“Behind every great hero, there are a whole lot of villains.” – Geoff Johns

BURBANK, CA (March 26, 2013) – The Joker, Bane, Deathstroke, Darkseid and Lex Luthor -- the scariest and most menacing villains in DC Comics’ universe -- take center stage in a brand new full-length documentary from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) and DC Entertainment (DCE). The joint announcement was made today by WBHE and DCE.

Christopher Lee, who has played the villain more times than almost any other actor, will provide his unique voice as narrator. His roles in more than 200 films include star turns as Dracula, the Mummy and Frankenstein’s monster in Hammer horror classics, Count Dooku in Star Wars, and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films.

In this new documentary film, the malevolent, sometimes charismatic figures from DC Comics’ hallowed rogues’ gallery will be explored in depth, featuring interviews with the famed creators, storytellers and those who have crafted the personalities and profiles of many of the most notorious villains in comic book history.

Production begins March 30, to coincide with WonderCon at the Anaheim Convention Center March 29-31.

Noted Geoff Johns, best-selling author and DCE’s Chief Creative Officer, “DC Comics is known for many things, but chief among them is the compelling, diverse and legendary society of super-villains who populate its universe. From the monstrous Solomon Grundy to the brutal Black Adam to the charismatic Sinestro, there is no single greater collection of villainy in all of fiction. These villains are hugely popular comic book characters in their own right and, quite honestly, many are often times more popular than some of our iconic super heroes.”

Jeff Baker, WBHE’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog, added “The DC brand is enjoying a huge resurgence thanks to the entire leadership team at DC Entertainment which is driving opportunities not only for new theatrical properties, but for brand extensions as well. This new documentary will reinforce this evolving strategy and leverage DC assets across the entire studio landscape.”

Johns also reiterated that this year’s initiative will be a turning point for DCE. “It’s time we deconstruct these complex and sinister antagonists and celebrate the role they play as the engine and energy of some of the greatest storytelling in comics. 2013 is the Year of the Villain at DC Comics.”

On Saturday, March 30th, fans attending WonderCon are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite DC Comics’ villain for an opportunity to be featured in the documentary Fans can join DCE at WonderCon at booth 801 with filming to take place Saturday from 10:30am – Noon. To find out more about where and what time to meet in the WonderCon DC Entertainment booth, keep checking the DC Comics Facebook ( and Twitter sites (@DCComics).

Participation in upcoming ‘cons’ (Comic-Con International: San Diego and New York Comic Con) is anticipated, with a full release scheduled for later in the year.

HellsHammer - 3/26/2013, 11:07 AM
Saw the killing joke pic and I got excited for an animated adaptation.
In all honesty they couldn't have picked a better person to narrate it.

Christopher Lee is the shiz! Joker is hands down the best but I really hope that Black Manta gets some attention.
Odin - 3/26/2013, 11:24 AM
This is going to be great.
JeighJeigh - 3/26/2013, 11:36 AM
My favorite DC villains are Sinestro and Brainiac. This documentary sounds really awesome though.
Rowsdower - 3/26/2013, 11:38 AM
This sounds awesome, but the title indicates that WB is desperate to keep their place on Nolan's dick.

I'm sure Bane will featured in a huge portion, with no mention of Bonecrusher of KGBeast.
JohnnyKrypton - 3/26/2013, 11:42 AM
That's SIR Christopher Lee, bub
MarkJulian - 3/26/2013, 11:43 AM

TheSisko - 3/26/2013, 12:08 PM
Bane, really? They choose a glorified movie henchmen as one of the top 5 villians of DC? Joker, Lex, and Darkseid make sense being on the list. Bane and Deathstroke are clearly attempts to capture the nolan and 'arrow' fans. In my opinion at the very least the anti monitor should have been on the list given how important to the DC multiverse he is. Even catwoman would make more sense the the people making the documentary want to use movie/tv footage so that is why bane and deathstroke are on the list.
hush - 3/26/2013, 12:08 PM
All about Sinestro and Hush for me
Minato - 3/26/2013, 12:11 PM
Braniac > Bane
Boogie138 - 3/26/2013, 12:21 PM
Thing sounds killer.

i have no problem with bane or deathstroke being part of the announcement. yes they are in current adapted media, so that makes sense from a promotional aspect but guess what? they are great villians. so why be surprised or upset they are mentioned? makes sense so non comic readers who watch dc films/tv shows will be interested. yes i have my own thoughts on who should be named in a press release, but if the random names mentioned to sell a product bother you, stay off the internet (its what i do to quell my nerd rage)

sir christopher lee is a bonus to an idea i am completely sold on

Documentary on DC villian sounds like a wicked idea.
Dev - 3/26/2013, 1:06 PM
Oh DC and their corny villain names.
MatchesMalone1989 - 3/26/2013, 2:06 PM
Dev 7 Your a fool.

Deathstroke - Dropped a living nuclear bomb on the city of Bludhaven killing millions.

Dr Light - Raped a super heros wife.

THe Joker - Kills Gordons 2nd Wife, puts his daughter in a chair. Killed many of gothams finest.

Reverse Flash - Killed Barry Allens Mother. Framed his father.

Darksied - Destroyed the Multiverse

Superboy Prime - Killed many teen titans/ Killed SuperBoy

Lex Luthor - Actually was able to become a multi million dollar criminal/ President of the united States.

Bane - Master Strategist took over Gothams crime world quickly and made the Batman feel FEAR.

The Flame Guy: Burned Martian Manhunter on live stream internet.

DC Villains take it there. Some Marvel villains do to. But Dc villains are [frick]ing brutal which is why I love them so much.
jerryblake - 3/26/2013, 3:04 PM
01: Bane (the Knight Fall version)
O2. Ozymandias from Watchmen
03. Venom (Eddie Brock - at least his first appearances)
04. Red Skull (from Captain America: Operation Rebirth)
05. Sabretooth (from A Kiss Before Dying )
06. Kraven The Hunter & Vermin (Kraven's Last Hunt)
07. Lobo (from Lobo: The Last Czarnian)
08. Grigori Rasputin and Baba Yaga from Hellboy stories
09. Mr. Hyde (from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
10. Hawley Griffin and Moriarty (from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
11. Harvey Dent/Two Face (from Batman:Black and White short story)
12. Scarecrow
13. Victor Zsasz (from The Last Arkham )

Also like Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale), Kaine (from Clone Saga stories), Scorpion,
Vulture (old Adrian Toomes, like that story when he was dying on cancer)),Shriek and Corona.
Special mention: Mad Hatter, The Penguin (from Joker:The Scangstas), and of course The Tally Man (Knight Fall)
Geektality - 3/26/2013, 3:04 PM
The flame guy is Fernus. Just sayin'. Also, Fernus isn't an actual person but a physical representation of J'onn's evil side. Imagine a Bizarro version of Martian Manhunter.

Also, CHRIS NOLAN DIDN'T INVENT THE PHRASE "NECESSARY EVIL"!!! It's a common phrase and it's true. Without evil in Gotham, Batman would not be needed. Without greatest bad guys in fiction (DC's rogues) there would be no need for the world's best superheroes.
Geektality - 3/26/2013, 3:05 PM
The tally man from Face the Face was a BAMF too. Too bad Jason Barb shot him in the skull.
GarthRanzz - 3/26/2013, 3:24 PM
I like people who call Bane a henchman, must not think highly of Darth Vader.
10. Hobgoblin (original)
9. Darkseid.
8. Time Trapper
7. Ras Al Ghul
6. Mr. mxypltk
5. Sinestro
4. Mogul
3. Deathstroke
2. Captain Cold
1. Lex Luthor

Just my personal favorites
TheSuperguy - 3/26/2013, 3:33 PM
Sounds pretty cool, just hope it doesn't focus on Joker for the whole thing.
MotionPictureFilms - 3/26/2013, 4:53 PM
Favourites (NOT most powerful or most anything; just favourites) have to be:

1. Deathstroke (simply because he's the most bad-ass villain in the DCU.
2. Vandal Savage
3. Prometheus
4. Paralax
5. Black Manta
6. Doctor Light
7. Two Face
8. Black Adam
9. Ozymandias
10.Prof. Zoom
citizenofgotham - 3/26/2013, 5:30 PM
Dev7 = Troll.

Talking all that shit.
JatevinM - 3/26/2013, 5:32 PM
TheSisko@ You clearly have never picked up a comic book with either of these characters in it if you even have to question their places on the list. Bane has one of the most iconic Batman storylines and images ever.
NoJobBOB - 3/26/2013, 7:17 PM
This sounds really awesome.
Canon38 - 3/27/2013, 2:36 AM
Batwoman is a Villain?
SnapperCarr - 3/27/2013, 5:11 AM
I'm looking forward to it.
