COMICS: Eisner-Award Winner Skottie Young Goes Cosmic In ROCKET RACCOON #1 Preview

This July, blast off with the smallest Guardian of the Galaxy (packing the biggest gun) in Rocket Raccoon #1, written and drawn by Eisner-award winning storyteller Skottie Young! Hit the jump for a first look at the issue ahead of the debut of one of the biggest movies of the summer...

As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of the good, and a protector the innocent. Not to mention a heartthrob to many intergalactic species across the galaxy. But is he ready to be…a fugitive?!

Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Rocket and his pal Groot’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may be a thing of the past as he’ll soon find himself on the run and on the wrong side of the law. And the authorities aren’t the only one’s hot on his TAIL! (Too easy). An intergalactic boxing match, fierce alien creatures, and a deadly militia of Rocket’s ex-girlfriends known only as the Exterminators – and that’s just the FIRST ISSUE!

“Despite Rocket’s attitude and antics he has a heart under there, says Skottie Young, in an interview with “He has some things he may or may not want to need in his life. He’s going to have to examine that. When you’re believed to be the last of your kind left in this galaxy or all the galaxies, that’s something you carry with you. That plays a role in the way you operate. We’ll see him explore that a little bit.”

“But ya know, right after that he’ll probably shoot some stuff,” he continued.

It’s one raccoon (but whatever you do, DO NOT call him a raccoon) against the entire galaxy this July as superstar creator Skottie Young brings his A-game! And the galaxy won’t even know what hit it! You do not want to miss the highly anticipated ROCKET RACCOON #1 when it blasts its way into comic shops and digital devices this July!

Let the snide comments about this not being true to the source material begin. I expect a load of pro-anything-goes-in-the-movies to point out that anyone who likes this comic is a hypocrite, because it doesn't follow the source material.

This is some of the WORST comic book art I have ever seen!
QuestiontheAnswer - 6/4/2014, 11:17 AM
This looks awful.
Donekin - 6/4/2014, 11:29 AM
I like it. It kind of reminds me of Earthworm Jim. Anyone?
TheRealDrDoom - 6/4/2014, 11:29 AM
Why are people being jerks. "worst comic book art" "looks awful". You don't even know what your talking about. Sorry the art isn't like every other generic thing you've seen before. And at least wait until it comes out to judge it. I met Scottie Young a few weeks ago and he is a really cool and nice guy.

I like Skottie Young's variant covers, but I don't know if his art can carry a whole series.

There have been plenty of comic book that anthropomorphized animal super heroes in comics that have been done exceptionally well when it comes to the artwork that have been celebrated by fans and critics alike.

For example...

Buck O Hare

Howard the Duck

But this look like he wasn't even trying or rushing to meet a deadline or simply high at the time.

Looks great to me.
You may hate Young's style, but that doesn't mean it's done poorly.
Plus it fits the series. It's not like he's doing Punisher MAX.

To be honest I kinda like this style of art. It doesn't look good on RR. It reminds me of Duckman

@ sKeemAn - LOL! LOVED THAT SHOW (and comic)!!!!!

I got the DVD set!
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 6/4/2014, 12:15 PM
Man I wish the interior coloring looked as good as that first cover.
GreenLanternLad - 6/4/2014, 1:35 PM
Not sure how I feel. I'll read the first few issues non the less however.
Asterisk - 6/4/2014, 1:46 PM
Seriously? This is some of the worst comic art ever? This is awesome!
SugarYumYum - 6/4/2014, 2:00 PM
Art looks good to me. It's his style. *shrugs*
Kyos - 6/4/2014, 2:18 PM
I like the art! :D
staypuffed - 6/4/2014, 3:09 PM
This is his 'normal' style. It's pretty cool if you ask me.
marvel72 - 6/4/2014, 3:38 PM
this looks like it could be worth a look.
MightyZeus - 6/4/2014, 7:52 PM
I guess i'm the only one who digs the art. I think it looks great and suits the tone.
ADParker - 6/5/2014, 4:28 AM
I actually love the art.
But I don't know... but for some reason this kind of art seems (to me) best suited for non-main-continuity material, and feels less 'real' than more 'mainstream' artwork does. Almost as if comics like this are the cartoons of that comic book universe. These divergent art style stories just take me out of the "suspension of disbelief" mode, and can't read them as a part of the ongoing continuity of the 616 characters/universe.

That's more of a personal hang-up, and not at all a criticism of the art itself, which as I said I actually like a lot. ;)

I reckon it's pretty rad. And a good fit.
derberg49 - 6/5/2014, 7:06 AM
