Ed Brubaker's Reaction To Finding Out About CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Ed Brubaker's Reaction To Finding Out About CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

What happened when Ed Brubaker (the writer who created The Winter Solider) found out that the title of the Captain America: The First Avenger sequel is Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Well, his reaction on Twitter was a very simple one!

Like Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben, Bucky was a character who it was always thought would stay dead. As World War II drew to a close, Captain America and his sidekick attempted to stop an experimental drone plane launched by Baron Zemo. Unfortunately, Bucky failed to disarm it and it blew up over the North Atlantic, seemingly killing him and resulting in Cap spending decades frozen in ice before being discovered by The Avengers. However, in 2005, writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting brought Bucky back as The Winter Soldier. It turned out that his one-armed body was discovered by the Russians, and the amnesiac hero was brainwashed (and implanted with a bionic arm) into becoming a Soviet assassin and put into stasis between missions. Eventually, he would regain his memories and take up the Captain America mantle, but "The Winter Soldier" arc is considered one of the greatest Captain America stories of all-time.

That's probably why fans were so excited when Marvel Studios announced the title of the Captain America: The First Avenger sequel at last night's San Diego Comic-Con; Captain America: The Winter Soldier. How did Ed Brubaker feel about this? Well, his reaction on Twitter yesterday was a very simple one indeed!

Can they please bring Brubaker on as a consultant or something? It's HIS story after all! Bucky was always the one character who would never come back from the dead. Brubaker brought him back and made him kickass!

They'll need to change a few things unless Red Skull comes back and Bucky kills him again. Other than that, I don't see how they could F%$! this up.
manymade1 - 7/15/2012, 4:58 PM
@ marvel72 He really wants to write Spider-Man and he may get his wish with thee whole Marvel Now thing.
SCURVYDOG619 - 7/15/2012, 5:01 PM
Another reason I wish Marvel Studios had the X-Men rights,so we could have seen the Winter Soldier killing Wolverine's girlfriend, for starters....
TheGambitFreak - 7/15/2012, 5:02 PM
Ok, so how is this going to work? Sebastian Stan is playing a gay boy on Political Animals. I'm pretty sure the show hasn't even aired yet, so in his contract, is he allowed a leave to go do Cap 2? Regardless, the guy did great, I can't wait to see him bulk up and gain long hair and a bionic arm!

Cap 2, seeing as how he is my favorite Avenger, I am freaking pumped for this, and I'm still iffy on the Wonder Twins helming it, but what I want to know is how the hell are they gonna fit Winter Soldier in it... As in, the russian storyline... I anticipate news on the plot.
I do hope they tie Winter Soldier in with Hawkeye/Widow's little conversation they had in Avengers. It'd be nice to watch Steve go ballistic finding out they knew about Bucky all along.

This is why I wanted the deleted Cap scenes in Avengers to make the cut. Joss made Steve feel isolated; Alone. It would be cool to see him visit Peggy's and Bucky's grave site, then realize he's out there somewhere. Which rings me to my final statement/question: Shouldn't they of waited till the 3rd film to do Barnes? I mean, so they could ground Cap more as a character, make him more devastated that he's a man out of time, so that in 3, he gains faith then drops it when Winter Soldier tries to kill him... Anyways, I'm very much looking forward to this freaking movie, Captan America is badass!

MattSpatola - 7/15/2012, 5:03 PM
Sebastian signed a standard 6 picture deal with Marvel so I'm guessing he's very excited right about now.
TheGambitFreak - 7/15/2012, 5:05 PM
*Brings, not rings.
CherryBomb - 7/15/2012, 5:07 PM

@TheGambitFreak Political Animals is only a 6 part miniseries, and will already finish by the time this begins filming.

@MARVELPSYCHO79 Haha, thank you very much!
Wildaniel - 7/15/2012, 5:08 PM

I hope they show Bucky being found by Russians in one of the end credits for Iron Man 3 or Thor 2.
dopemaster - 7/15/2012, 5:11 PM
are Russians still bad guys?
GUNSMITH - 7/15/2012, 5:18 PM

James "Bucky" Barnes was a orphaned kid who took part in an intensive Black Ops training to become the partner of Steve Rogers, A.K.A. Captain America, during the World War II.

Throughout the war, Cap and Bucky fought alongside infantry and with a group of heroes known as the Invaders, as well as other groups of younger heroes.

In the closing months of World War II, Captain America and Bucky were both presumed dead in an explosion over the English Channel.

It was learned that Bucky was revived and brainwashed by Soviets as the assassin Winter Soldier.

With the help of Captain America, he recovered his memory and after the apparent murder of Rogers, Bucky took the mantle of Captain America. Although Steve Rogers returned, Bucky remained as Captain America. After Bucky was almost killed by Red Skull's daughter, Sin, he decided to fake his death and secretly return to his role as the Winter Soldier, with his lover, Black Widow.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited that they're adapting this excellent story....but am I the only one who feels like Bucky wasn't even in the first Cap movie enough to make his return feel impacting? I feel like when he returns as Winter Soldier and it is revealed that its Bucky audiences will react like "Who? Bucky? Was that a character in the first one?"
Pauul - 7/15/2012, 5:48 PM
Yeah, I kinda think it feels too soon as well.

As long as they keep it a mystery as to who the Winter Soldier actually is, we can have Cap feeling isolated in the beginning of the film.

And a lot would need to be changed because as well as not being able to bring back the Red Skull just to kill him off, you don't have Sharon Carter set up, the other Captain Americas aren't established, there's no Nomad for Bucky to kill and frame...

So, maybe they're keeping true to the character of the Winter Soldier but I'm guessing the events of the story will be quite different.

Captain America two better pick it up from the first; it was a cliche filled bore fest in my opinion. The ending sequence (from the kiss to the final fight) was just terrible. The action was slowly paced as well.

Having said that I do like Chris Evans and just hope they get better writers.
EggsBenedict - 7/15/2012, 6:30 PM
I love Brubaker. I'm sad he's leaving Cap, but am glad he'll still be doing the Winter Soldier solo comic. I'd like it more if something like JStark said...if it is 2-part story/over-arching storyline for the next two films.

But, I'm still sad that WS story is happening this soon...

I'll recommend a post by Grimfoe on a previous thread, and I'll repost something I wrote on that same thread:

Although I'm thrilled that the Winter Soldier story is going to be in a Cap movie, I would have preferred it to be the end of the trilogy.

Bucky's death is an integral part of what forms Captain America's personality. He was dead for about 40 years. I love the WS story, but I feel it is too soon in the movie universe to reveal Bucky's actually alive. We need to see Cap's pain. Not to mention, what will be a good ending to the trilogy? And...this necessities WS' inclusion in the 3rd movie, doesn't it? Bucky was dead for a long, long, long while in the comics, and - for Cap - it should hurt for a while.

Too soon for WS...

Hmm, not with the current writer/director combination. They would mishandle it. Mind you this isn't exactly the comics either so we can't have multiple film arcs. I think they would just get boring waiting for them to do a reveal.
YOUNGBL00D - 7/15/2012, 6:33 PM
I agree with LAWLZY96, I like Bucky as a character, but I didn't exactly like the way he was portrayed in the movie, I wanted to feel sad when died in the movie, but I wasnt as emotionally invested in him, as I thought I should have been.

This will be the best of all thase 2 movies
eleven59 - 7/15/2012, 7:20 PM
Well just seeing he's still alive will make cap very happy as he's a link to that past. Cap won't feel alone. Yet ironically Bucky wants to kill him, so it very likely can lead to mixed emotions and more confusion. So I can see it work and add to caps loneliness. It's one giant mind fck

And yes...

MadJakHatesSpinoffs - 7/15/2012, 7:50 PM
I really hope Brubaker takes over Spider-Man and replaces Daniel Slot. Slot SUCKS!
GrayMatter - 7/15/2012, 7:51 PM
I think that ideally, we wouldn't find out that the Winter Soldier is Bucky until the 3rd movie. In the 2nd one, WS would be the bad guy, but then get away in the end. Then in the 3rd movie, he would start off evil, but half-way through the movie there'd be the big reveal as he got his memories back, and then he'd help Cap fight whoever the main baddie of the 3rd movie is. Plus, throughout the 2 movies up until that point, there'd be flashbacks and whatnot to help emphasize the impact of his death on Cap.

The only problem is how to keep the audience in the dark that the WS is Bucky. In the comics it was a big shocker, but in the movie as soon as Sebastian Stan shows up, everyone will know who he is. He'd need like a full face mask or something.
GrayMatter - 7/15/2012, 7:53 PM
Oh, and on a different note, I'd love to see Widow and Bucky romantically involved somehow in the future. Mainly because I'd like to see Marvel screw with all the critics who kept referring to how Widow and Hawkeye were obviously a couple in the Avengers.
