KAPOW '12: DC To Turn A Prominent Character Gay?

Dan Didio revealed today in DC's Kapow panel that they are planning to bring back a DC character to the new DC Universe, but will change his or her sexual orientation. But who? Read more after the jump!

Although no name was given, Dan Didio revealed today at Kapow that they are planning to bring back a previously existing DC character into the DCnU but alter that character's sexual orientation.

Didio claimed that this character would become "one of our most prominent gay characters."

DC have taken the opportunity to introduce more LGBT character into the DCU thanks to last year's reboot, as well as expanding on already gay characters such as Batwoman. Gail Simone even revealed they were going to bring Catman out of the closet before the reboot; But this news certainly came out of left field.

I'm sure this news will cause much speculation as to who this mystery character is, so leave your thoughts and theories below!

I have a feeling it wont be one of the main superheroes or anybody I will willingly ship
DoomXfactor - 5/20/2012, 2:29 PM
It has to be Bizarro lol
DoomXfactor - 5/20/2012, 2:31 PM
Hawk or Dove
Knightrider - 5/20/2012, 2:33 PM
Bizarro would actually be a great idea, instead of loving Lois he loves Superman, with a talented writer that could be a fantastic story full of emotion.
Tomontherun99 - 5/20/2012, 2:34 PM
I have a feeling it will be Wally West and... I'm ok with that (Ducks from the abuse thrown at me from Flash fans)
RunDTC - 5/20/2012, 2:42 PM
they're just doing this to get people talking, not for the sake of story.
airbeyonder18 - 5/20/2012, 2:44 PM
It should be harley so her and ivy can finally develop their relationship on a more interesting level ;)
marvel72 - 5/20/2012, 2:47 PM
please be batman,please be batman.
Tomontherun99 - 5/20/2012, 2:48 PM
@RunDTC: Isn't everything Marvel and DC do because of that? I mean X-Men vs Avengers was pretty contrived....
PaulRom - 5/20/2012, 3:03 PM
Wonder Woman, Nightwing and Batman are my bets. But yeah, this is an unnecessary publicity stunt.
DaenerysTargaryen - 5/20/2012, 3:10 PM
I want it to be Nightwing because he is the easiest to ship. Now that I think about it....all of the Robins are easy to ship :P

I think it's going to be Wonder Woman, I mean she's been hating men a lot recently.
thatdylhooper - 5/20/2012, 3:19 PM
How bout the spectre? lmao
RunDTC - 5/20/2012, 3:21 PM
@Tomontherun99: yes, especially so the last few years.
ShoxSpidey95 - 5/20/2012, 3:21 PM
That would be awesome if it was "Super"man
mgeoff88 - 5/20/2012, 4:30 PM
There is quite a few characters that haven't been introduced in the New 52 reboot yet.

They don't make it clear if the person is a hero or villain. That doesn't exactly narrow it down.

I hope DC is doing this for the story, and not to make headlines.
MisterBabadook - 5/20/2012, 4:41 PM
Maybe Plastic Man. After the profound "Identity Crisis", no story could possibly live up to it.
GeneralZod1138 - 5/20/2012, 4:58 PM

Thank you! Everyone is calling out names of established characters.
My money is on Renee Montoya, and she'll be straight.

ISleepNow - 5/20/2012, 5:05 PM
@TonyEboy Not if they're Changing his sexual orientation..
TH3TRUTH007 - 5/20/2012, 5:52 PM
robin! look out! it's the fanny bandit. ROBIN: batman, I can't hear you, let me bend over to hear you better. BATMAN: robin! no don't bend over! noooooo! damn you fanny bandit damn yoooouuuuuu. fanny bandit: can't catch me batman, i'm wearing my speedy spanx, see you in the fall, when its the perfect weather for my jack-o lantern catsuit.
JatevinM - 5/20/2012, 6:11 PM
This is so stupid the only reason they are doing this is because having a gay character is the new it thing. If they want a gay character instead of making an established heterosexual character gay they should create a character who just happens to be gay.
marvel72 - 5/20/2012, 6:37 PM
i would love it to be batman,i wonder how many of you batmaniacs would continue reading & how many would drop the title.
RunDTC - 5/20/2012, 6:58 PM
@marvel72: I wouldn't read anything published afterwards.

Although I'd prefer if they just made a new character, it wouldn't bother me too much if it was Wally West. But a gay character that wasn't treated as a stereotype, with a good writer and his own series, would be interesting to see. We don't have enough new, modern, relevant characters that aren't spun off of pre-existing superheroes (Miles Morales). I think something new, original, and relevant is something the industry could use more of, as opposed to only telling the continuing adventures of 50-80 year old characters. Build new legacies.
TH3TRUTH007 - 5/20/2012, 8:39 PM
the fanny bandit, cmon its funny
JasonCYates - 5/20/2012, 8:49 PM
I agree, why can't they create BRAND NEW characters for these different minorities they are targeting??? Why do they prefer to change well known character to suit only one or two minority, not that other readers will be grossly alienated, but it's a needless and frankly desperate stunt.
CorndogBurglar - 5/20/2012, 9:00 PM
The article says they are BRINGING BACK A PREVIOUSLY EXISTING character...meaning someone who hasnt been introduced in the the new 52 yet.

My bet is Ted Kord.
JoeMomma29 - 5/20/2012, 9:01 PM
@ Marvel72 I would be okay with Batman being gay! He will still be the top super hero still in my book. But at least he would not be a hater!!!
JoeMomma29 - 5/20/2012, 9:04 PM
Maybe Zorro!!!

Tevii - 5/20/2012, 9:08 PM
Its not Nightwing or anybody already in the New 52. Its a character they have not re-introduced yet.
Wally West would be a safe bet.
neonhero - 5/20/2012, 9:16 PM
Catwoman, do you work for FedEx or something? So concerned with shipping things...

This feels like a forced move on DC's part, but so was the New 52, so I don't see why anyone whose enjoying that should be bothered by this unless they have deeper issues with homosexuality. In which case, a comic most likely isn't going to change their minds anyway. Though I doubt they made this decision to change minds. If it works inside the context of the story, that's all you can ask for, really.
koolaidbag - 5/20/2012, 9:21 PM
oh my god, another gay hero...fricking leave polotics out of comics and get rid of these freaking homo heroes it a bunch of bull crap I grew up looking up to heroes as idols and now every time I turn around another is gay it sux and I hate it.
limer99 - 5/20/2012, 9:26 PM
If it's Batman, I'm F'n done. ..
writernick - 5/20/2012, 9:44 PM
How 'bout JOKER!! I could see him as a gay character...
MatioShack - 5/20/2012, 9:45 PM
I think the safest bet would be Wonder Woman. Growing up on an island with no men? It's pretty well understood that when a large population of same-sex individuals are kept in an isolated environment (like a prison or an ISLAND) they will succumb to their baser instincts. Calling it now.
BlindLemonShemp - 5/20/2012, 9:47 PM
have they brought ray palmer back yet?
Optimus83 - 5/20/2012, 9:48 PM
Poison Ivy is Bisexual

Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)???
