Kevin Feige Talks Josh Brolin As 'Thanos', BLACK PANTHER, IRON MAN 4, THOR 3 And More

In a lengthy interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, he offers updates on the status of many of their upcoming movie, as well as commenting on everything from Josh Brolin playing Thanos in multiple movies to the fact that they know what each of their movies up until 2019 will be...

In a very lengthy interview with Collider (which you can read in full by clicking on the link below), Kevin Feige has revealed a ton of intriguing new details about the present and future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before we get into their plans for 2015 beyond though, the site quized the Marvel Studios President about the decision to cast Josh Brolin as Thanos. "We knew he was going to be in this movie. We wanted somebody to be more than just the voice. Josh did the performance as well. We were looking at a wish list of, “Wouldn’t it be great if names,” and his name was on it. And you look at his face and the performances he gives, he could be Thanos without any effects. He has that kind of face and that kind of gravitas to it."

So, that confirms that Andy Serkis isn't providing the motion capture performance for Thanos then, and also that Brolin is bringing more to the villain that just his voice. As for how they went about casting the actor Feige added: "We reached out to him and it was one of those things that does not happen all the time but when it does it’s very nice, where he was totally intrigued. He was a fan of what we did, he met with Jeremy Latcham in a hotel in London and learned about the characters a little bit. I spoke to him on the phone a few times. We ran it by James who loved it, ran it by Joss who loved it because Thanos is in this universe because of Avengers. Then we shot him and recorded for it." As for whether or not the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For actor has signed a multi-picture dead, the producer confirmed that he has.

Talking of Guardians of the Galaxy, the site then asked Feige why an after-credits scene wasn't attached to the movie at recent press screenings. Does it mean that there isn't one of is it so secretive, Marvel just don't want to see it leaked online as they have so many times in the past? "It is done and it always varies. There’s no rhyme or reason, necessarily. Sometimes there are things that I think are just more fun to be discovered by the people. The normal people, not fancy pants like yourself who see it early and complain is not in IMAX—but to have a surprise on opening night. And it does vary, sometimes it’s because it’s not ready, sometimes we include it and sometimes we hold it back. We just decided it’d be fun to hold this one back." He then confirmed that Marvel know exactly which titles they will be releasing between now and 2019, but refused to reveal how many of these we'll hear about next weekend at Comic-Con (though he did tease something big in regards to Avengers: Age of Ultron).

"Both in development, both in the works," Feige said of Captain America 3 and Thor 3. "Cap has already been announced, so that’s up first. That’s in a further stage. Thor is being outlined right now, so both in the works." Oh, and will we see Robert Downey Jr. make a return as the Armoured Avenger in a fourth solo outing for Iron Man? "Of course anything’s a possibility. Who the heck knows? We have a lot of work to go to finish Avengers 2. We have a lot of work for whatever Avengers 3 is, that’s all folks need to know. Who knows what happens after that."

Finally, talk turned to why exactly Marvel have yet to head to Africa for Black Panther or have put the spotlight on a female superhero, but Feige remains open to the idea of introducing both of these in the near future. "I think we could, it’s a matter of when. It’s a matter of what are those dates, it’s a matter of juggling multiple, successful franchises. Is there a downside to managing multiple, successful franchises? I believe we’re figuring out that there is, which is having the time to do them all. So, at what point do we hold back a franchise or have three or four years between parts of a franchise in order to introduce new ones? Or do you introduce new ones within the body of the films? We’re looking at all those things right now." This is a lot of information to digest, but what do you guys think of Kevin Feige's comments?

I've liked all the post credits scenes thus far except for Iron Man 3. Sure the Banner Stark meeting was for shits and giggles but I'm all about these post credits scene leading to the bigger picture!
BlackIceJoe - 7/21/2014, 1:11 PM
Interesting read. I personally would prefer Iron Man 4 over Thor 3. I also would prefer Black Panther over another Thor movie. I just haven't ever been a big Thor comic fan.
Pasto - 7/21/2014, 1:12 PM
Jacky you sum'bitch.

This is what I wrote for the Dwayne Johnson/Shazam article regarding the casting of heroes and villains, where I pretty much summed up Josh Brolin as Thanos:

As much as I love the guy, you would need an actor with a certain gravitas to play a formidable villain such as Black Adam, that is why Dwayne's perfect for Shazam but not for Adam.

I don't know how some you guys can throw out crazy ideas of him possibly being Darkseid. Please tell me why, out of all the actors working in Hollywood, WB/DC would come to Dwayne Johnson for THAT particular role? Same goes for the crazy notions people had when Vin Diesel hinted at a Marvel role. Don't get me wrong, I love Vin Diesel too but when people cast Vin Diesel as Thanos, it sounds like the biggest joke ever. That is why Marvel has cast Josh Brolin, because they're smart and so is DC.

I would say Josh Brolin in my opinion is the perfect actor to portray Thanos. For them to choose him for the role caught me right off guard as it was rather unexpected and I had other actors in mind, but also perfect at the same time. As an extra perk, he even has face for Thanos when enhanced by prosthetics and CGI which never came to mind until they had cast him.

To all who want to see Dwayne Johnson as Darkseid, please give me valid reasoning. Is it due to physicality? Well he has that, but that's pretty much it. Don't get me wrong about this also, I'm not judging Dwayne Johnson in any way because I believe that if he is given the right role, then he can kill it as an actor. Just look at Pain & Gain for example, because that was an outstanding role for him in my opinion. The same goes for Vin Diesel aswell, give him a role that actually suits him, and no I don't mean typecasting these actors into the same "buff action hero" roles, just don't cast them as smart and menacing foes such as Thanos and Darkseid.

Anyone remember the time Jeffrey Wright was having meetings with Marvel and people were speculating that he could be playing Thanos? Now THAT is the type of actor I would like to see playing reputable villains in our comic book movies and that is the type of actor WB/DC will most likely select.

Also, looking towards the heroes now, I do not know how some of you people actually want to see Stephen Amell be a part of, and interact with the DCCU we are going to be getting... It just baffles me. Again, this also would sound like a big joke to me. I bet if any other up and coming CW "actor" was cast as Oliver Queen, you guys would probably want the same thing right? I'm guessing you are the same people who wanted to see Tom Welling become our next Superman on the big screen. As much as I like the show and it has a lot of success, Stephen Amell is far from what makes it. The only thing I admire is his dedication and that's pretty much it. I do not want to see the CW/DC universe have any part in the DCCU we are going to be getting. I could state a full list of things why I do not want this, but I'm choosing not to. Let's just say for me to want to see heroes such as Green Arrow and the Flash being integrated into a cinematic universe, they would need to be fully rebooted in cinematic form or just not as CW shows where is everything is crammed in and neutered down. I would love to see these shows in HBO or even follow the Marvel/Netflix route for their lesser known/street level characters.

I hope they announce Black panther at SDCC. His movie is over due imo.
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:14 PM
Josh Brolin as Thanos is really interesting casting to me..i am glad he also did the performance too
JoJo1982 - 7/21/2014, 1:16 PM
Give Iron Man 4 a rest now.....I wouldn't worry about continuing that franchise till after Phase 3
Vegeta - 7/21/2014, 1:16 PM
Just give me an Inhumans movie, and I'll be happy.
Pasto - 7/21/2014, 1:17 PM
Just give me a Deadpool movie, and I'll be happy.

Wait, wrong studio.
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:17 PM
JOJO-yeah i agree,i was happy with how Iron Man 3 ended, give that franchise a break for now
charlie2094 - 7/21/2014, 1:18 PM

Could be Thanos without the effects? That's nice :P

Would really like to see an Iron Man 4, with RDjr. I'd much prefer that over Thor 3, love it to be part of the newest slate of films. Think he needs a great send off, really like to see a payoff to all the Mandarin, Ten Rings Terrorist group stuff from the first two films. Hoping Black Panther is somewhere in Phase 3 too

Can't wait to see what they announce! What do you reckon they do announce? All Phase 3, or just like 2016/2017?
Pasto - 7/21/2014, 1:18 PM
There was a nod to BP in CA?
Pasto - 7/21/2014, 1:19 PM
McNyagano - 7/21/2014, 1:20 PM

I think they'll announce films up to 2017 and that's it. I know they have a plan but sometimes plans change and right now Feige needs to be 100% sure about what movies they'll be making, that's why I think he'll announce up to 2017.
ALmazing - 7/21/2014, 1:21 PM
Pheezmatic - 7/21/2014, 1:21 PM
^ agreed!
IM franchise needs this long break...dont want to see it get over-exposed....

...I feel the exact same way with Batman as well as Spider-Man franchises....

...Thor needs a high level movie too to stay in the game imo...or else he could use some shelving too..
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:21 PM
also..i guess Marvel week wasnt just limited to last week
charlie2094 - 7/21/2014, 1:24 PM

That's what I'm kind of expecting too, gives them a bit of room in case they change their minds on like the 2018/19 films. Not to mention they'll need some announcements for future comic-cons. Announcing Dr Strange, Thor 3 and at least one other film is all I'm really expecting.
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:28 PM
charlie-maybe but the announcements of release dates up till 2019 was interesting timing and i think they will reveal it all on comic con cause why announce the release dates close to comic con and not announce the titles soon too
McNyagano - 7/21/2014, 1:29 PM

Agreed. I hope they show some concept art and the casting of Stephen Strange. That's all I need, and Black Panther too. We really need some diversity in the MCU. I know people will bring up Rhodey and Wilson but those are side kicks.
OnePunchBaldy - 7/21/2014, 1:30 PM
Steve McQueen for Black Panther
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:32 PM
i also hope they announce Chadwick Boseman as T Challa at comic con too( a man can dream , can he?)
OnePunchBaldy - 7/21/2014, 1:32 PM
Black Panther has been in development since [frick]ing 1992 when Wesley Snipes wanted to do it, it's long overdue along with Dr. Strange
OnePunchBaldy - 7/21/2014, 1:35 PM
Chadwick Boseman or John Boyega for T'Challa

Idris for T'Chaka
JatevinM - 7/21/2014, 1:35 PM
I'm sorry but I call bullshit on the reasoning behind no Black Panther or Ms Marvel.
JoJo1982 - 7/21/2014, 1:35 PM

Much agreed
TheRationalNerd - 7/21/2014, 1:36 PM
Please no Iron Man 4. If it "must" happen get a different writer, director and actor. Hell, let Downey's son become the next Tony Stark if he's acting by then. But Downey will most likely be done after 2018. Focus on new marvel characters/avengers rosters for a while and then have a rebooted ironman.

If they decide to extend Downey's contract...I guess they could either go:

-Real Mandarin/Fin Fang Foom WITH an actual War Machine team up!
- I dunno I'm sure others have favorites.
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:36 PM
KidGoku-i dont think they knew how big Idris would become when they cast himas Heimdall which is why he doesnt have that big of role as heimdall..Boyega is gonna be busy with Star Wars for a few years..Boseman i think has had a couple of meetings with Marvel
JoJo1982 - 7/21/2014, 1:37 PM
I said several time for the past years why we need a black Panther movie
McGee - 7/21/2014, 1:37 PM
I can't wait to hear Thanos with a Midwestern accent. :D
DannyRand1225 - 7/21/2014, 1:38 PM
i can understand.. their franchises are tallying up,more and more and its gonna get a tough act to balance, hopefully they can balance it well
McGee - 7/21/2014, 1:38 PM
You guys are crazy.

Jon Hamm for Black Panther.
KingOnslaught - 7/21/2014, 1:38 PM
nice article a few new things but for the most part we already knew most of this
blackandyellow - 7/21/2014, 1:40 PM
Teams are starting to report for training camp, I got my first email about fantasy football today, and the NFL preseason starts on August 2nd. I'm so [frick]ing jazzed for football season to start.
