First Appearance Of Iron Man In TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 Sells For A Record Price

A CGC 9.6 copy of Iron Man's first appearance has sold for a record price just a week before he and the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble on the big screen in North America. Hit the jump for details.

With The Avengers currently assembling in theatres worldwide, it's not hard to imagine why the first appearances of the team members are selling for record prices. In the past year, The Avengers #4 CGC 9.6 sold for $91,500, Captain America Comics #1 CGC 9.2 for $343,000, Journey into Mystery #83 CGC 9.4 for $222,200 and Avengers #1 CGC 9.6 for $250,000. Bleeding Cool now reveal that Tales of Suspense #39 CGC 9.6 has been sold for $375,000 through Comiclink. There are only three issues with this grade in existence, and this easily breaks the record set in March 2011 when a CGC 9.4 copy of the comic was sold for £147,500. The comic, which features the first appearance of Iron Man in a story by Stan Lee and Don Heck, is sure to only increase in value when the armoured Avengers returns to the big screen in Iron Man 3 next year.

Thats sweet. It's good to hunt around as I came across The Invincible Iron Man #1 last month and bought it for £159.

I use to own a copy of the first appearance Tales of Suspense #39 in the late 80's, but it wasn't near mint. Had to sell it for rent during college days for less then a $100. I think I will lay in bed all day and cry today.

honestly, tales of suspense #39 is the best iron man cover of all time. if it doesn't make you want to read the book as fast as possible, your inhuman! i miss covers that looked like this, i mean silver age books had the coolest covers. ok i off to win the lottery now so i can grab one...

Man, they knew how to market comics back then! There is 4-5 selling points right on the cover.

"Who? WHo? WHo?"

"He lives, He walks, He conquers!"

I don't know about the rest of you, but if time travel were possible, I would go back and buy all these 12 cent first appearances. I'd keep one for myself, and buy a half a dozen extra (don't wanna get to many and create a butterfly effect) to sell in present day.
theomegasanction - 4/28/2012, 10:42 AM
anything you did would have a butterfly effect; its the whole point of the theory that one minor change, even taking just one comic book back, could change history in a major way. that being said i would still take a ton of them back myself
