COMICS: Major Changes To Mr. Freeze In "The New 52" Revealed

DC's controversial New 52 initiative has gained a lot of flack for its radical character changes, but what's new for one of Batman's most popular foes, Mr Freeze? Read on to find out... (Beware, there are spoilers ahead!)

In DC's Batman Annual #1, released today, Mr. Freeze has had two major revisions to his back story. The first is that instead of Heartless Gothcorp CEO Ferris Boyle shutting down Fries' operation it is none other than Millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne! The second is surely the most controversial and shocking. It is revealed that Nora Fries is....

...actually not even Freeze's wife! it was revealed that Dr Fries is even more psychotic than before, murdering his mother in a frozen pond years after she was left mentally scarred after almost dying in the same frozen pond Freeze pushed her in years later. After that he was even more obsessed with ice and while working at the cryogenics division at Wayne Enterprises he found a woman named Nora who had been frozen since the 60s. This is only the abridged version of the story and I do implore you to go out and buy this annual. Although it is near sacrilege to some it is so well written it seems like the perfect fit for the character. What do you think of these changes? Sound off in the comments below.

Not to be a grammar Nazi but the headline is a bit misleading.

There we go, it's fixed. Just need to wait for CBM to update it.

That sounds even more interesting than his previous backstory...

not sure how i feel about this the issue it self was OK but the whole thing with his wife made him one of the most multi dimensional villains in Batman's rogue gallery it made him stand out from rest of the psycho's, especially the movie no not Schumachers but the animated movie Sub-Zero I believe it was called did a greeat job of portraying the chracter

Heart of Ice will always be classic, guys, but this new version sounds pretty good, to be honest. And Heart of Ice wasn't exactly faithful to the comics, it did it's own shit, making him more of a sympathetic character. But this promises to be just as interesting, by making him a stone-cold psycho. Besides they kept the makority of the story, including the name Nora.
Having said that, I wasn't too keen on the new HarleyQuinn origin in Suicide Squad.

I just finished reading the issue, and I've got to say, it really is very well-written. The twist about his origin was especially shocking. I'm still not too sure how I feel about this change (Mr. Freeze with the original Nora story was one of my top five favorite Batman villains), but the issue as a whole was really great. The characterization of Freeze was fantastic, but I think it'll take a while for this change to fully sink in.

it actually makes me like him a lil more. it was cool that he was trying to regain lost love. but as far as rogues go it made him likable in a "pity" sense. this? makes him look insane and less relate-able and more fiendish

Mr. Freeze is amongst my favorite villains.

I prefer the tragic version.

Mr. Freeze needs to be next villain in future batman films. The character deserves more than Big Arnie´s mediocre performance.

Ed Harris or John Malkovich would be awesome.

Seems to look a lot like Dr Hugo Strange!
Boogie138 - 5/30/2012, 7:56 PM
if it is well written i am cool with it

until BAS freeze was not a very great character, had some moments but was not even top 20 material. after the cartoon freeze became the awesome we know in comics today. this is just one more attempt to flesh him out in the new 52

haters will hate, but i can understand. just feels like they are setting this new freeze to be a major player we are not suppose to like. or feel sympathy towards. bring it on
