RUMOR: Vincent D'onofrio in Negotiations to Join Captain America

RUMOR: Vincent D'onofrio in Negotiations to Join Captain America

Has the Law & Order actor been approached to appear in Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger? Find out the details after the jump...

It appears director Joe Johnston is following through with his promise to surround Captain America leading man Chris Evans with well-established actors. So far, Marvel Studios has signed Hugo Weaving to portray the villainous Red Skull, Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, Tommy Lee Jones as Gen. Chester Philips, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola and Neal McDonough as 'Dum Dum' Dugan.

Today I received word from a reliable source (the same person who supplied me with the confirmed Captain America & Thor movie logos) that actor Vincent D'onofrio is in negotiations to join the Star Spangled Avenger movie cast as well. Supposedly he will portray either one of Nick Fury's Howling Commandos or a member of the super-team The Invaders. There is no word yet on which character he is being pursued for, but it appears that both teams, the Commandos and Invaders, are being combined into one for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

D'onofrio is very much remembered for his portrayal of Private 'Pyle' in the Vietnam war drama Full Metal Jacket as well as the cult favorite character Dawson a.k.a. Thor in Adventures in Babysitting. He is currently the star of the critically acclaimed TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Seems like D'onofrio would make a better Dum Dum.
tazmaniak - 6/14/2010, 8:10 AM
Neal McDonough and now maybe D'onofrio? These are gonna be some old Commandos!
Vafrous - 6/14/2010, 8:15 AM
He's either playing a YOUNG WOLVERINE(joking =) !!!!) or henchman #1 or scientist#6...
Nick Fury------ P-l
MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 8:16 AM
I am stumped as to who he would play. He is kinda old and out of shape. I'd cast him as a Nazi scientist instead of a commando.
MikeZ - 6/14/2010, 8:24 AM
He could be Izzy Cohen
XmutantX - 6/14/2010, 8:29 AM
my fav outta all the L&O shows...his brain blows me away! :)
MaryJane@ how do u make ur boobs so shiney?....hey its a fair question :P
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 8:33 AM
i now who he is i'm a huge law & order fan only probelm i would say is if u look from his first episode the very last episode guy is rally fat lol a fat italian so for him to be beliviable that hes in the military he would have to get back in shape but nuthin the less hes proberly one of the best actors i ever seen so if he did get in shape he would be a great asset to the movie
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 8:36 AM
I cant imagine him being one of the Invaders but a Howling Commando sure makes sense! I wish we had some more information about how that's all going to work...will Fury be in WWII? Will Dum Dum be only in WWII or the present as well? If so, how will that work!? If they dont get the involvement of all these different characters right we could end up with an X-Men Origins: Wolverine style mess on our hands! ;(

Anyway, great scoop MULTI - I like that photo manip you found. I could definitely see a costume like that working in The Avengers!
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 8:36 AM
you now it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a young wolverine in it lol i mean if marvel got back the rights and was goin to reboot wolverine it would be good way to do a teaser since wolverine fault along side captain america on couple missions in WWII
Weeton - 6/14/2010, 8:39 AM
D is the man
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 8:41 AM
ur right JoshW the wolverine movies are a mess not the same wolverine i rember from the comics growing up and when i see him in the newer comics as i call wolverine is suppose to be a short scrappy guy not a a tall model like guy lol they should have made the other actors around hugh jackman seem taller to to give to the illusion to wolverines shortness, but i don't blame hugh jackman hes totaly dedicated to wolverine i'm pretty sure when he reads a script in the back of his mind he thinks o'boy the fans aint goin to like this. i now he read wolverine comics to prepare for the role, i blame the studio interfuence, directors and writers lack of comic book knowledge :P
Vafrous - 6/14/2010, 8:41 AM
He looks like a fat Michael Keaton ...
MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 8:44 AM
This movie really is developing an extremely talented supporting cast.

@JoshW - Ditto. I hope it doesn't get to crowded and I would someone PLEASE explain the Nick Fury continuity?
mindform - 6/14/2010, 8:44 AM
Well, I like the idea. Let's see how that goes :')
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 8:45 AM
@ multipurposeponi
yeah your right lol on law & order they had him where super tight dress shirts and suit gave me the impression that he was bigger then he was lol i still say he one hell of a actor ;)

was thinkin the same thing about the top pic is that hugh jackman standin next to him
ManThing - 6/14/2010, 8:50 AM
I just have one thing to say and that is that I just love that manip in the first comment.

OMG that's perfect. If only the movie version was a bit more like that. Not a lot, but a bit.
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 8:53 AM
MULTI: Yeah, good point - I'm sure that they could do it but it would really depend on the sort of material they use and even then it could still end up looking pretty bad.

As I've said before, this is the present day costume I'm hoping for, which is near enough identical to what you posted above but it's the mask design more than anything else that I like about it...

(Minus the scales of course, lol!) :P
ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 8:54 AM
He is an awesome actor.....don't know who he could play. Remember the Howling commandos were older guys they were already seasoned soldiers.

@ MJW.....nice breast......I mean comments
XmutantX - 6/14/2010, 8:57 AM
I kno on start up sitcoms they tend 2 surrond the main star who has lil 2 no acting experience wit good actors...this seems 2 be the case wit this movie..which tells me 2, that there confidence in evans as a stand alone star in this movie is somewhat shakey...and 2 that they r trying 2 deliver the best movie i hav hope...evans may not be an amazing cap...but it will be an amazing over all movie :)
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 8:57 AM
just wonder if they are goin to make captain americas costume more moderen when he gets to the present day in the avengers or are they goin to keep the WWII version
crazyray - 6/14/2010, 8:58 AM
you foolish fools.... @MJW- that is not her/his real photo.
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 9:04 AM
The more I think about it, the more I wish that neither the Invaders or Howling Commandos were being included in The First Avenger!! A crazy thing to say as a comic book fan I know, but I'd feel much happier if I knew that the movie was focusing on Captain America, Bucky and the Red Skull rather than a whole bunch of other characters too!

Iron Man 2 only just managed to pull off including a pile of new characters like Black Widow, War Machine, Nick Fury, Whiplash and Justin Hammer but after watching the movie again recently and reading a lot of fairly average reviews, it's clear they didnt do that good a job of balancing them all! It's too early to say the same will happen with Cap's movie but it'll all come down to whether they can establish the bigger characters for future movies while still doing the minor ones justice!
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 9:04 AM
it may not be her or his photo but still thats what mary jane watson should look like ;)
ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 9:07 AM
@ tea: lol

@ Crazy: my nice breast statement still stands
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 9:08 AM
true but we don't know how big of a presence the other characters have in the move yet they could only be in it for 30min's and when it comes out we might think it was a bad idea or the best idea they ever had only time will tell :) but you now its better that marvel is at the helm then fox or it could be another wolverine or spider-man 3 or fantastic four i could go on and on :P
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 9:09 AM
Wait a minute - you mean that MaryJaneWatson isnt really lying on a bed somewhere with her awesome looking cleavage spilling out of her top!? NOOOOOO!!!!!

ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 9:12 AM
@ JoshW's pic post: I'll take my chances ;)
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 9:14 AM
TheSentry: Good point! I dread to think just how awful this movie would be if Fox was anywhere near it! I have faith that Marvel Studios will do this right but I just hope that they focus on the big three regardless of how many or how long the other characters will be included for...

Captain America who needs to be established both for The Avengers and his own solo movies - after all, if this isnt a success, he wont get any more of them.

Bucky who should have enough time spent on him and his death to allow the Winter Soldier storyline in the future.

Red Skull who they need to make into a great villain that can be brought back along with the brilliant Hugo Weaving.
ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 9:18 AM
Actually the Other Percent would be shared with this.

MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 9:19 AM
@JoshW - It could be that every supporting character is a reference to an actual comic book character, but they don't get a lot of screen time. Cap, Bucky, and two or three Howling Commandos of consequence could make a good main cast. The Invaders may be a bit much...
JoshWilding - 6/14/2010, 9:26 AM
tea: LMAO!!! :D Ah well, that's nothing that cant be fixed now is it?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

MassExecutions: Yeah, that could definitely work. Having Cap and Bucky leading a small team of Invaders and Howling Commandos would actually be pretty great I think! I just wish we knew which Invaders we'll see...personally, I'm hoping for Union Jack and Spitfire. Namor, the Human Torch and Toro would all be great but that leads to my above point as that many characters (especially superpowered ones) would make things too crowded!
canadianturd - 6/14/2010, 9:31 AM
Does anybody remember Nick Fury taking the Infinity Serum?? That's why he looks the same from WWII and the present. I thought if they went with a younger Nick Fury, it'd be cool to use Michael Jai White because he looks like a younger Samuel L. Jackson.
Shaman - 6/14/2010, 9:32 AM
Wow this is actually good news!

So the old Thor will be in the new Captain America... huh!

ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 9:32 AM
i just want one fire guy and Namor
ecksmanfan - 6/14/2010, 9:34 AM
Nice addition to the cast! He's an amazing actor!
ThaMessenger07 - 6/14/2010, 9:34 AM
I have heard rumors that Michael Jai White is playing Isaiah Bradley.....just a Rumor
MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 9:40 AM
@Keven - I bet your right on Nick Fury. If you do the make up right Samuel L. Jackson looks like a young Samuel L. Jackson.

@JoshW - I'm thinking no (or few) super-powered invaders. Each one requires more of a suspension of disbelief from the audience and would make Cap stand out less. Union Jack is exactly the kind of character I would go with.
TheSentry - 6/14/2010, 9:46 AM
before we worry about captain america being a sucess should we draw attensions to the thor movie first lol since thats the next one out of the gate and my guess is at the comic con we will see a thor teaser and the cast of captain america cast will be there also answering qustions :)
ManThing - 6/14/2010, 9:48 AM
People: I have a question and I am told that you guys might have the answer to it.

Why didn't they use the word "Vibranium" in Iron Man 2??
canadianturd - 6/14/2010, 9:50 AM
I could see Vincent D'Onofrio as one of the following:
Sam "Happy" Sawyer
Jim Hammond
Blazing Skull
