COMICS: Rob Liefeld Causes A Storm On Twitter After Highlighting "D-List" DEADPOOL Talent

Following the announcement of the new Marvel NOW! creative team, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld caused quite a controversy on Twitter after sharing his thoughts on the "D-List" talent that Marvel always seems to assign to the Merc with a Mouth.

When was the last time you remember Brian Michael Bendis or Dan Slott writing a Deadpool comic book? How about seeing the likes of John Romita Jr., Oliver Coipel or Steve Epting on art duties? Well, that's the point that the character's creator, Rob Liefeld, brought up on Twitter yesterday (and it didn't go down particularly well). It's worth noting that Liefeld did apologise for his initial comments, acknowledging that his use of the words, "D-List," may have been a poor choice. Here are a selection of the Tweets which caused the controversy.

While Lifeld's comments may seem a little harsh, he has a point. After a week of new creative team announcements for the Marvel NOW! status quo which included the likes of Jason Aaron and Mark Waid, the reigns of Deadpool are being handed over to comedian Brian Posehn and G4's Gerry Duggan. Neither have a great deal of experience writing comic books, although they have been teamed with a fairly prominent artist in the form of The Walking Dead and Venom's, Tony Moore. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with this creative team (as someone who hasn't loved Daniel Way's take on the character, I for one can't wait to see what they come up with) it's a valid question why exactly no "A-List" talent ever seems to be assigned to the title. Regardless, Twitter did not react too kindly to Liefeld's remarks, and Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, Uncanny X-Force writer Rick Remender and cover artist Dave Johnson all chimed in with their thoughts.

rob liefeld has developed a few notable toons but deadpool was comic relief not main line like cable etc.
i think he is still smarting over being booted off marvels last major reboot becouse his art work was at its worst in ages.
the deadpool story realy is as antagonist to weaponX wolverine and his popularity grows out of the fact he still is comic relief to any other comic toon.
didnt deadpool have his own run under marvel but where was liefeld, some other company i believe so why didnt he stay with deadpool and help promote the toon, sour grapes is what i read from his twitter he didnt mention cable not being busy of late no just deadpool becouse stories of a deadpool movie means recognition and money.
RorMachine - 8/3/2012, 4:26 AM
If this were anyone else, I'd say they had a point..but it's Rob frackin Liefield. He is not aloud to have an opinion on ANYONE'S talent or lack thereof. Ever.
Fabs - 8/3/2012, 4:28 AM
Rob Liefeld is just bitter because he's still on the F-list..
inky - 8/3/2012, 4:29 AM
i still have rob liefeld's cable number 1 and his captain america from heroes reborn that after about 5 issues some one else takes over and the art improoves tenfold, nothing against liefeld he can be a good comic book artist etc but sadly he does lack commitment and seems easily put off, seems the lure of money, recognition etc has taken his mind for the moment.
toco89 - 8/3/2012, 4:31 AM
All I can say is he has a point seeing as Deadpool has made Marvel some good money in recent years. And he stood his ground on what he was right about and apoligized for being a bit brutal toward the teams, even though he was right especially about him thriving despite being written by Daniel Way who either didn't give a damn or is just simply a hack writer.
SuperSomething616 - 8/3/2012, 4:34 AM
This is rich coming from a talentless hack!!!

I'm comic illustrator also and although I work on the rule that anatomy in comics can be exaggerated...

Liefields work borders on other credible artist would ever submit their work with wonky eyes like Liefield has...and dont even get me started with the Captain 'pufferfish' America piece!!!

I think Liefield thinks a little too much of himself!!!
nikgrid - 8/3/2012, 4:38 AM
Liefeld is [frick]ing D-list, Deadpool's not that great a character either. Oh and [frick] Greg Land and Marvel for hiring him. Liefeld can't draw but at least he tries :)
SkullFace616 - 8/3/2012, 4:41 AM
Yeah he really has no right to call others bad:

That's some funny reading there :o)
BigDamnHero - 8/3/2012, 4:42 AM
Rob Liefield is notable only for being the least talented person to ever make it big in comics. What a complete douchebag! He can't write for sh!t and he's an even worse artist.
badrat - 8/3/2012, 4:52 AM
I never liked his art style. It was always weird to me.
TheGambitFreak - 8/3/2012, 4:56 AM
Hmmm... That's funny. By the way, hey Rob, what was shown in that special screening of the Deadpool Movie you claim to have viewed? Oh that's right, you shove your thumb up your butthole and pull it out then rub it on the end of your pencil led and draw shit like this:

God I hate your stupid [frick]face so much you plagiarising tool!

"This is rich coming from a talentless hack!!!

I know where this comment is going...
SuperSomething616 - 8/3/2012, 5:03 AM
@ TheGambitFreak - Yup thats the one i was talking about...

Absolutely anyone who claims to be a comic book artist draws anything like that is beyond me...
MisterFixit - 8/3/2012, 5:04 AM
lol Rob Learn to draw the human anatomy instead of wasting time on twitter
SuperSomething616 - 8/3/2012, 5:05 AM
@ DeadpoolVSPunisher - where was it going prey tell? :0
inky - 8/3/2012, 5:13 AM
@ thegambitfreak, at least in that picture the shield is fully round but looking at it judge dredds jaw and no nose let alone the venom infusion he must have stolen from bane to bulk up like that was about the least good looking cap since he first apeared, liefeld did draw a nice shield :)(but any monkey with a pencil and a few cans could have done it aside:) )

TheGambitFreak - 8/3/2012, 5:16 AM
Damn Rob, Remender (Who arguably is owning the best Marvel Comic right now, Uncanny X-Frce is sick!) and Dave Johnson owned your tiny whimpy pathetic ass!

Plus, Deadpool was utter shit when Liefeld was writing him.

Also, Posehn is gonna make Deadpool his little cuddly bitch, the guy is a heart throb!

breakUbatman - 8/3/2012, 5:29 AM
Funny he doesn't talk about the D-list talent on Deathstroke and Hawkman.

If Deadpool is thriving why put so called A-listers on that book? Recall that Thor got Coipel and JMS because a new volume was being started after 3 years.
mctrinket - 8/3/2012, 5:31 AM
Brian Posehn is really funny and a massive comic book nerd. He is also more well known than most "A List" comic book writers and will probably attract new readers.

I also think he'll do a great job and make it really dark and funny.
LP4 - 8/3/2012, 5:31 AM
Liefeld is D-list, stupid hack copied Deathstroke
pepe - 8/3/2012, 5:39 AM
Liefeld is the worst comicbook artist ever... and now even the worst person on the planet...
Fogs - 8/3/2012, 5:41 AM
Damn, I hate that guy.

He's willing for his "creation" to get hyped and get a movie so he can make some easy money on Marvel / Fox.

"Asshole" is a compliment for this idiot.
LordHuck - 8/3/2012, 6:15 AM
I hope Liefeld stays banished from Marvel or anything I read forever.
jimoakley666 - 8/3/2012, 6:31 AM
What a crushingly twat-tastic wank brain this [frick]ing tool is. My man, you may be well known, but your own skill set is WAY beyond d-list. You make the z-list look like an achievement you cannot possibly hope to make.

Who let this chimp work in the comic book industry in the first place? I demand they be hobbled, Misery style.
marvel72 - 8/3/2012, 6:34 AM
garth ennis & mike deadato jr would be my choice of creative team for deadpool.
marvel72 - 8/3/2012, 6:38 AM
@ intruder

marvel should have a suggestion box, that would definetly become my favorite title.
ComicBookGoth - 8/3/2012, 6:47 AM
as far as i'm concerned Rob Liefeld & Uwe Boll are the same person.
and therefor deserve non of my attention.

Just ignore him

Thanks for this, Rob
REDSTORM - 8/3/2012, 6:57 AM
Liefeld's mother was a hamster and his father smells of elderberries. I fart in his general direction.
AmazingFantasy - 8/3/2012, 6:59 AM
He can suck money ass
johnnymarr - 8/3/2012, 7:11 AM
Why do people keep hiring this man!?!?

Obviously he has pictures of someone important in a compromising position with farm animals.
kirynthemighty - 8/3/2012, 7:12 AM
Where I do get where he was going, he really stuck his foot in his mouth. Deadpool is my favourite character and I would be lying if I wasn't worried that this new team is still going to turn him into a [frick]ing laughable joke. I want it taken by Remender, he can write Deadpool as a bad ass and still have funny humour like the clip above. With Way on that title he made him like a bumbling idiot that just happens to with from being an idiot and thats not Deadpool. Crazy, funny, goof off, yeah; but also extremely deadly and is an extreme tactician besides the cards he shows you. THATS how he should be written, just like in volume 1. I just hope that Posehn and Duggen don't prove Leifield right and totally continue to [frick] over my favourite title.
DoodPool - 8/3/2012, 7:30 AM
time after time the kids on comic book movie show what ungrateful naive little brats they are.
JatevinM - 8/3/2012, 7:32 AM
I'd love to see all of you who are talking crap about Leifield do better than him.
Fogs - 8/3/2012, 7:37 AM
I'm better than Liefeld and I CAN PROVE IT.

I did this in 15 minutes. In paintbrush. With a mouse.

It has better proportions and anatomy than most things he's ever done.

And I'm not even kidding.

hellfire - 8/3/2012, 7:46 AM
@fogs haha Excellent If ya can do that in 15 I'd like to see what ya can do in a couple of hours mate.
Tevii - 8/3/2012, 8:03 AM
I see Liefelds point that they never put their BEST writers on Deadpool.... but he couldve worded it WAY better. A way that didnt insult the teams on the book, but still made his point to Marvel.

But Liefeld has always been a punk in the industry
Fogs - 8/3/2012, 8:04 AM
@hellfire - well, I'd probably correct his front leg, hahaha.
