Kevin Feige Clears Up The SUB-MARINER Situation

Fans have wondered if and when we'd see Namor, the Sub-Mariner up on the big screen alongside the likes of Cap, Thor and Iron Man..but rumors persisted that the rights were actually owned by Universal/Legendary. While speaking to IGN Kevin Feige sets things straight..

Namor The Submarine Marvel Studios May Have The Rights To Namor After All

In a new interview with IGN, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige discusses the studio's next feature, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and if there's a possibility of another character Vin Diesel (Groot) could wind up playing further down the line. Funnily enough, Diesel has been many fan's pick for Namor, and the site finish up the interview by asking Feige about the volatile Sub-Mariner. Although we've never really had any concrete info regarding Marvel's plans for this character, most have felt it's only a matter of time before he makes his big-screen debut. but, a while ago a rumor emerged that another studio actually held the rights and were planning a Namor movie themselves. Now, Feige confirms that Marvel do have the rights,'s complicated!

IGN: Finally, there were rumors circulating awhile back that Universal and Legendary Pictures were developing a Sub-Mariner movie, but there was also some confusion about who holds the rights to the character. So could Legendary make that movie at this point?

Feige: No.

IGN: So if a film were to happen it would be you guys making it?

Feige: Yes, but it’s slightly more complicated than that. Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in.

So, although Marvel CAN make the movie, it sounds like some messy legal stuff means they probably won' least in the foreseeable future.

aquaman is so much better than namor
Doopie - 7/18/2014, 4:42 AM
dc will probably beat them to the first underwater cbm.
GrimFeature - 7/18/2014, 4:44 AM
I hope marvel make this movie one day.
MightyZeus - 7/18/2014, 4:44 AM
DC will probably beat Marvel, Aquaman will be showing up soon.
McNyagano - 7/18/2014, 4:44 AM
Wait so Marvel Studios has Namor?

Well I think it's the same deal they had with the Hulk. They make the film and Universal distributes it.
Vegeta - 7/18/2014, 4:48 AM
I agree with grif.
blackandyellow - 7/18/2014, 4:48 AM
There's absolutely nothing homoerotic about watching a guy with elf ears in a speedo frolicking in the water for 2 hours.
charlie2094 - 7/18/2014, 4:49 AM
Be good to see them use him at some point, but with Aquaman heavily rumored to appear, think it's likely he'll get a film first which could put Marvel off, a lot of similarities.

I imagine it's a similar case to how they got Hulk back, by having Universal distribute it. Could be part of the reason there hasn't been another Hulk film since or planned for the new few years. Be cool if they could get them both back completely

I generally don't care for Namor or Black Panther, but they have both been awesome in the current New Avengers series. The tension between them after their conflict makes for some great interactions and character moments.
JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 4:55 AM
There are so many other characters Marvel can be focusing on right now.
Doopie - 7/18/2014, 4:56 AM
What are the chances of a Namor film and an Aquaman film being announced with the same day of release?

which would you watch first?
JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 4:57 AM

Hands down I would watch Aquaman first.
JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 4:58 AM
Marvel how about you actually focus on a new Hulk movie.
charlie2094 - 7/18/2014, 4:58 AM

I'd definitely have to go with Aquaman, much prefer his character. Namor's still good though.
Vegeta - 7/18/2014, 5:00 AM

Aquaman, without a doubt.
Floke - 7/18/2014, 5:03 AM
@Doopie If Aquaman and Namor would come the same day, it would be an awfull lot of seamen on the big screen.
ProfessorX - 7/18/2014, 5:05 AM
A Namor solo film would be unnecessary, but they could use him for an Invaders/Defenders movie.
Maven - 7/18/2014, 5:05 AM

MsDarkPhoenix - 7/18/2014, 5:05 AM
Namor kidnapping Sue Storm or gtfo. Since that wouldn't happen in a live action movie, then Aquaman it is.

It was always Aquaman, but it'd be fun as hell if Namor kidnapped Sue, I'd go see the movie just for this!! Meeeh probably not, AQUAMAN RULES!
McNyagano - 7/18/2014, 5:06 AM

YoungThanos - 7/18/2014, 5:09 AM
Old contracts???

Let me find out Namor still has ties to that F4 crap Fox is making. I swear that damn studio, ruins more progress for others than they ruin Marvel movies!

MsDarkPhoenix - 7/18/2014, 5:09 AM
I think that Namor is the type of guy I'd avoid... Kinda like Gusto...
Floke - 7/18/2014, 5:11 AM
Why didnt he say the rumors been floating around? Meh.. he.. he.. aw that was bad. Sorry.
They need to get to the bottom of this..
JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 5:11 AM
@ MsDarkPhoenix

Well the good thing is that Gusto moves like a zombie so he is pretty easy to avoid.
JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 5:12 AM
Anyways the perfect guy to play Namor has already been snagged by DC so I am sure Marvel will wait a while before they push forward with a Namor project.
Doopie - 7/18/2014, 5:15 AM
@Floke - lol!

I have to agree with the rest of you, I'd go with Aquaman too.

@McNyagano - you would! and you'd probably get to see it early too! you bastard!!!
MsDarkPhoenix - 7/18/2014, 5:15 AM
@Joe Have you seen him lately??? This thing is fast!!!

Doopie - 7/18/2014, 5:16 AM
There hasn't been that much semen on the screen since Deep Throat opened in 1972
mgeoff88 - 7/18/2014, 5:19 AM
So Marvel Studios pretty much owns the rights to Namor? That's good to hear.

I'm not really a Namor fan, but it's just good to know that the rights to Namor are with Marvel Studios.
SuperCat - 7/18/2014, 5:21 AM
Love both Namor and Aquaman.

JoeMomma29 - 7/18/2014, 5:21 AM
@ DarkPhoenix

Wow that is a upgrade from his last piece of transportation.......

SuperCat - 7/18/2014, 5:27 AM
AstonishingArachnid - 7/18/2014, 5:30 AM
I would prefer Namor to show up in a Black Panther movie. Maybe have a sequel centred around the Wakanda/Atlantis War.
Ragnaroknroll - 7/18/2014, 5:32 AM
This is great news to me. I've tried getting into Aquaman but Subbie wins for me hands down. Also this opens up lots of possibilities (like the Invaders) and means there's a good chance we'll see the Illuminati (Minus Reed and Xavier of course). This makes me wonder though why Marvel are using the name Defenders for the Netflix shows. Even though they don't have Surfer they could still make a Defenders film with Strange, Hulk and Namor. They were kind of the original three anyway.

@grif: YEAH GRIF! You tell em! :/

Duuuude :P

Nubase - 7/18/2014, 5:46 AM
Aquaman wins hands down, even marvel fans would admit this, plus l don't see how they would fit namor into their MCU right now, the reason DC are bringing aquaman in is because of Wonder Women, the two of them are linked and have a big history together
