Joe Russo Teases New CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Team-Up And Confirms WINTER SOLDIER Creative Team

Will Captain America 3 kick off The Secret Wars? Probably not, but co-director Joe Russo name-drops the epic comic book storyline and also talks exceeding expectations among other things. Check it out!

"From a crew standpoint, it's almost everybody," said Captain America 3 co-director Joe Russo (via Comic Book) of which players and elements from The Winter Soldier will return for the 2016 Marvel threequel. "[Composer] Henry Jackman's back, our whole technical crew for the most part is back. We're Italian; we love a big happy family. We love consistency and a lot of people did a great job on the last movie." Also returning is cinematographer Trent Opaloch, as reported months ago. "From a character standpoint, it falls into the category of what you can and can't say working for Marvel. Certainly Captain America will be back. The expectation would be that Bucky will be back and there's certain characters in the Marvel Universe that Cap has a strong connection to but we've also got some tricks up our sleeve for this one an we're hard at work. That's a very crowded summer and there's high expectations so we're all hard at work trying to exceed those expectations and really carve out a big, splashy idea for Captain America 3."

Meanwhile, in a seperate interview with Cinema Blend, Joe Russo implied there are other additional superhero characters besides Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye in Captain America 3. When asked specifically which Avengers he and co-director Anthony Russo would like to include in role similar to Black Widow's in The Winter Soldier, Joe replied, "That’s such a hard question because we’ve kind of already done that." He's basically confirming that the character(s) are already in the screenplay. "Do they have to be under contract with Marvel? Maybe they are at another studio," he added, which seemingly prompted Cinema Blend to ask if Spider-Man, or any other character not owned by Marvel Studios, could show up in Cap 3 for a team-up. "Listen, when I started collecting, The Secret Wars was one of the first books I ever bought, so that’s always been an obsession of mine to see something of that scale done – a crossover," said Joe Russo. "I don’t know if that would ever be possible, with all the different situations at the studios. But I would love to see a lot of characters on screen together." What do you think?

The other article is still up.

"Certainly Captain America will be back."

I knew it!
Reasonnnn - 8/25/2014, 8:05 PM
Loved Winter Soldier's theme, but Henry Jackman has to step up with the rest of thes core.
EthanSmith1 - 8/25/2014, 8:06 PM

Or it's a typo and they really said black!

Just kidding lol
blackandyellow - 8/25/2014, 8:10 PM
I think they'll take inspiration from Secret Empire and end it with Cap giving up the identity.

SauronsBANE - 8/25/2014, 8:10 PM
@EthanSmith1, LOL.

I might be alone on this one, but I'd love to see Falcon take over as Cap in the MCU. I get that Bucky is supposed to because of the comics and all that...but it'd be a tremendous waste to not have Sam Wilson expand his role like that in the movies.
JamesMan - 8/25/2014, 8:12 PM
Can we get a new cinematographer? I wasn't to big a fan of the one that did Winter Soldier outside of the boat battle and final fight. It looked like they used a grey filter that really clashed with some of the CGI and shots.
TheRationalNerd - 8/25/2014, 8:15 PM

Just why? Why? lol
TheRationalNerd - 8/25/2014, 8:19 PM

Yeah I heard some rumors from that twitter guy that insisted Cap's teammates within this film would be nothing like you'd see before but I know it's a very slim chance of being true...
GiantNerd - 8/25/2014, 8:20 PM

More Winter Soldier please.
JoJo1982 - 8/25/2014, 8:22 PM
I have that feeling that Black Panther may pop up now. Just when the Russe said it's going to be a crowded summer and they got some tricks up their sleeves.
Black panther in the movie would be perfect to keep with the rest of the competition
Dingbat - 8/25/2014, 8:34 PM
I honestly can't remember what the score for this film sounds like. Good movie though, and Henry Jackman has done some amazing work

Luminus - 8/25/2014, 8:51 PM
"Do they have to be under contract with Marvel? Maybe they are at another studio..."

So, Wolverine is going to be in it. Only, he'll be referred to as Logan only. Got it.
MericawithanM - 8/25/2014, 8:57 PM
I know we had Black widow in the last one, but I would love to see her come back for cap 3.
Inhuman - 8/25/2014, 8:59 PM
Captain America 3 featuring Hawkeye, Black Widow, Falcon, Bucky, Baron Zemo, Viper, and Crossbones

Sounds like one epic movie to me
Inhuman - 8/25/2014, 9:01 PM
Hawkeye needs more screen time. He's the deadliest male agent in SHIELD so there should be no reason why he doesnt show up in Cap 3. That was my beef with Cap 2, how do you have a heavy SHIELD presence in the movie and not show Hawkeye??? You show Black Widow, Nick Fury, and Maria Hill, but no Hawkeye??? Captain America is a SHIELD agent which means he should be interacting with Black Widow and Hawkeye constantly
Inhuman - 8/25/2014, 9:02 PM
I guarantee you Hawkeye is the one who defeats Ultron
Inhuman - 8/25/2014, 9:07 PM
2 people getting shafted for screen time, Hawkeye and Hulk. Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor have multiple solo outings, and Black Widow was heavily featured in 2 solo films. I think Hulk gets a sequel in Phase 3 so that makes up his lack of screen time, now Hawkeye is all thats left. I think if they were to feature Hawkeye in Cap 3, it would make up for his lack of screen time. Its all about balancing it out to the best of your ability and making everyone happy.
JillyMcBeam - 8/25/2014, 9:13 PM
Obvious trolls are obvious.
DaVinci31 - 8/25/2014, 9:13 PM

It's fascinating that he would refer to something like the Secret Wars, a story line from the comics that would be almost tonally opposite from The Winter Soldier.
Bekss - 8/25/2014, 9:21 PM
I just saw Captain America The Winter Soldier in my home with some friends, a couple of beers and some snacks.
One of the best mondays of my life.
DylanTBest - 8/25/2014, 9:24 PM
He said Captain America would be back, not Steve Rogers.

Also, great job guys, 2 comments in and there's already a stupid "Marvel Vs. DC" comment.
XelCorp - 8/25/2014, 9:28 PM
Glad to hear they are still trying to really go all out with the threequel. Directors can sometimes tend to get lazy after the success of their prior films (Ego kicks in)
batmanvsuperman - 8/25/2014, 9:29 PM

A guy can dream
BobbyDrakeApproaches - 8/25/2014, 9:36 PM
I absolutely love Secret Wars, and a movie version would be a dream come true. It does not even have to be a very faithful adaption, just a huge collection of heroes and villains assembled by the Beyonder to fight on Battleworld.

The only problem is that Spidey, the FF and the X-Men are all with other studios, and I can't imagine a satisfying adaption without them.
TheAstoundingMan - 8/25/2014, 9:37 PM

How do you come up with such zingers?
String - 8/25/2014, 9:43 PM
With if it is true about Cap's broken shield in Avengers 2 -I've been thinking Tchalla might show up in Cap 3. Glad to hear Hawkeye might be showing up since he is underserved so far. I don't know of anyone else showing up besides Winter Soldier and Falcon. I love it was Namor -possibly other studio spoiler -since he has a connection to Cap and Black Panther in the comics.
Dandy - 8/25/2014, 9:44 PM
Yeah! Winter Soldier will be back again. Hopefully they do bring in Hawkeye, because he could use more appearances in the MCU.
MarkV - 8/25/2014, 9:49 PM
CBM of the year!
OrionPax - 8/25/2014, 9:50 PM
I'd like to see some sort of reference to what happened to The Red Skull!!And maybe even tie Baron Zemo into Hydra and all that jazz
skeebolistic84 - 8/25/2014, 9:51 PM
phuck that!!! bring black panther to shut shit down
wallhead - 8/25/2014, 9:51 PM

are all of those tie in comics canon? I remember one specifically having comic malekith in it before he appeared in the dark world..
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 8/25/2014, 9:52 PM
@Luminus I know this is BS, but wouldn't it be cool if Wolverine somehow showed up in a Cap flashback during WWII?

Personal theory: Owing to the fact Cap 3 will continue using Cap as a vehicle for political commentary, per the Russo brothers' comments, I think this film will tackle U.S. foreign relations since we've already covered our domestic spying issues.

It would be great, therefore, if the film took place in Africa, specifically in and around the nation of Wakanda. It could introduce a huge threat to the region, the U.S.'s involvement (even manufacturing) of that threat, and Black Panther.

Throw in Bucky, Hawkeye, and a suitable villain (Red Skull? Baron Zemo?), and you have a bombastic film on your hands.

DeusExSponge - 8/25/2014, 9:56 PM
IMO, 'Taking a Stand' has to be one of the best OSTs Marvel Studios has to offer when it comes to their MCU property. Loved that soundtrack and boy did it amplify the awesomeness of Cap taking down that SHIELD plane.
TheShroud - 8/25/2014, 10:02 PM

don't forget Agents of Shield Season 2 is going to start airing BEFORE A:AOU hits
NoPhucksGiven - 8/25/2014, 10:12 PM
I just want zemo, red skull, and hawkeye. everything thing else I don't give a [frick] about.
