COMICS: Marvel Bringing Back The "New Universe" In AVENGERS #9

COMICS: Marvel Bringing Back The "New Universe" In AVENGERS #9

Marvel NOW! will mark the return of the New Universe, an '80s imprint set in a completely different, more realistic continuity, with characters such as Knightmask, Justice and Star Brand, who appears to be featured on the cover to Avengers #9!..

I really never thought I'd see the day Marvel revisited the New Universe. For those a little younger than my decrepit self, the imprint ran from 1986 to 1989 and focused on a more real-world group of characters. It was never really considered a success, but some of the comics were pretty damn good, particularly Jim Shooter's Star Brand, who appears to be making his presence felt on the cover to Avengers #9 below.

• Watch as the most dangerous weapon in the Universe is unleashed.
• Two Universal SYSTEMS collide.
• What good is a White Event if only leads to the destruction of the planet it was meant to transform?

Will this spin off once again into an entirely new Marvel imprint? Or will it be contained within the pages of Marvel NOW! as a kind of an alternate universe that exists within the main continuity? Only time will tell.

Jollem - 1/18/2013, 7:23 PM

I was in my comic book hay day back then. I was probably one of the few that mourned the new universe. PF7 & PSI Force were awesome magazines. Justice and star brand weren't bad either. Mark Grunwald was the best! He had an excellent run Quasar

I really miss those days. Marvel Was really on top of its game Back then
RorMachine - 1/18/2013, 7:28 PM
Yes, loved The Pitt. New Universe was almost Vertigo before Vertigo..although DC always had the "suggested for mature readers" thing.

@ Nomis

star brand was the best of the new universe titles,so f*ckin powerful he destroyed the whole of pitsburgh i.e the pitt storyline.

but i do agree with ya most of the other titles were shit spitfre & the trouble shooters springs to mind.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/18/2013, 7:41 PM
dafuq!!!! marvel I am disappoint. new universe was shit shit shitty shit. i don't hate too often but when i do it's new universe. take your nostalgia glasses off, even i was a kid and thought it was stupid.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/18/2013, 7:42 PM
wait, you guys having some loving with this new guy gusto?... without me? ummm, wateva, soo not jealous.
Temple - 1/18/2013, 7:44 PM
Damn, Hickmans bringing back starbrand along with the New Universe, thats crazy. Starbrand can easily take on the whole marvel universe, ha. So I guess the tweet sam humphries leaked about Hickman writing a new DP7 series was true. This is mind blowing.

@ ToTheManInTheColdSweat

i thought star brand was good the best of the new universe titles,if you don't like it that's down to you.
Jollem - 1/18/2013, 7:49 PM
lol. i have a feeling i'm going to be the meat in a rape sandwich
ADParker - 1/18/2013, 7:53 PM
It's hardly the first time thay have revisited the New Universe, or tried to incorpoerate the characters somehow.
I liked those stories though, for the most part, they were different and less convoluted by history or other goings on in their universe. A fresh change of pace from the MU.
I wonder how it will play out this time.
RorMachine - 1/18/2013, 7:55 PM
Most of em were crap yes, but what was good was very good. Star Brand, DP7, Psi-Force..and The Pitt, The Draft and The War were awesome, although to be fair I was like 7 reading them!
marvel72 - 1/18/2013, 7:57 PM
@ gusto

you suck more than the green lantern movie you gay bastard,i remember green lantern being your favorite character shame it couldn't be your favorite comic book movie as well. :D
StephenStrange - 1/18/2013, 8:02 PM
Yeah Firebrand was definitely the best of the New U

mctrinket - 1/18/2013, 8:04 PM
It was an interesting experiment...maybe before it's time? In the end it failed for numerous reasons, but mainly by not going far enough (see Vertigo, etc.).
marvel72 - 1/18/2013, 8:07 PM
@ gusto

you going to the bar......

welcome back mate. :D
CavEl - 1/18/2013, 8:14 PM

LoudLon - 1/18/2013, 10:37 PM
Kickers Inc!
TerminalVoyd - 1/18/2013, 11:30 PM
This'll be the third time the New Universe shows up in "Marvel proper" since the end of it's first run. Here's hoping the third time's the charm and it takes off.Marc Hazard: Marc, Psi-Force, Spitfire and D.P.7 were also solid titles.

It's a shame the Shooter era politics and corporate killing Marvel's budget happened right around the launch and cut the legs out from under it. And now I want to reread the whole damn thing from the original launch down to the '06-07 Untold Tales/New Universal comics. This.... may take awhile.
mgeoff88 - 1/19/2013, 12:57 AM
The cover is fantastic!

Wow! Gusto is back!?! Welcome back!

And after you're done getting hammered at that gay bar, make sure to call a cab when you head home. ;P
DRMidNite - 1/19/2013, 3:52 AM
Star Brand was awesome and so was the Pitt. Kickers, Inc. was just retarded.
UltimateTypeface - 1/19/2013, 5:07 AM
I dont believe that is the real Gusto.

I got Starbrand #1 WOOOO HOOOOOO!!!
UltimateTypeface - 1/19/2013, 5:09 AM
When exactly did the New Universe and the Marvel universe collide 3 times?
Nomadic1 - 1/19/2013, 6:40 AM
Nice to see you back Gusto. Your rambler break down or something.
SpideyQuad - 1/19/2013, 8:07 AM
I can't believe the amount of new universe haters. I can't help thinking are you thinking about the 80s version, or the limited series from the 2000's?

I can tell you one thing I read the new universe original run and it was far superior to anything Bendis has done in the mainstream. Writing, art, and the overall script that it followed. Justice was everything the punisher should've been, even night mask had an intriguing story. In the end I think it all came down to sales.

Say what you want, if you did not like it I can understand, but the problem was never a quality thing. Marvel Assigned its best writers and artists for the run.

I was less enthused with the Pitt, The beginning of the story was awesome but it seemed to lose steam for me in the third part. It felt like everything was forced because of the universes cancellation.

I've always felt it was like a loss not see the conclusions to D.P.7 or especially PSI-force. I was really locked into those stories :-(
avengingson - 1/19/2013, 2:34 PM
Kicker, Inc!!! Yes!!! Haha... actually that was probably one of the worst New Universe titles, but I loved it as a kid for some reason...
Dunejedi - 1/20/2013, 1:16 PM
The only one I followed for the whole run was Psi-Force. Thought Starbrand was pretty good, too. I appreciate that they were trying to create something new and they had some success. They've piqued my curiosity, I'd like to see where this goes.
