Drew Pearce Shares Thoughts On Marvel's Phase Two, Fox's And WB/DC's Shared Universes

Drew Pearce Shares Thoughts On Marvel's Phase Two, Fox's And WB/DC's Shared Universes

Notably praising Captain America: The Winter Soldier based on rumblings "from the editing room," Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce offers up thoughts on Marvel's rivals' shared universes.

As the co-writer behind Shane Black's first installment to Marvel Studios' second wave of movies, Iron Man 3, Drew Pearce also talked with SciFiNow about the forthcoming Phase Two ventures. After recounting on Marvel's "roll of the dice" success with the first Iron Man film, Pearce says, "This next phase has such a good bunch of directors, from the Russos, who by all accounts have knocked it out the park with Captain America 2 - I've seldom heard buzz from the editing room as good as that movie. Avengers 2 will be Joss Whedon's baby, and reaction to James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has been brilliant. Even after the tough journey of two and half years making Iron Man 3 as good as it can be, I don't just have respect for Marvel as unit; I'm honored for my time there, and I'm constantly talking to them about what we do next."

Of course, no one can argue that Marvel Studios has changed the game for every major superhero movie/franchise, and that success has considerably inspired its rival studios, Fox and Warner Bros., to start establishing their own crossover/shared universes in the coming years. "There's a lot of talk about whether Warner are following the Marvel model," Pearce continues. "But I think they're just following the Dark Knight model and using to branch out, character by character. It's a smart move that they're not trying to do Justice League and they're going to bring Batman and Superman together their next movie instead. I think DC are still doing their thing, I don't think it's particularly derivative of Marvel." The British writer then weighs in, "There's definitely more of a sense of 'Marvel Studios did this well, maybe we should take care to join up our part of the the Marvel universe' at Fox. It's trickier because they're not coming from as clear a place as Marvel was, because they already have a bunch of continuity issues, though I'm sure X-Men: Days of Future Past is going to clean that up. I'm sure in Fantastic Four there will be a sense that it's the same world as the mutants exist in." What do you think?

he does bring up some good points imo, on his making iron man 3 as good as it can be , thats where the backlash and butthurt fanboys are gonna whine saying you made it shit, hopefully what he says of the other marvel studios films comes true when we see them, people need to understand these films are expensive as hell to make and we should atleast appreciate the effort that goes in them
MrCBM56 - 8/31/2013, 2:06 PM
I don't understand the point of having Fantastic Four and X-Men in the same universe. I feel they're doing it just because they can. I don't want to have Fantastic Four be a Easter egg hunt just to have fans realize they are in the same continuity and universe. Really pointless IMO.
Jollem - 8/31/2013, 2:09 PM
"Of course, no one can argue that Marvel Studios has changed the game for superhero movies everywhere"

eh, that's debatable
ezio619 - 8/31/2013, 2:11 PM
i am fine with x men being in its own continuity, they just need to fix up the continuity issues, stop focusing on wolverine so dang much and focus on some of the others, maybe nightcrawler who is my favorite xmen and embarce more of its comic bookyness and its will be fine, i never really got in the 616 universe why people would praise someone like thor who is a god and hate mutants even though they have powers too, it fits in te movieverse because they are the only ones with them
Jollem - 8/31/2013, 2:12 PM
x-men and fantastic four. just need spidey in there

although, any one of those 3 have a wealth that they can be just great on their own
ezio619 - 8/31/2013, 2:13 PM
Blackjack- i think marvel want to keep things fresh and exciting like a arc being written by a new writer, i thought you liked im3, maybe i was wrong?
LEVITIKUZ - 8/31/2013, 2:15 PM
I feel with DC, they should make their CBMs more serious than how Marvel has. Which is fine so DC's films don't like the same as Marvel. Having a Batman/Superman film is better than having a Batman Reboot or no Batman solo film before Justice League and both are dumb ideas.

Fox is [frick]ed I feel. Honestly I could care less about Fantastic Four. If Marvel Studios gets them back, that's big for them. For a movie that's suppose to come out before Avengers 2 and Superman/Batman, we know nothing about. No casting, no official title, no logo, no villain, nothing.

It's best to give Fantastic Four back to Marvel Studios.

Also shut up Trollem
ezio619 - 8/31/2013, 2:15 PM
i think its fine by doing references to their connected universe, i view the movies of the individual characters as their solo title, other characters appear very little in the characters own books and they are mostly standalone so im fine with that and plus its expensive to have other actors appear in anothers film so from a business standpoint, its not a good idea
ezio619 - 8/31/2013, 2:17 PM
i want fox to have the x men franchise and just fix it up and sony to keep the the spiderman franchise
CaptainObvious - 8/31/2013, 2:26 PM
@Jollem= Yes, they did. The reason Fox is connecting their X-Men movies and WB is bringing Superman and Batman together is because of the success Marvel has had with their shared universe. Marvel has changed the game.

Anyway, I don't see a point in bringing the Fantastic Four and the X-Men together. I like the FF, but what unique connections do these two teams have? The X-Men are big enough on their own. They don't need other superheroes.

Marvel did for CBMs what the WU did for Rap, they flipped the script

@levi - i don't understand why you have to act like such a shitty little brat
fullmoonfx - 8/31/2013, 2:34 PM
I'm done with wolverine and xmen movies. Let them rest for a bit then reboot possibly in the MCU.
Jollem - 8/31/2013, 2:34 PM
@CaptainObvious - that may be true, but the quote makes it seem like "solo then team" affects everything, which it does not. not everything
Omarvls - 8/31/2013, 2:35 PM
I know it is hard for DC ONLY fan boys to admit but
Marvel took it to another level that EVERYONE is following

Which is a good thing
NovaCorpsFan - 8/31/2013, 2:35 PM

You tell that rusty robot! Levi, in fairness, I've grown to be ambivolent towards you. One minute (in chat) you're a good guy. Then others (in comments) you're a twat.
TheWolverine08 - 8/31/2013, 2:36 PM
@MAC True, true.
TheWolverine08 - 8/31/2013, 2:36 PM
I like cookies!
ezio619 - 8/31/2013, 2:37 PM
Blackjack-iron man 3 had one scene of slapstick humor while the others came though banter and the tone isnt jarring for me, i rewatched it and actually it has plenty of serious moments, its just that he kid sequence and trevor sequence are not that far apart that the humor feels too much and Ant Man has been quiet cause thats the first one in phase three and the farthest away
NovaCorpsFan - 8/31/2013, 2:37 PM
Cookies are better when dunked in tea.
Jollem - 8/31/2013, 2:38 PM
if anything, x-men and spider-man and batman and whatnot changed things. as far as "shared universes", i suppose. although, i have seen many team movies before the avengers. (put yer pop-guns away, i liked the avengers)
Hellboy6666 - 8/31/2013, 2:39 PM
Bad thing he had nothing to say of Thor the dark world? I hope Thor is awesome. I loved Iron Man 3 despite it's so called flaws and I hope there are no flawed phase 2 films.

LEVITIKUZ - 8/31/2013, 2:41 PM

Yes I'm a bratty little shit. From the guy who bitches about every Marvel Studios film....

I did an article about Twinkies once.
Omarvls - 8/31/2013, 2:41 PM
I know that from reading what you say
But their is some who believe just cause DC/WB is FINALLY doing something like Batman vs Superman that makes everything that Marvel has accomplished void

and I'm with you I've said thet GotG can be Star Wars or Space Balls
It's a big gamble for Marvel
NovaCorpsFan - 8/31/2013, 2:43 PM
Okay, what if the mug was huge, very little water say 5%, 25% tea then 75% milk? It'd taste horrible but think of the cookiedunkin'!
LEVITIKUZ - 8/31/2013, 2:43 PM

A twat? A twat?

I don't know if I should feel insulted or not. Mainly because I've never been called a twat and don't know what it means.
NovaCorpsFan - 8/31/2013, 2:44 PM
GotG will combine the tone of SW with Space Balls. Imagine that but with a raccoon...
NovaCorpsFan - 8/31/2013, 2:45 PM
A twat is brit slang for vagina.
TheWolverine08 - 8/31/2013, 2:46 PM
You're from Britain @MAC?
marvel72 - 8/31/2013, 2:47 PM
i'd f*ckin love it if marvel studios got the fantastic four rights back. fantastic four, anihilus,dr.doom, super skrull, galactus & the silver surfer all back at the house of mouse.

@ jollem

marvel studios has inspired others to create cinematic universes, without them you wouldn't be getting your precious batman/superman team up.

so yes marvel studios is the game changer in the comic book genre.

the avengers highest grossing movie of 2012
iron man 3 highest grossing movie of 2013(thus far)
LEVITIKUZ - 8/31/2013, 2:47 PM

Well when I get my hands on Nova....

Oh look halftime's over, Football's back on.

MrCBM56 - 8/31/2013, 2:47 PM
