COMICS: First Look At John Romita Jr.'s Pencils From Marvel NOW! CAPTAIN AMERICA Series

Courtesy of our friends over at Comic Book Resources, we have a first look at some of artist John Romita Jr.'s (Kick-Ass) B&W pencils from his and Rick Remender's (Uncanny X-Force) highly anticipated Captain America Marvel NOW! series.

This October will see Ed Brubaker's epic eight year run on Captain America come to an end. However, as part of the planned Marvel NOW! relaunch, a new #1 issue will be released in Novemeber from the capable creative team of Rick Remender (Secret Avengers) and John Romita Jr. (Avengers Vs. X-Men). Thanks to Comic Book Resources, we have a first look at the following action-packed black and white pencils from the series.

Thrust into a bizarre, inhospitable world far from home, the all-new, high-adventure, mind-melting, tough-as-nails, sci-fi, pulp-fantasy era of Captain America is NOW! With no country and no allies, what’s left for the Sentinel of Liberty to protect? The Saga of Dimension Z begins here!

I really hate Jrjr... Please fire him
longbowhunter - 8/17/2012, 6:48 AM
Wow...what the hell is going on here?
cyked - 8/17/2012, 6:50 AM
A lotta people really bash JR's work. And admittedly, his stuff on AVX seemed a bit less than polished.

I enjoyed his WWHULK series a lot. Whenever he's not trying to push-push-speed-zipp out material and takes his time with it, I think he produces some quality work.
ddrussianinja - 8/17/2012, 6:50 AM
Nepotism hard at work.
RustyShackelford - 8/17/2012, 6:50 AM
Not bad, I didn't like the first picture they posted (it was a cover I think) but his interior work looks better. I'm not a huge fan of his art but he's not the worse artist either.
SWelch - 8/17/2012, 6:51 AM
Both Romitas are two of my favorite artists. Anything Jr does I love. I really like how he forged his own style seperate from his father.
TheManWithBigEars - 8/17/2012, 6:52 AM
Thought they got rid of the wings... Whatever Romita's art still looks liked boiled turds...
AmazingFantasy - 8/17/2012, 6:52 AM
Inb4 shit art...
This is JrJr right now at his haters.

I enjoy his art.

TheDARKestKNIGHT - 8/17/2012, 6:54 AM
Romita Jr sucks.
KrazyForKomix - 8/17/2012, 6:56 AM
This guy is the closest thing we have to Kirby (without being a rip-off). I wish HE had drawn the Omac (52) series rather than homage-boy, Giffen.
Shadowelfz - 8/17/2012, 6:58 AM
Yeah not a fan. If you look up plain and boring in the dictionary youll find a pic of JRjrs. art.

Still, at least he's no pope or, god forbid, Igor Kordey
MGS - 8/17/2012, 6:58 AM
The only real talent in the family is John Romita senior. Nuff said.
Fogs - 8/17/2012, 7:06 AM
I love JRJR's art. Always loved his style.
Keldor - 8/17/2012, 7:11 AM
Those look like ink jobs, not pencils...
jimoakley666 - 8/17/2012, 7:12 AM
@Shadowelfz - Why would there be a picture in a dictionary?
niknik - 8/17/2012, 7:13 AM
The only thing I hate worse than JRJR's crappy art is Caps redesigned uniform. Why does everyone have to have padded, armored, line and patchwork filled uniforms now? Not only does it look like crap, but it's way overused on every character redesign now. Like a bunch of cookie cutters at work.
Keldor - 8/17/2012, 7:14 AM
His artwork is cheap. Marvel must be saving alot of money hiring this guy for his art. Maybe he can produce art real fast, faster turnaround than most? Maybe thats why marvel hired him? He must be cheap and/or fast because otherwise why would Marvel hire him for all these books? I see his artwork too much in marvel. He seems to be drawing everything. I dont like his is cheap and shallow and looks slopped together. Just my opnion.
Keldor - 8/17/2012, 7:16 AM
I mean every face he draws looks like he has whiskers because of his stupid cross hatching.Every face he draws looks like the drummer for Kiss. Cheap.
inky - 8/17/2012, 7:26 AM
JRjr is a good artist when he is drawing subjects he can feel or have some connection to other than that he does tend towards mechanical boring work, at least he has the ability unlike some who's art work at best is low grade.
in some ways it is marvels own fault having so many different comics in production some could be reduced to quarterlies or premium issues reclassed to graphic novel only giving writers and artists time to produce great quality work rather than rushed ok work.
Spidex3000 - 8/17/2012, 7:28 AM
It doesn't look that bad, all of his characters just look really young though.
SmellofDuty - 8/17/2012, 7:30 AM
The real debate should be whether the evil mastermind has a tree gun or not. Because that dude looks like he's growing branches out of his back.
ShadowOfTheWeb - 8/17/2012, 7:34 AM
Wow what's with all the hate for Jr? That's some classic, dynamic comic book art
rogmel - 8/17/2012, 7:52 AM
I may have to drop this book from my monthly pull. I can't stand his work and this, regardless of the number of lines he uses to depict motion or shading, looks like crap.

Looks like I'm saving $4 a month.
Viltrumite - 8/17/2012, 7:54 AM
I've always loved JRJr's artwork, mostly because I grew up on his Amazing Spider-Man issues. Can't wait for this series, most of Marvel NOW! has gotten me pretty excited.
YOUNGBL00D - 8/17/2012, 7:56 AM
YOUNGBL00D - 8/17/2012, 7:56 AM
And spidey
Harris1 - 8/17/2012, 7:59 AM
What's up with the wings? No one else is drawing them the old school way. This dude always has to be different
KrazyForKomix - 8/17/2012, 8:01 AM
Wings good. Wish more artist remembered them.
randomality85 - 8/17/2012, 8:10 AM
Normally I'm not a big fan of JRJR work, although his style works for certain comics. I was thinking of not picking this up, but I like this a lot! It's changing my mind and somehow it seems kinda fitting, an old retro pop comic with tons of action. Constant hyper realism or Jim Lee-esque pencils are kind of getting old. That being said, I would still love it if a DC artist would take a shot at this... Capullo, Roccafort... and ESPECIALLY Ivan Reis.
NorrinRaddical - 8/17/2012, 8:23 AM
loved his art since "DD: man without fear" came out.

can someone confirm if this is pencils or pencils and inks? looks like inks, but these days, some craftsmen throw me for a loop (Leinel-Yu and Roccafort look like boosted pencils only, and i love it)
sameoldthing - 8/17/2012, 8:28 AM
Those pages are outta page comes after bottom page.
Romita Jr. is a good artist.
Rob Liefeld is bad..not artist, just plain BAD,as in NOT GOOD.
marvel72 - 8/17/2012, 8:32 AM
not bad,i would like to see the finished product.
superotherside - 8/17/2012, 8:37 AM
Can't wait. Rick ought to do a great job. Loved Secret Avengers.
xstryker - 8/17/2012, 9:03 AM
Not a fan, but I do think JRJr's art looks better on Cap than it does on most other titles.
LoudLon - 8/17/2012, 9:19 AM
J.R. Jr. gets a lot of work because he's fast. I also believe his quality has suffered over the years but I don't think he deserves the bashing he gets from folks 'round here. Dude gets his pages turned in, finished and on time. It's why he was in high demand thirty years ago and it's why he works regularly now.
GLprime2814 - 8/17/2012, 9:23 AM
Don't like how the movies are bleeding into the comic, specially since the movies seem to be an amalgamation of 616 and ultimate, or it's it's own universe all together.
TruBeliever - 8/17/2012, 9:26 AM
Please for the love of all that is great and beautiful art that precided the page I just saw. GET JRJR OFF MY FAVORITE COMIC BOOK or I will take brillo pad to my Cap tattoo
Name - 8/17/2012, 9:38 AM
TruBeliever, you're only hurting yourself
GodzillaKart - 8/17/2012, 9:44 AM
John Romita one of the best artists out there today.

Living legend, just like Cap.
GodzillaKart - 8/17/2012, 9:45 AM
@SpeedForce: Exactly.
