UPDATE: Toby Jones Confirms ‘Arnim Zola’ Reprisal In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

UPDATE: Toby Jones Confirms ‘Arnim Zola’ Reprisal In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Previously expressing his desire to reprise his ‘Arnim Zola’ role from Captain America: The First Avenger in The Winter Soldier sequel, Marvel has since granted Toby Jones’ wish, the actor reveals.

During the Golden Globes last week, English actor Toby Jones had revealed his desire to reprise his role as the Red Skull’s right-hand man, Arnim Zola, from Captain America: The First Avenger in the forthcoming sequel, The Winter Soldier. And within a week, Jones’ wish has apparently since been granted, according to Joe Cunningham of HeyUGuys. Speaking with the actor on the red carpet of the Critics Circle Awards, Toby Jones apparently let slip that he received ‘the call’ from Marvel and will indeed return as the iconic villain in the Russo Brothers-directed superhero political thriller.

UPDATE: HeyUGuys has just provided the video of their interview with Jones. Skip to the very end.

The folks from HeyUGuys promise a video of the interview later tonight, but we can speculate now about the presence of Arnim Zola’s role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While he's likely appearing in flashbacks, perhaps, we may finally see his true comic book counterparts translate on-screen. Zola once created a device that would not only transfer someone’s essence to a clone, but also allow them to survive into modern times. Eventually using the device on himself, his body was replaced with a stronger, android one. This was teased in The First Avenger. What do you think?

Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Toby Jones, Cobie Smulders with Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joe Russo & Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and is scheduled for release on April 4, 2014.

Spideyguy94 - 1/20/2013, 12:33 PM
I'd rather see baron zemo, especially since he's a big part in the winter soldier storyline.
SomTingWong - 1/20/2013, 12:40 PM
First the im3 trailer then the AAA interview and now this! Phase 2 will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!
SomTingWong - 1/20/2013, 12:43 PM
Can't wait to see his and cap's and falcon's and zemo's (it's a no-brainer he has to be there) costume!
FrenzyFreak - 1/20/2013, 12:55 PM
Great news. Really like Toby Jones as an actor. We still have two more roles to be filled, though. Sharon Carter, who I think will be played by Jessica Brown Findlay, as well as the main villain role still up for grabs between Josh Holloway and Nikolaj Coster Waldau, presumable Baron Zemo😊.
Rhysno1 - 1/20/2013, 1:19 PM
AlexDeLarge87 - 1/20/2013, 1:20 PM

Coster-Waldau as Zemo.
LexHairFight - 1/20/2013, 1:22 PM
I was just thinking today about who the 'big bad' is in Cap 2. If my memory is correct we really only had Crossbones and I'm not sure that's enough - given all the heroes in it. Baron I'm looking for you next.
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 1:23 PM
[frick] yes. Awesome news!
Dunejedi - 1/20/2013, 1:27 PM
Hopefully, Marvel sacks up and gives him one good scene in the robot body. And if Coster Waldau does get tapped for Zemo, I'll cream my jeans.
LexHairFight - 1/20/2013, 1:32 PM
Now that I think about it, he could just be there to appear in the 'origin' story. He was working on Bucky when Cap found him, there could be some extra scenes filmed around that, which may mean not floating robotic head with t'rex arms.
MrReese - 1/20/2013, 1:35 PM
Baron should be the 1 that is pulling Bucky's strings as the Winter Soldier.
Moakynubs - 1/20/2013, 1:35 PM
It's cool to see some continuity here, with the time gap, it makes it hard to connect this movie to the first one. Glad to see he's coming back in some form.
TheSoulEater - 1/20/2013, 1:36 PM
Just don't put him in Captain America's Chest
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 1:42 PM
Now, there's another Cap villain I want to see (besides Zemo, obviously)....

jessepostal - 1/20/2013, 1:46 PM
Great Day to be a Cap fan!!

Im happy even if it's just flashbacks of him experimenting on Bucky.

ATrueHero1987 - 1/20/2013, 2:09 PM

SkateandDestroy88 - 1/20/2013, 2:13 PM
All right ! ! ! ! So stoked to see what marvel has in store for phase 2. This film will be comiing out in 2014, eh. All right ! ! !

1st we can look forward to Iron Man 3 with the Mandarin and Extremis story line. very nice.

Than Marvel studios releases Thor 2 which looks totally awesome

Then Cap 2 and Guardians. all right !
bbarber2323 - 1/20/2013, 2:14 PM
Someone please tell me how this guy is alive in the modern day as well as Bucky?? I don't know much about Cap.
daftendirekt9 - 1/20/2013, 2:19 PM
It's probably just going to be a flashback to show how The Winter Soldier was created, but either way it's still pretty cool
IronLantern79 - 1/20/2013, 2:21 PM
Another comic book movie I can't wait for. This just sweetens deal.

Super12 - 1/20/2013, 2:23 PM
This movie's starting to feel a little cramped...

I hope he's only in flashbacks, that would make sense. If Zemo is in this then they shouldn't put Zola in his suit until maybe the post credits teaser
bbarber2323 - 1/20/2013, 2:33 PM
So I'm reading wiki about all these characters. I'm curious how Marvels gonna do this. Like the Falcon. He got his link to Redwing from the Red Skull. So is this Sam Wilson going to be a modern day SHIELD agent that meets Cap?
TheGambitFreak - 1/20/2013, 2:33 PM
@bbarber2323 Bucky, well, in the MCU, loses his grasp from the railing of the train and falls into the river, in which it freezes, preserving his body to be found decades later. In the comics, essentially the same thing happens, but we know what happens... His right arm is useless and the Soviet Union recovers his body and replaces his arm with a bio-mechanical limb. As well as brain-washing his ass.

Zola however cloned himself to an android, that is how he survived all this time. I believe he received documents from his ancestors that had formulas to advanced technology that showed him how to do so. He was the first biological clone.
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 2:35 PM

Zola is in a robot body. Bucky was frozen, and received an experimental serum from Zola in the first movie similar to Cap's.
Luminus - 1/20/2013, 2:37 PM

Funsize - 1/20/2013, 2:39 PM
OMG awesome!!! I wonder how they're going to do that though.
TayDee - 1/20/2013, 2:41 PM
99.9% sure, the movie Zola we will see will stay in human form. They may also introduce AIM.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/20/2013, 2:42 PM
AIM is going to appear in IM3.
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 2:45 PM

How? He'll be over 100 years old! Robot form ftw!
Also, AIM will already have been introduced in Iron Man 3.
kemuael - 1/20/2013, 3:06 PM
arnim zola robot form FOR THE WIN!!!
MisterMagurlypse - 1/20/2013, 3:06 PM
Cool news!
nowtheresaBATman - 1/20/2013, 3:15 PM
@AcidicHeart that drawing of Madame Hydra looks like Eva Green :)
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 3:18 PM

She might make a good Madame Hydra. The design from the Captain America game was the best Madame Hydra design I've ever seen. The only thing missing was green lipstick.
r0njeremy - 1/20/2013, 3:19 PM
DrDoom - 1/20/2013, 3:24 PM
Baron Nemo?
