Marvel E-I-C On The Cosmic Initiative Unfolding Across The Film And Comic Book Line

Marvel E-I-C On The Cosmic Initiative Unfolding Across The Film And Comic Book Line

Marvel E-I-C Axel Alonso talks about the cosmic "renaissance" taking shape across various Marvel comic book titles and its correlation to the cosmic plans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In his weekly column over at CBR, Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso touched on a number of topics as per the norm but one item of note is his take on the relationship between the cosmic plans for various Marvel comic books and the building cosmic plans of the MCU. Specifically, Alonso addresses whether this cross medium focus is occurring as a coincidence, intentionally or concurrently. " What you're asking is really a variation on, "What came first -- the chicken or the egg?" Don't forget: The Thanos that popped up in the epilogue to "Marvel's The Avengers" -- the guy with the purple skin and dimpled chin -- looked like the Thanos comic readers know and love.

Look, when we found out about the Thanos epilog and Marvel Studios' plans for a "Guardians of the Galaxy," we decided to take advantage of both and make the cosmic universe as relevant to the core Marvel reader as anything you'd find in "Avengers," "X-Men" or "Spider-Man." So far, the response to "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Nova" has been fantastic. "Guardians" was the number one book in April. While we don't want our cosmic universe to present an aesthetic that is completely at odds with the movies, we aren't worried about matching up 100 percent."

Take note everyone who insisted that the events unfolding in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book were an indication of how the film would unfold, specifically that Iron Man 3 would include the stinger where Tony Stark heads off into space to meet-up with Star-Lord and his crew.

It's not fair how they want to muddle all their stuff together just to pander to the [frick]ing movie crowd.
GetsugaTensho22 - 5/11/2013, 12:30 AM
I'm actually very sure that in the coming weeks, The Mandarin will die, resurrect in the body of a White Man, and hire a bumbling fool as his cover, in the comics, similar to what Loki did a few years back (sort of like his Female Loki thing)
TheTaskmaster - 5/11/2013, 12:47 AM
@Getsuga if that were the case there'd be a lot more movie changes to the characters in the comics. Just because they reintroduce characters so that people who may not be aware of them before the film can read up doesn't make it pandering. If that were the case the Guardians film would be using the Marvel NOW character designs but they aren't, they're using the DnA arc designs
WYLEEJAY - 5/11/2013, 12:49 AM
I'm still surprised their actually doing a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I remember when there was rumors of Marvel going COSMIC before the Avengers came out. I thought for sure they would do a Captain Marvel movie, that would also introduce us to Carol Danvers. She would get her powers, he would sacrifice his life to save earth, then we would have Ms Marvel to join the Avengers. I'm excited for Guardians though.

NoAssemblyReqd - 5/11/2013, 3:30 AM
I picked up GotG and Nova #1 and was immediately inspired to pick up as much of the last few years' cosmic stuff as possible. It has felt like finding a huge STAR WARS movie I never knew about.

Kudos to Marvel for getting me to read comics again. My last purchase as a regular reader had been in 1989.

@ NoAssemblyReqd

you must read the following cosmic stories, you'll be blown away.

-annihilation conquest
-guardians of the galaxy 1-25
-nova 1-36 (2007-2010)
-war of kings
-realm of kings
-the thanos imperative
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/11/2013, 6:27 AM

Yup, way ahead of you. I started with the first TPB of DnA's GotG, then decided I wanted the full back story before pressing forward. So, I have been going through those books pretty much as you listed them (Most are out of print; thank goodness for digital comics). Great, HUGE stories.

ThePowerCosmic - 5/11/2013, 10:36 AM
You know I like it cosmic!

I am more excited for GOTG than Avengers 2 but not by much. I feel like GOTG is going to be the next franchise to continue after the 3 Avengers films are done. Marvel is setting up the future of the MCU. Love it....we just need the Surfer back and Galactus. Corner stones of the cosmic MCU.
CaptainProg - 5/11/2013, 1:13 PM
DioFoRio @ You know it!
WYLEEJAY - 5/11/2013, 2:17 PM
Hulk and Thor are the only ones introduced so far that can stand up to Thanos. Thor seems to be a bit toned down in power compared to the comics though.

For those that don't know,
Thanos is one of the most intelligent beings in the galaxy.
Worships death. The embodiment of death. Literally he's in love with Death.
He's stronger than the Hulk.
Wields enough energy to blow up a planet.
That's just a little bit too.
I'm sure the CBM version will be toned down a bit in power too.
RaMan - 5/11/2013, 4:17 PM
Don't forget about Drax the Destroyer.

He & Hulk can take on Thanos

RaMan - 5/11/2013, 4:27 PM

For the record Thanos is not stronger than Hulk (strength-wise)

He is more powerful and has even mentioned in Thanos' Quest that he avoids a challenge against Hulk
WYLEEJAY - 5/11/2013, 7:56 PM
Yeah depending on the writer. Theres no limit to Hulks strength. Hulks baseline strength isn't more powerful. I should of used a different example. My bad. Hulk starts off around the One Hundred Ton range. Thanos is already over it. Hulk has the potential to surpass him if he gets angry enough.
WYLEEJAY - 5/11/2013, 8:14 PM
And we don't know what version of Drax we're gonna get yet. The version in your pic was stronger and fired energy blasts. The new version in the comics is a lot weaker, and has no energy blasts. He loves his knives though!!!
RaMan - 5/11/2013, 9:37 PM

I agree with you 100%,

Drax is still Drax and is powerful (energy blast or not) and will be nice to see what he is capable on the big screen.

And as for Hulk well,..he is Hulk :)
SpainAvenger - 5/12/2013, 1:33 AM
Marvel is winning, bitchas!!!
