Steven Soderbergh Recalls Vouching For The Russo Bros. To Direct CAPTAIN AMERICA Sequel

The Side Effects director shares his thoughts on the comic book movie genre, stating that he isn't "a comic book guy". However, he then reveals that he endorsed the Russo Brothers to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Speaking with Collider, director Steven Soderbergh (who recently helmed Haywire, Magic Mike, and the upcoming Side Effects) shares his thoughts on the comic book movie genre. Yesterday, we heard actor Jude Law express interest in appearing in a CBM, but Soderbergh doesn't sound near as interested. However, he did endorse brothers Joe and Anthony Russo when they were pursuing Marvel Studios' upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, saying that the Community directing duo were seeking the job for the right reasons and that he wasn't the right guy for such a gig. "I just wasn’t a comic book guy. When the Russos were going after the Captain America sequel, they called me and said, 'Will you call Marvel and talk to them about us?' because I have a relationship with them. I said, 'Tell me why you want to do this.' And they go, 'Because we have a $60,000 comic book collection, because we’re obsessed with this shit.' And I went, 'Okay, I’m just checking.' Because I’m not, that’s why I can’t do one, but I didn’t know that and I just wanted to make sure that they were going after it for the right reasons as it turned out they were and they ended up getting the job and they’ll do a great job because they love it, and I’m just not the guy." What do you think of Soderbergh's comments? Feel free to share your thoughts below. For Collider's full interview, click the source link below.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Scarlett Johansson, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is slated for an April 4th, 2014 release, but with recent rumors of the production start date being pushed to this June, it's possible that the release date will change.

Its best to get a director that would actually care about doing one as opposed to someone who doesnt give a shit about the source material. Oh well, good riddance.
Happy11 - 2/8/2013, 6:13 AM
It shows Soderbergh isn't in it for the money but for the process of making movies and he didn't have to endorse the Russo bros to marvel so big respect.
Pharaoh - 2/8/2013, 6:20 AM
gotta give him props for his reasons for saying no alot of cats would of done it just for a pay day. The Winter soldier stories good I could see it translating to film really well if approached right.

Curious whether it'll tie to Avengers n how, in the Winter Soldier they're tracking some alien tech a cube I think it was so maybe they'll be tracking something left behind by the Chitari. In the book Stark cameos to help track it which would of been a cool cameo doubt it'll happen though but given Ruffalo isn't gonna make an appearance until Avengers 2 earliest that we know of and Banner is as intelligent as Stark it would be nice if they cameo'd him instead

bit risky since 100% people would bitch if all they got was Banner n no HULK in sight
shamo - 2/8/2013, 6:25 AM
still have zero faith in them but honestly, it can't be in worse then the last Cap movie.
CharlesLord - 2/8/2013, 6:27 AM
i never understood why people were worried about the russos. I remember them saying before they were big fans of CA. Id rather have someone at the helm who cares about the source material. Even tho this isnt their "type" of film according to their resume, theyll still find a way to make it work based on the fact that theyre fans
GuardianAngel - 2/8/2013, 6:30 AM
This guy has to change his name.

CoulsonLives - 2/8/2013, 6:51 AM
Can we ban jCameron yet? He's basically saying the same thing, article after article, obvious troll. Back to the topic, I never doubted the Russos.
CoulsonLives - 2/8/2013, 7:00 AM
One who picks lamer stupid movies over Iron Man, Cap and Thor needs to get his brain checked. The man said Green Lantern was better than Cap. GREEN LANTERN!!!!
FrenzyFreak - 2/8/2013, 7:13 AM
@shamo my god go away your comments are horseshit. A CBM that gets a 79 on RT is definenty a good movie. And there's no reason you shouldn't have hope in them.
Grimfoe - 2/8/2013, 7:27 AM
yeah, I don't get the hate. I've been a Cap fan for 35 years. The movie wasn't perfect, but it was very good. Some fans just don't like Cap. Doesn't make it a bad movie. Just one you don't like. Other fans are still upset that WB continues to produce crappy movies even though their characters are MUCH better know and more popular.

Marvel is doing pretty well, in my opinion, translating the source material to a new medium and treating the material with respect. WB doesn't treat the material or the fans with any respect.
Grimfoe - 2/8/2013, 7:28 AM
*known. Sorry for the typos.
ATrueHero1987 - 2/8/2013, 7:34 AM
@jCameron For someone who doesn't like most of the Marvel movies, you sure do talk about them ALL the time. :)
Ninjapimp - 2/8/2013, 7:51 AM
i cant think of a film the Russo have made?
shamo - 2/8/2013, 8:00 AM
@avengers52 Cap was horrible. one of the worst CBMs to date. if someone feels differently, then they just feel differently.

as for why i have no faith in the Russo Bros. my question is, why should i? in fact; lemme take a line from your book. their last movie was You, Me and Depree. it has a 20 on RT.

so that means their definitely bad directors does it not? which means their definitely bad choices, does it not?
FrenzyFreak - 2/8/2013, 8:06 AM
Of course your aloud to feel differently, but don't go on a marvel page as a nolanite and try pissing off people and getting attention. And as for the Russo Brothers, you can't judge directors based on one movie they made in a whole completely different genre. It's one thing if you don't have faith in a director that only makes shit movies in the related genre, such as Michael Bay. Obviously Marvel chose them for a reason.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 2/8/2013, 8:17 AM
in marvel i trust, i'm saving my virginity for marvel. one day, one day.

marvel movies rule

Bam - 2/8/2013, 8:23 AM
People shouldn't have to worry about things like this especially if you've seen community you know these guys can not only handle multiple genres but also a wide expanse of characters and mythology, the fact that they're so passionate about Marvel character's from being fans in the first place is just a bonus.

"Can't handle big budget stuff" was thrown around alot when news broke, but neither did Favreau or Branagh have any experience with that either, knowing your story and character is the most important thing to a director then they go to the vfx guys and go we need to make *awesome thing happen* in this scene and thats when Marvel's team do their thing.

It's in the bag folks relax

PS Soderbergh is AWESOME.
sameoldthing - 2/8/2013, 8:28 AM
This guy could direct a great comic book film..he just does not want to.
Moving On....
NovaCorpsFan - 2/8/2013, 8:30 AM
60.000 dollar collection, thats so AMAZEBALLS!
capcyclopsftw - 2/8/2013, 9:20 AM
I have complete faith in Marvel and the Russo Bros. just from Community alone, that's a show for geeks made by geeks. Unlike that shit show The Big Bang theory, which is a show written by ass holes that think that's how nerds and geeks are.

People also don't like Cap because he doesn't have Super Super powers, but that's why he's the greatest character. He doesn't need that shit to command a god and tame a beast.
sexfoodcomics - 2/8/2013, 9:43 AM
Honestly I can careless about getting a director that's "obsessed" with comics. Was Jon Favrueo obssesed with comics? Is Chris Nolan obsessed with comics? Kenneth Branagh? Alan Taylor? No they weren't they just love tell stories about interesting characters. That's all that matters.
CapemA - 2/8/2013, 9:58 AM
The Russo's will be fine. Haters gonna hate and trolls will be trolls. The Russo's not only convinced Marvel, they convinced an Academy Award Winning Director about their vision. Until the movies comes out and we can intelligently form an opinion, PISS OFF TROLLS!!
ThePowerCosmic - 2/8/2013, 10:56 AM
Jcameron and shamo have the worst opinions. All of Marvels films are awesome. Best CBMs ever by far.
TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - 2/8/2013, 11:00 AM
Anybody who doesn't like Cap 1 is because you obviously have a problem with it being a time / period piece, I can see most people not enjoying it for the period it was set in, but at the end of the day, it's an ORIGIN story, so had to be done to introduce the character to the masses & general audience that DON'T READ COMICS. But also, at the same time, it was also to launch him into modern day quickly enough to get him to the Avengers.

I thought it was rather good for what it was & the time it was set in & if Hugo Weaving wasn't gonna be such a Dick about playing Red Skull again, Cap vs. Red Skull in modern times & a modern setting would be awesome.

I however enjoyed what we got in Cap 1 & it's most definitely better than Green Lantern, Haywire & Magic Mike, their was no story what so ever to that film at all & was just randomness thrown together! Kevin Nash was ace though & Mcconaughey gave a funny & enjoyable performance but that was it. And to think Green Lantern is better than Cap 1, yeah right, I want some of what Soderbergh has, is & was smoking! Must be super strong Shit!

If they have a scene of Cap lifting Thor's Hammer at some point or having to Battle Thanos alone when all other heroes are fallen, those two scenes alone will solidify Cap as one of the major heroes to general audiences / non comic book readers.
marvel72 - 2/8/2013, 11:06 AM
the russo's do concern me a bit but if i'm proven wrong so be it i'll quite happily except it.
DaenerysTargaryen - 2/8/2013, 1:09 PM
I still dont trust the Russos. I mean almost every Marvel phase 2 director choice makes sense...but them.

Thor 2 director: Did Game of Thrones...nuff said
GOTG director: He's insane, done some sci-fi work, and has Whedon connections
Ant man director: Fanboy director and....yeah he's awesome
Cap 2 directors: Uhhh....they did some comedy? IDK
RamonSuarez - 2/8/2013, 1:10 PM
Whenever someone with a Bane avatar tells me that Captain America: The First Avenger was one of the worse CBMs "ever" I know their opinion means next to shit. CATFA isn't even in the bottom ten of horrible comic movies produced if you just looked at DC-Warner alone. Jonah Hex, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Constantine, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Superman 3, Superman 4, Green Lantern, Superman Returns, and Steel were all worse. I am not even counting Marvel duds like Elektra or Punisher Warzone into the mix either.
ATrueHero1987 - 2/8/2013, 1:22 PM
@RamonSuarez-lol! Get em! Where you been at man?
capcyclopsftw - 2/8/2013, 1:31 PM

Your own logic for Ant-Man director applies to the Russo Bros.

They are serious Fanboys!
capcyclopsftw - 2/8/2013, 1:37 PM
Anybody doubting the Russo Brothers needs to watch Community, and the way they balance a big cast with some of the best writing available.

Also watch Welcome to Collinwood. Another great ensemble movie, just ask Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, and George [frick]ing Clooney.
capcyclopsftw - 2/8/2013, 1:39 PM
But I know some of you "fanboys" just looooove to make your own conclusions based off your little amount of knowledge.
EarOne - 2/8/2013, 8:04 PM
hey obsessing over and collecting comics don't guarantee nothin'. let's just hope for the best.
Canon38 - 2/8/2013, 10:18 PM
Russo Brothers makes me a bit nervous for cap sequel.
mgeoff88 - 2/8/2013, 11:54 PM
Reading that makes me feel better about the Russo brothers helming CA:TWS.

When directors love the source material, you're in for a great CBM.
stutx - 2/9/2013, 12:25 AM
so glad to see ppls love for community to supply faith for Cap 2. been thinking the same since i heard they got the nod. Anyone with any doubts needs to watch the show. Never have i seen a show with such different themes all revolving around a great strong cast.
dnno1 - 2/9/2013, 7:51 AM
I guess Steven Soderbergh won't be doing Justice League.
this movie iis gonna suck
