The Marvel Cinematic Universe Becomes the Tenth Highest-Grossing Franchise of All Time!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Becomes the Tenth Highest-Grossing Franchise of All Time!

Marvel's massive film project has joined the ranks of the greatest film franchises of all time!

According to BoxOfficeMojo, the Marvel Cinematic Univese (referred to On BOM as the 'Avengers' franchise, and on Wikipedia as the MCU itself) has raked in enough money to enter the Top Ten list of Franchises, with a current total of $2,267,766,369, just 230 million behind the famous Spider-Man trilogy, which will gain a new addition next year with the highly-anticipated Amazing Spider-Man.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe also currently has, out of the top ten list, the second highest average gross per film, behind Spider-Man, and ahead of Batman.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's next installment is The Avengers, which comes out May 4th, 2012.

I find it funny that the most hated MCU film is the most financially successful. LOL
But I'm sure Avengers will beat that without a problem. ;D
SudsMerrick - 9/18/2011, 11:01 AM
At the frequency that they put out interconnecting films this has the power to beat out the combined Bond and Potter T.W.B. within 4-6 years. Marvel's business model is unique and I can't wait to see how things go. So far all 5 films have been successful and I don't see Avengers failing but having Disney behind them really helps if they ever had a flop that detered people for a few years.
marvel72 - 9/18/2011, 11:13 AM
great news for the marvel cinematic universe franchise,it'll just get bigger & bigger.

avatar just needs a sequel to enter this list & then that will dominate this list.
Supes17 - 9/18/2011, 11:22 AM
Lmao if it wasn't for TDK, Batman wouldn't even be on the list:p
Supes17 - 9/18/2011, 11:23 AM
Hats off to Marvel
Neo3 - 9/18/2011, 11:31 AM
@Xenix With Avatar 2 it will be #2 and within a week of Avatar 3 release should be #1.
Neo3 - 9/18/2011, 11:35 AM
Should be another 5 Bond movies for it to over take the list. By then Avatar would have come out and be #1. Will take another 7 Bond movies to over take Avatar, that is if Avatar sequels remain the 3B-4B range. Would take a new Star Wars trilogy in 3D to over take Harry Potter.
BooYah - 9/18/2011, 11:41 AM
Cool! Go Marvel!

Avengers FTW!
JackDexx - 9/18/2011, 11:58 AM
bout to move up some too!
DELBERT - 9/18/2011, 12:07 PM
i really like most of the marvel films but i dont see how it is considered as a franchise when all its films are about separate characters but they will be together in the avengers which will be awesome but all the others on that list are about the same characters repeating in each film
Neo3 - 9/18/2011, 12:30 PM
@Delbert What about Spider-Man new actors to play the characters. Also with Bond wvery few years a new Bond. Same with Star Wars. With Marvel movies at least they are in the same Universe.
gamecreatorjj - 9/18/2011, 1:00 PM
but still below batman
gamecreatorjj - 9/18/2011, 1:09 PM
the avengers has to make what ever TDKR makes plus around 300 million more in order to surpass it,

@projectgotham well if you play by those rules, i can say take off the MCU's 2 highest grossing films and compare to spiderman, you dont remove the highest grossing films in the series, you remove, the ones closest to the average gross of the spiderman films
marvel72 - 9/18/2011, 1:34 PM
spider-man is the cbm franchise to beat 3 spider-man vs 7 batman & whats the difference batman is winning by less than $100,000,000.

@ Xenix

okay maybe not with a sequel but avatar 3 as well if they all make the same amount of money, the avatar trilogy would of gross over $8 billion.

NextHero08 - 9/18/2011, 2:58 PM
Still below Batman and those numbers dont mean too much, I mean the ENTIRE Marvel U. compared to just Batman alone who is still above them? What does that say really? Not to mention all the movies Marvel throws out the window every year, they are gonna burn out their characters faster than they can introduce them.
ROMACK - 9/18/2011, 3:27 PM
Cool news. Love to hear about the prosperity of CBMs.
Fogs - 9/18/2011, 4:00 PM
Good for Marvel. DC / Warner should take notes and after seeing these results, and start investing money and strategic efforts on developing their own superfranchises.
LucasMend - 9/18/2011, 4:05 PM
awesome news, after the avengers it should be the first or close to it :)

JordanKing - 9/18/2011, 4:05 PM
It will never end, unless something horribly wrong goes on in the superhero film world, yes more so than Green Lantern.

It's a film company, they aren't just gonna pack it in, and call it a good run. $$$ is all that matters. They'll whore out each of their franchises if they rake in the cash.

Also, Disney says hello.
Coloso - 9/18/2011, 4:08 PM
Go Marvel! It's your birthday!

Coloso - 9/18/2011, 4:12 PM
@alucard, the Avengers franchise has yet to debut and your already predicting it playing second fiddle to the Bat's? Stay tuned next year ;P
Sentrybob - 9/18/2011, 4:13 PM
its funny cause spiderman shoud be part of it
braveone - 9/18/2011, 4:15 PM
Funny how batman alone shits on everything Marvel has put out. Don't [email protected] with the batman.
cwatts22 - 9/18/2011, 4:24 PM
I don't think that this list is completely fair. All 7 Batman films should not be counted as one franchise, but as 3 (the first being the tv series based movie, then the one from the 90's, and then the Nolan series). The Lord of the Rings should also be separated (the animated, and Peter Jackson's). And, when the new spider man comes out, it should be separate. I know it really doesn't matter that much, but it was just bugging me.

Side note, @ProjectGotham, you also forgot Batman: The Movie for 7.
SCURVYDOG619 - 9/18/2011, 4:29 PM
If you combined the Spider-Man grosses with the Marvel Universe grosses-since they are all about Marvel characters, after all-all things Marvel would be outgrossing the`Star Wars saga. But once the Avengers,Dark Night Rises, and the Hobbit come out next year, these numbers are going to be seriously ridiculous....
Havok2 - 9/18/2011, 4:29 PM
I think we should all take a step back and congratulate ourselves on having three franchises in this top ten.

Especially considering Spider-Man is only a trilogy, this is a massive achievement for our comicbook community. Think of all the poor generations before us who had to endure all kinds of crap who could only dream of a day when this would happen.

Looks like we're finally taking over and I, for one, don't care who's beating just as long as we are one of the most powerful communities around today.
Coloso - 9/18/2011, 4:33 PM
Marvel keeps rubbing the proverbial salt into the WB/DC wound, ha ha! Haters gonna hate ;P

woah woah woah woah woah woah woah

Guys, this is not my batman glass

marvel72 - 9/18/2011, 4:53 PM
with the avengers, thor 2 & iron man 3 marvel studio's will be level with batman in amount of films & will surpass in box office takings.

the amazing spider-man i personally think could be the first spidey film to do a billion, shot in 3d extra dollars.
trat73 - 9/18/2011, 5:05 PM
What was the 4th Lord of the Rings movie or the 7th Star Wars?
gamecreatorjj - 9/18/2011, 5:08 PM
so many people think avengers will bring it up higher, i can see maybe surpassing spiderman, but not batman, it has to make over 300 million dollars PLUS what ever TDKR makes, it almost definitely has to break a billion, and since the highest grossing of the films is IM2 and that was not only poorly recieved but also only made around 600 million, so it has to earn half of its largest earning as well as mach the dark knight rises, assuming tdkr makes just a billion again, the avengers whould have to make 1,300,00,00 dollars to surpass it, to get into legistics, we look at numbers

baman begins made-$372,710,015
the dark knight made-$1,001,921,825
that is a 168% percent increase, if TDKR follows that, (it probably wont, but this is just speculation) it would make-$2,685,150,491
(that puts the batman franchise at-around four billion pushing it to #4)
BooYah - 9/18/2011, 5:15 PM
LMAO, you guys are arguing who's better when Batman, Marvel, and Spider-Man are at the bottom of the list.

Sorry, Shrek FTW.
ClarkKentSuperman - 9/18/2011, 5:37 PM
By the time marvel is done it will be number one!
Mechagino - 9/18/2011, 5:48 PM
And yet batman still wins. :P
gamecreatorjj - 9/18/2011, 5:59 PM
@projectgotham, 2 billion dollars, and i already said that i doubt that, but that is what math plus history tells us

also do your research avatar made over 2 billion, nearly 3 billion

so it isn't totally unlikely that TDKR could make anywhere from 1 billion to 2 billion dollars
LionPepsiJuice - 9/18/2011, 6:00 PM
"7 Batman films only out grossed 3 Spider-Man films by a pathetic 100 million hahahahahahhahahahhahahaahahahah"

you do realize that this chart shows AVERAGE gross of the franchise and not total, right? :P

why are we all arguing about this anyway? We should all be on the same team here.
LOL @BooYah haha yeah why are we all gloating when Shrek is pulverizing them all?
cwatts22 - 9/18/2011, 6:20 PM
4th LOTR was the animated movie in the 70s or 80s, 7th star wars was clone wars.
SHHH - 9/18/2011, 6:21 PM
Those Numbers Are Misleading....
gamecreatorjj - 9/18/2011, 6:33 PM
i can do the math for the mcu

ironman to iroman 2 has a 6% increase

ironman to incredible hulk has as 54% decrease

incredible hulk to ironman 2 has a 136%

ironman 2 to thor has a 27% decrease

thor to captain america has a 21% decrease

math proves: if anything people are losing interest in these movie, and if anybody(general audience wise) sees the film, math tells us it will be for ironman

i will give you 2 predictions for the avengers, only predictions (this is what math tells, im am no prophet)

with the 6% increase added to ironman 2 we have: $625,789,392
we can say that is for either ironman 3 or for avengers you pick either way, still doesnt even come close to TDK or my TDKR prediction(2 billion)

but i will give you the benifit and the upper hand, by assuming people saw hulk and said, "hey that tony guy at the end, lets see him in sequel to a movie i never saw"

so from Incredible Hulk to Ironman 2(126% increase) we have:$1,405,848,761
this does indeed top TDK but even at the best chances for avengers, a 126 % percent increase to highest grossing MCU film, it still fails to even come gross the predicted gross of TDKR(2 billon)

with the MCU's best odds the franchise will make:$3,673,615,130 which puts it at the #5 space, one space below the estimated franchise gross of the Batman films (around 4 billion)

with the realistic odds (the ironman to ironman 2 odds) the franchise will have made:
moving the MCU up to the #8 spot, 4 below the predicted batman film series gross

please dont try and argue with math, you hardly ever win
