COMICS: Relaunched Teen Titans To Feature New Gay Character "Bunker"

COMICS: Relaunched Teen Titans To Feature New Gay Character "Bunker"

As comics continue to show as much diversity as possible word has hit that a member of the relaunched Teen Titans will be gay. His name is Bunker, and you would never think it to look at him..

Ok so you would. Bleeding Cool picked up on the following Twitter conversation between Gail Simone and Brett Booth..

Gail Simone: Tomorrow I am on a panel not listed on the schedule, WHERE ARE THE GAY SUPERHEROES, at 11:00 am, in Mezzanine 1. It’ll be great!

Brett Booth: We got at least one in Teen Titans:)

Gail Simone: Really? Who is the gay superhero in TT? Can you say?

Brett Booth: Bunker is gay (the purple guy, I know, not my first color choice!)

Brett Booth: We’re trying to make being gay a part of who he is, your gaydar should be pinged right off the bat:)

Gail Simone: Thanks, Brett! I don’t know the character, but I would love to hear about him so I can tell people to look out for him!

Brett Booth: First appearance other than the cover to 1.

According to Bleeding Cool "Bunker" is Mexican born Miguel Jose Barragan. Gay characters in comics are nothing new although you can still pretty much count em on one hand. From Booth's description should we assume that Bunker's sexuality will be very a much a part of his story as apposed to someone like The Authority's Midnighter who just happens to be gay? Guess we will find out.

enough with all these gay characters!
RorMachine - 9/18/2011, 7:23 AM
I'm glad they made him fruity! Some gay guys are screamingly up front about it so that should be represented.

Run, why?
marvel72 - 9/18/2011, 7:23 AM
should of been robin,i always thought he was abit gay.
BooYah - 9/18/2011, 7:34 AM
Oh shit, we got the fashion police up in here.

No but seriously, why isn't Beast Boy, Starfire, and Raven in the comics instead of this guy.
spiderman1995 - 9/18/2011, 7:36 AM
i always thout wonder wonder was a lesbain
spidermonkeyman - 9/18/2011, 7:39 AM
I am fine with it. It really isn't a big deal.
RorMachine - 9/18/2011, 7:42 AM
Gay people don't have a certain dress code, but if my mate showed up somewhere dressed like that I would say "Are you gay now"?:)
CarpesDiems - 9/18/2011, 7:42 AM
i dont care about a homosexual superhero... now if it was a lesbian superchick i would be more interested :)
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 7:43 AM
They took Bugs Bunny off the air becasue his crossdressing confuses kids. What does this do??? I'm so confused.
spiderman1995 - 9/18/2011, 7:44 AM
i bet him and robin do it in the giant T they live in
tjbpinkfloyd - 9/18/2011, 7:45 AM
Having diverse characters is one thing, but having them be stereotypes is another. DC should take a look at Young Avengers if they want to know how to do a teen team right.
MarkV - 9/18/2011, 7:46 AM
This is really insulting to all the transexuals, lesbians and bisexuals. I guess they don't deserve to be represented in the DC world. Evidently male homosexuals are more important than other sexual identities.
BooYah - 9/18/2011, 7:46 AM
And why are the gay people always Mexicans in comics?

1) Miles Morales - half Mexican = gay
2) Bunker - Mexican = gay
CherryBomb - 9/18/2011, 7:47 AM

YAY (:
Bring on more Gay characters!

I wanna see a Male-to-female transexual superhero in DC comics! :D
JoshWilding - 9/18/2011, 7:47 AM
Great examples of gay characters in comics are Hulkling, Wiccan and Northstar. Their sexuality is handled maturely and they're all very likeable, relatable characters. (even if you're not gay) This actually just puts me off buying the title...seeing some hyper effeminate fruity looking dude is both cliched and not a character I'm desperate to read. Sorry if that offends anyone, lol. :P
RorMachine - 9/18/2011, 7:48 AM
He is JUST a superhero, he happens to be a gay superhero. What difference does it make? "This is getting ridiculous". I completely agree, it's ridiculous that in this day and age anyone actually gives a shit.
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 7:49 AM
I see people say they don't care and it's no big deal BUT If they turned a main title character gay, those same people would freak out. Batman or Superman being gay would kill the sales of the character and we all know it. Just make up a new gay character and kill them off when controversy or popularity drops.
darkknightlegend - 9/18/2011, 7:50 AM
I completely agree with Ror! Not all gay characters have to be closet. There are gay people who are obviously gay so why not do that in comics?
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 7:51 AM
Captain Brazil doesnt do it for ya lol
darkknightlegend - 9/18/2011, 7:51 AM
@Cherry... I think its just you who wants to see that :P
MarkV - 9/18/2011, 7:52 AM
Also, if theres just one gay superhero he's gonna be awfully lonely. Also, the name "bunker" seriously? Like "I'll be in my bunk?"
AlternateNo4 - 9/18/2011, 7:53 AM
his look is awesome... it's stupid that the media keeps giving us gay characters that "look like regular guys" because it's easier for the public to accept. i had a friend that came out in college, and in 24 hours he went from metallica tees & ripped jeans to pink polos & frosted hair. he looked at it as a hilarious slap in the face to all us straights that love to stereotype, and it was effin hilarious to see this 6'2" italian guy sashaying around the business department halls.

and @ MarkV - batwoman is gay and she's got her own title...
RunDTC - 9/18/2011, 7:53 AM
@Ror: don't they have enough already? he looks like the kind of gay character you'd see in a bad 90s comedy. the character you laugh at cause he's so fruity!
BooYah - 9/18/2011, 7:53 AM
Oh well we support gay people in my campaign!
TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 9/18/2011, 7:53 AM
is it just me or does the whole lets diversify evrtything seem like wasted effort
they should focus on making the comics better, and then selling them
AC1 - 9/18/2011, 7:56 AM
Wow, fruity. Do gays even dress like that, or is that just a stereotype so readers can tell he's 'gay'?
And I like how he's Mexican and jumping onto a moving train without buying a ticket. That's negative stereotype number two right there... I mean they may as well have given him a pink sombrero covered in daisies with the words 'GAY AND PROUD' emblazoned on the rim of the hat.
TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 9/18/2011, 7:59 AM
@xenix i agree completely sadly i think that will be the point of the character ... which is why it ticks me off
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 8:01 AM
fsucsu-If there were flashback stories about Dick Grayson hinting a gay lifestyle I would destroy the character (even though most people think he's gay anyway).Starman is graphically open and he won't be around for 50 years, then name but not this particlar character. I doesn't matter to me I still like Alpha Flight but it's a fad and it will cease soon enough.(making gay characters that is.)
Enterlion - 9/18/2011, 8:04 AM
I love how they try to appeal to the masses and throw in what they think works for certain stereotypes. We get a black Hispanic Spiderman, and now we have a gay Teen Titan. I don't have a problem with said characters but how they try to flaunt it like, "Oh look at us we have a gay guy!/Black AND Hispanic Spiderman!!!" Ultimate Colossus was gay and I feel like they tackled that pretty well. It seemed believable and real (aside from him being a mutant superhero). This is all too much in my opinion. haha.
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 8:04 AM
I agree with the focus should not be the characters gaydom. That makes me feel like after a battle that he can't wait to have a shirley temple at a bath house, c'mon stupid.
ForceOfLegend - 9/18/2011, 8:05 AM
I think DC needs to start worrying about making good movies instead of trying to please the gay community. Other than Batman, and possibly The Man of Steel. They are not doing that well.
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 8:06 AM
need that edit button when trying to type fast and answer stuff.
dbzmaster789 - 9/18/2011, 8:07 AM
@ForceOfLegend Exactly! focus on the movies not pleasing a certain community.
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 8:07 AM
meant to say "stupid DC"
kevberg - 9/18/2011, 8:10 AM
YEP , He's out loud gay dressed like that.

Seriously, Im much happier if they write a new character like this Gay ( and I feel the same way about killing off/changing a character because of ethnicity change or whatever) and they MAKE him cool or interesting.

Unlike BEAST whenever they made him all of sudden bI or gay in Morrisons run ...which he was NEVER established to be. Part of what made Beast cool was that he could woo the chicks despite his looks.
Checkmate - 9/18/2011, 8:14 AM
I hope he's not gay just for the sake of being gay.
ForceOfLegend - 9/18/2011, 8:14 AM
This is almost like selling out....Like DC is saying "hey look at us!". No wonder why Marvel is dominating at the box office.
ForceOfLegend - 9/18/2011, 8:16 AM
@ Dane I fear that is what this is about. Just to create a gay hero to appease to a certain group. Rather than creating a gay character with a purpose. I feel DC is just trying to attract attention.
darkknightlegend - 9/18/2011, 8:21 AM
Are you guys serious? DC ARENT making a big deal out of this. He's just another character in the Teen Titans and he's being plugged just as much as the others even if he's gay. Ror i only reporting on what he found out on twitter. It wasnt like DC had a big announcement to show how diverse they are...
ForceOfLegend - 9/18/2011, 8:22 AM
@ Froggy I am just looking at the satistics. DC is not doing well other than Batman. So maybe instead of being "diverse" they should focus on getting more attention on their comics by putting out quality films.
