". Now if Red Skull reveals himself, that would have a much bigger impact on Steve Rodgers as well.
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2013, 10:09 PM
It wouldn't be the first time Red Skull has used a false identity to hatch some master plan.

He's done it a few times in the comics, and like you said, in the animated series.
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2013, 10:10 PM
Plus, i would really like Red Skull to be brought into the current timeline.

I think Zemo would be a good villain for Cap 3...with some flashbacks of Cap fighting his father in WWII to explain their connection of course.
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2013, 10:11 PM
Not to mention I love Zemo.

I think ya might be onto something...
sounds like something an idiotic director tried to pull on us..

oh yeah its been done before.

shane black.
Would still be cool. At least he wouldnt turn out to be a
superotherside - 10/23/2013, 10:40 PM
Good idea. You could easily be right.

Jdwyler404 Are you crazy? That was one of the worst parts in Ultimates. Why would you want to adopt that story?

CorndogBurglar - 10/24/2013, 3:10 AM
@ Nolanite

Yeah, Nolan would never try to have a villain hide their identity and pretend to be someone they aren't......oh wait.
Lhornbk - 10/24/2013, 5:30 AM
It was not clear if Red Skull died, or was basically teleported somewhere else. Having said that, I don't believe this theory. Mainly because I was under the impression that the actor who played Red Skull in TFA was still under contract.
GinjaNinja - 10/24/2013, 5:50 AM
As long as we see arnim zola in full robot gear I don't care if thats the red skull or not.
JohnnyRoss - 10/24/2013, 6:24 AM

Hugo Weaving, the actor who played Red Skull in TFA, stated that he doesn't want to come back.
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 6:50 AM
so? he's under CONTRACT he doesnt get the choice @Joross. but i think no RED SKULL will be revealed until CAP 3 to do a book mark thing. ZEMO can still be the villain employing ZOLA (who is def in the film). this way the book end thing can be done RED SKULL in CAP 1 + CAP 3. makes more sense from a literary standpoint
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 6:51 AM
think about it like a comic arc
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 6:55 AM
PIERCE will be ZEMOs son the 2nd ZEMO he is manipulating things from SHIELD following his Dads example finishing what he started since the cold war, all the while theyve been manipulating BUCKY AKA THE WINTER SOLDIER since his fatal accident
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 6:58 AM
to hurt AMERICAs security now that CAPS back they need to focus their attention on bringing down the ultimate AMERICAN symbol and destroying it
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 6:59 AM
to kill AMERICAs spirit, metaphorically
xcrementus - 10/24/2013, 7:20 AM
Weaving's contract probably options for more than one movie, so he only gets paid per movie. So if he didn't wanna come back, and they dont really want somebody back who badmouths them (Ed Norton,Terence Howard) they can just recast.
Sucks, cus he was totally awesome as Skull.
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 7:45 AM
cant wait to see how they depict CROSSBONES. if tey pull some sort of IM3 COLDBLOOD on the character i'll be pissed. i love CROSSBONES and cared very very lil forr COLDBLOOD anyway
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 7:48 AM
the thing was they wanted out of Marvel. they both didnt want to be mandated to so MARVEL killed their contracts. just b/c WEAVING doesnt want to come back doesnt mean they wont force him to
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 7:49 AM
WEAVING doesnt mind anything but the makeup
dellamorte1872 - 10/24/2013, 7:54 AM
when MARVEL wants to cut their loses they will until then they will make sure their contacts are adhered to
GinjaNinja - 10/24/2013, 12:11 PM
I'm hoping that he is Baron Zemo. That would allow us to see Red Skull for a final film if they want to. Bring back hugo.
GliderMan - 10/24/2013, 6:00 PM
Um this isn't really good evidence, but man I hope you're right.
CorndogBurglar - 10/24/2013, 9:54 PM
Was Hugo Weaving really important? Its prosthetics. You can't even tell its him under all that makeup, not to mention, it isn't like he gave some stellar performance that could never be duplicated.
HulkbusterNYC - 10/25/2013, 11:13 AM
The only plausible scenerio to bring back Red Skull IMO is to show that when the cube transported him it brought him to a distant planet in space where he remained for years until finally bumping into Thanos or one of his underlings. They strike a deal to get Thanos what he wants and get Skull back to Earth. Maybe Skull doesn't age like a normal person because of the serum he was injected with. It's not much but how else would they be able to explain how he isn't dead or a billion light years away in space? I just thought of something else, maybe they could show Red Skull in imprisoned in the same prison as the GoTG? I know Im reaching lol
OrgasmicPotatoe - 10/26/2013, 9:33 AM
Yeah, I can definitely see this happen. Also, remember how they said that Cap 2 was a spy movie ? That could also be true for Red Skull. While Cap is spying the enemy, he doesn't know the enemy is spying on him too. That would work. It would also emphasize Red Skull's threat.
TheRealDorkKnight - 11/2/2013, 8:19 PM
Ive been thinking this myself. good man.
