COMICS: First Look At Jim Lee's DETECTIVE COMICS #27 Variant

Kicking off the 75th anniversary of a certain Dark Knight, this month's massive Detective issue boasts an all-star roster. Read on for another great variant, this time by DC co-publisher Jim Lee.

To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Batman, Detective Comics #27 will be a 100+ page spectacular featuring the likes of Scott Snyder, Frank Miller, John Layman, Paul Dini, Bryan Hitch, Jason Fabok, Neal Adams and Dustin Nguyen. Several variants have been revealed for the issue, and CBR has revealed the latest one by Jim Lee, harking back to the Caped Crusader's very first comic appearance. The issue hits shelves on January 8.

Did Bats steal Wolvie's cowl?
Nick56 - 1/1/2014, 2:26 PM
Ears looks a little odd but other than that it looks good
staypuffed - 1/1/2014, 2:30 PM
I'm pretty sure he's trying to get the feel of Batman's cowl from the original Detective #27 with the more - ahem - "realistic" bat ears. But it does look a bit odd.
Nomis - 1/1/2014, 2:30 PM
Okay, kids.. the long ears on the mask (and gun) is a tribute Batman in the Golden age as well as the( pre-Crisis)costume that Thomas Wayne wore.

@ trudy - ;)

marvel72 - 1/1/2014, 2:46 PM
nice cover but batman with a gun?
staypuffed - 1/1/2014, 2:56 PM
He used guns in his very early appearances, inspired by the likes of the Shadow and other vigilantes of the 20s and 30s.

That is a sexy cover and I like that he has gone for his classic look for it, fire arm and all.
Nomis - 1/1/2014, 4:19 PM
@ marvel72 - check it out.

Ever since the start of the New 52 Batman's been a brilliant read, the artwork on everything looks amazing.
BANE5000 - 1/1/2014, 4:39 PM
Are they bringing back the Amalgam Dark Claw comics from the 90s again? :D
Hellsboy - 1/1/2014, 4:43 PM
Cool throwback love lee's work
TheGreenBastard - 1/1/2014, 5:19 PM
That's an awesome cover.
TheGreenBastard - 1/1/2014, 5:31 PM
I love how the ears look like actual bat ears.

Some bat-fans you are
AshleyWilliams - 1/1/2014, 7:49 PM
Look, I prefer the Bob Kane look. It's the only costume I use on Arkham Origins.

But this is way off. The ears look ridiculous and the symbol is not accurate to the times.

THAT BEING SAID, it's still a beautiful piece of artwork and I will very much enjoy reading it.
Fastestmanalive - 1/1/2014, 8:10 PM
Awesome cover.

I love these throwback costumes drawn in a modern art.
mgeoff88 - 1/1/2014, 9:12 PM
That's a fantastic cover! A nice throwback to old school Batman.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 1/1/2014, 9:18 PM

Once again Jim Lee shows us why he is still on top of his game!Old school Batman never looked better!
jlabatman - 1/1/2014, 10:06 PM
While not a big fan of the ears, even though it is a throwback look, Jim Lee is still the man and one of the best artists to ever draw Batman!
staypuffed - 1/1/2014, 10:29 PM
He's one of the best artists to ever draw comics. Period.
loki668 - 1/1/2014, 10:29 PM
Somewhere, Wolverine is holding a cowl with tiny, little, bat ears.
Space - 1/1/2014, 10:37 PM
Wow! Very nice, can't wait!
jlabatman - 1/1/2014, 10:39 PM
@staypuffed agreed 100%!
KIDDSOUL - 1/1/2014, 11:16 PM
Like the classic look of the ears. Now if only if there was a counterbalance of Batman looking a little more scary, the first appearance version and a bit of Jim Lee Hush influence...
unknownfacts - 1/2/2014, 1:23 AM
Really can't believe some people didn't get the reference to the original appearance of the Batman.Nice art work though.
SimpleeComplex - 1/2/2014, 2:57 AM
Jim Lee- my all time fave artist.
VictorHugo - 1/2/2014, 3:07 AM
Loved that page when Batman meets the Shadow, i guess i never saw this happening before.
MightyZeus - 1/2/2014, 3:30 AM
I can not believe that people did not know that Batman used a gun in the early comics. I like the cover though it is a throw back to the golden age of comics.
Nytwng77043 - 1/2/2014, 3:30 AM
$8.00!?! Whatever happened to "Drawing the Line at $2.99? It better be 100 pages. Seems like month after month, they find some kind of gimmick to get more money. Glad this isn't one of my regular books.

If it weren't for the fact Jim Lee is involved, I wouldn't consider it.

I'm gonna have to drop some bookss if this keeps up. They've already stopped two of my titles, and will discontinue Batman The Dark Knight and Talon in March.
Nytwng77043 - 1/2/2014, 3:31 AM
Half of it is probably ads.
DrunkenNukem - 1/2/2014, 3:59 AM

Dedpool - 1/2/2014, 7:17 AM

thatcoldblackcloud - 1/2/2014, 7:17 AM
