Russo Directors Tease 'Big Shift In MCU' Through CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Further promising something "significant" happening at the end of the sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors elaborate how the "shift" will affect The Avengers: Age of Ultron and more!

One of the major reveals that came out of Comic-Con wasn't just The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but also that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will have the biggest bridge to Joss Whedon's sequel. The 2014 "70s political thriller" will also have a "significant shift in the [Marvel cinematic] universe," near its end, says co-director Joe Russo. "Like all of the Marvel movies [The Winter Soldier] has elements of all of the other films, this one I think has probably the strongest bond between those goals." He continued, "The interesting thing about that is that the script was structured so well that it’s not really something that… The things that happen in the movie are really germane to the movie and germane to Cap. The big shift in the universe happens because of him. It’s not something where we had to feel like we had to patchwork in all of these other narrative elements, it’s really [Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely wrote an amazing script that really streamlined this concept that Kevin wanted to get out there."

Anthony Russo adds that the big shift is, "Very personal to Cap, too. I think that’s the other thing, even though it’s a big event that connects it to the rest of the universe, it’s very much Cap’s relationship to that and we enter the whole thing through him. So it’s all riding on his shoulders and in terms of his experience at this moment with this movie." What do you think?

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” picks up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

whoa123 - 7/23/2013, 4:45 PM
After seeing the paintball episode in 'Community'. I m hoping that the Russo bros. deliver.
SageMode - 7/23/2013, 4:47 PM

If your real into it and feel passionate about any project then youll do a good job with any movie besides your previous films!
xfan320 - 7/23/2013, 5:11 PM
^^Ultron face/silhouette was teased at SDCC, right??

I believe they said it was like his classic look.

Cap 2 will work wonders for Evans' character!!!

Equal parts bourne with a little tom clancy tossed in!!!

Woo people!
LordoftheThrones26 - 7/23/2013, 5:15 PM
I believe so but in a video interview Joss said how he hayed that Ultron expressed only one facial emotion and how hed like to change that so I hope theu dont screw him up so some prissy actor gets face time on screen!
Darkknight23 - 7/23/2013, 5:18 PM
IN MARVEL WE TRUST! This film will be just as epic as IM3! Just keep the jokes coming!!!!
Havensent - 7/23/2013, 5:20 PM
Can't wait to see this!
NostalgicYouth - 7/23/2013, 5:20 PM
I think Captain America is going to leave SHIELD, and SHIELD and the Government will not be trusted to help The Avengers in the sequel.
80sFace - 7/23/2013, 5:22 PM
I was in Hall H. Was skeptical, but the footage looked amazing. Way beyond what I imagined.

As to the MCU universe shift, my guess ... SHIELD is disbanded or destroyed. Or Fury is ousted and is on the run.
TheManFromMars - 7/23/2013, 5:22 PM
CA:TWS is my most anticipated Phase 2 movie (Yes, that counts Age of Ultron)
SoftNumNums - 7/23/2013, 5:23 PM
Cap is probably responsible for Ultron.
TheWolverine08 - 7/23/2013, 5:23 PM
Can't wait for this movie. We'll see why the Sentinel of Liberty is so great.
TheRedSkull - 7/23/2013, 5:24 PM
Yeah, I just think SHIELD will go rogue. I don't see it being that huge...
pro346 - 7/23/2013, 5:25 PM
Well considering cap 1 was dull...I don't have high hopes for this one....the first had so much potential but didn't really deliver.
TheRedSkull - 7/23/2013, 5:25 PM
And yeah, I hope they don't sacrifice a badadd Ultron to show some face time for a shitty actor. I want the original Ultron!
TheRedSkull - 7/23/2013, 5:25 PM
Stranga17 - 7/23/2013, 5:25 PM
I'm thinking Civil War. They teased it at the end of the Avengers. SHIELD will do something to piss off Cap and he'll go against them.
Durf - 7/23/2013, 5:27 PM
Hmmm, interesting. Something to do with SHIELD I would wager
Lockjaw - 7/23/2013, 5:29 PM
The Wonder Woman movie will be so much better than this...oh wait there is no WW movie.

IM3 was a bad way to start phase 2. Let's see if thor can change my mind about where this is heading to.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/23/2013, 5:35 PM
I think he's gonna die. =O
MarkV - 7/23/2013, 5:37 PM
Cap becomes head of SHIELD
NovaTroy - 7/23/2013, 5:41 PM
Maybe Bucky becomes Cap for a bit while Steve Rogers is a Shield director like what happened during the "Heroic Age" after the "Siege" series. Doubt it but who knows.
MisterNiceGuy - 7/23/2013, 5:41 PM
"IN MARVEL WE TRUST! This film will be just as epic as IM3! Just keep the jokes coming!!!!"

Looks like Cap is going to be the star of Avengers 2 unlike Iron Man being the star in the first one.
One word - GOOD

Disbanding S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't make any sense considering there will be a show named after and revolving entirely around the organization when this movie comes out. That would be way too difficult to coordinate between TV and this movie. I'm thinking Avengers or Cap goes rogue or that S.H.I.E.L.D. does the same. Either that or the cybernetics on Bucky prompt S.H.I.E.L.D. to experiment and inadvertently create Ultron?
oldschoolavenger98 - 7/23/2013, 5:48 PM
enough with the butthurt for IM3. It was a great film. Stop bitching about the Mandarin.
