UPDATE: Robert Redford In Talks For Role In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

The founder of the Sundance Film Festival (who has also dabbled in everything from acting to directing) is reportedly in talks for a role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While the specific character isn't revealed, it sounds as if he will play a major role in S.H.I.E.L.D. Read on for details!

Deadline reports that Robert Redford (All the President's Men) is in talks to join the cast of Anthony and Joe Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Unsurprisingly given Marvel's preference for secrecy, they were unable to find out exactly who he will play, but his part in the movie will apparently involve having a, "senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D." The sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on April 4th, 2014, and the site adds that they believe Redford will continue to appear in other Marvel Studios releases after this one. Redford is perhaps best known for being the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, although he has appeared in an acting capacity in many notable movies. Who do you guys think he could be playing?

UPDATE: According to THR, "Sources say that Redford will be playing an older member of secret government agency SHIELD, and one source has compared the role as similar to the one played by Ralph Fiennes as M’s replacement in last year’s James Bond movie Skyfall."

spidey1994 - 3/22/2013, 11:11 AM

"Redford is perhaps best known for being the founder of the Sundance Film Festival"

WHAT? He's one of the most respected, famous actors in film history! Sundance is a footnote to his bio, dude.

SageMode - 3/22/2013, 11:21 AM
Great news. Bing a senior SHIELD member at that. Glad to hear more about this movie.
SpoonWielder - 3/22/2013, 11:21 AM
This is awesome news! Redford can honestly do no wrong. I honestly thought Baron Zemo before I read the actual article.
Maybe he's becoming Samuel L. Jackson's replacement. Not another Nick Fury, but a character just like him.
Gary8264 - 3/22/2013, 11:21 AM
Where do you thin' "Sundance" came from? "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"....

Robert "freakin" Redford? How does what now? Good for them. Sheesh.
Murr3n - 3/22/2013, 11:27 AM
I always thought a young Redford would of been the perfect Matt Murdock, am I alone?
DrDoom - 3/22/2013, 11:27 AM
Probably a member of the World Security Council.... or perhaps.... in the wake of Hugo Weaving not wanting to be around any more.... Del Rusk?

MiracleMe - 3/22/2013, 11:27 AM
Alright Marvel! Hope this happens!
Maybe Whedon has a part in Avengers 2 for Robert DeNiro!
Daniel Day Lewis IS Dr Strange!!!

Zorsey - 3/22/2013, 11:27 AM
//although he has appeared in an acting capacity in many notable movies.//

Ya don't say?
jessepostal - 3/22/2013, 11:28 AM
I thought tfa was the best marvel movie pre avengers, not a big fan of how the treated cap in avengers though.
CaptainNetherlands - 3/22/2013, 11:28 AM
"senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D."

Mmm... who could that be?
Checking all my Marvel comics, but have no idea who that could be.
Damn you Marvel and your secrecy!

Seejay - 3/22/2013, 11:30 AM

Great news!
Optimus83 - 3/22/2013, 11:30 AM
Cool. ...Robert Redford
dezdigi - 3/22/2013, 11:31 AM
Awesome, they need a good veteran actor to lend his clout this movie and now they got it!
dezdigi - 3/22/2013, 11:32 AM
He's Baron Zemo ... jk!
InfiniteMonkey - 3/22/2013, 11:32 AM
WoW. He's probably the Chairman of shield who answers to the conglomerate or something.

This is intense. Marvel is Kicking Dat Ass!
Havenless - 3/22/2013, 11:33 AM
Alright guys, get this:

What if they use Nick Fury not as a man's name, but as a term referring to the director of SHIELD? So before SLJ, the previous director was also codenamed 'Nick Fury'. So when SLJ is captured by Crossbones and his HYDRA goons, SHIELD must turn to the former director, retired 'Nick Fury' Robert Redford?
Grimfoe - 3/22/2013, 11:34 AM
He could play an older Dum Dum. He doesn't really look like the comic character, but he DOES look like Neal McDonough.
jj72 - 3/22/2013, 11:36 AM
Redford = Legit actor on all levels

LOL. If Marvel manages to get Daniel Day Lewis, look for that CBM to have the first Best Actor winner
wondermarq - 3/22/2013, 11:36 AM
My first thought was an older present-day Dum Dum Dugan. Only other important S.H.I.E.L.D. character I could think of.
ClobberPot - 3/22/2013, 11:41 AM
Great. Tommy Lee Jones was the BEST part of CA:TFA, which was almost as good as Thor, IMO; I didn't dig the CGI sequences.
iJackSparrow - 3/22/2013, 11:48 AM
Senior S.H.I.E.L.D. leadership... are they going the 616 route and making Sam Jackson's Nick Fury Jr. to Robert Redford's Nick Fury? Regardless, I'm stoked.
