Jason Momoa Admits He Has Not Seen Arnold's Conan:The Barbarian

Jason Momoa Admits He Has Not Seen Arnold's Conan:The Barbarian

The new Conan, Jason Momoa admits to Fandango that he has not seen Arnold Schwarzenegger's version of Conan but he plans to after seeing his.

Speaking with FandangoMovies at this years CinamaCon, Jason Momoa had quite a bit to say about the upcoming Conan:The Barbarian. He also made an almost unbelievable confession.

So this is really your first big film role and you're taking over for someone thats pretty iconic The Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger. So what does that feel like? Are you feeling a little pressure or are you excited?

I'm excited. It's an honor. I mean I love Arnold, I love his movies and it's an absolute honor to take on those shoes. Having said that, the stories that I loved when I was a child, Robert E. Howard stories, to re tell those, just to re boot this franchise, it's exciting. Especially in the sense of James Bond or Batman there's a generation out there, it came out in 82, it's time for another generation to see it. It's an honor to be that guy.

So the first one was kind of campy. Is this just a complete reinvention or did you keep a little bit?

No! No! Like I said, it's totally re imagining and re booting the franchise. I don't want to sound bad but I haven't seen it. It came out in 82. I was 3 years old. And I've never played a character, that I was going to play that has already been played. So, as an actor you want to build the character from the ground up. You don't want to be influenced by anything. You want to be influenced by the source material, the paintings.

There's such a richness. There's so many different fans. There's the Arnold fans, the Robert E. Howard fans, the Frazetta fans. So it's like, there are big shoes to fill but as an actor, I wanted my imagination and what I was hired for, to build and train to get to this character.

I look forward to seeing that but I want to see mine first. I just got to see a little bit of the 3D today and I was like, absolutely. I was stuned. It was stunning. I'm really excited to see it because I'm like fighting imaginary characters and the next thing you know, I'm like hucking myself into a stairwell. Now theres like a giant lizard, monster, kraken that's doing it. And it looks real! It's gonna be amazing.

Conan The Barbarian directed by Marcus Nispel and starring Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang and Saïd Taghmaoui is slated for release this August.

hes full of shit

and so eloquent...

"I've never played a character, that I was going to play that has already been played. "
Hawksblueyes - 4/13/2011, 9:00 AM
Hela: I had quite a bit of trouble transcribing what he said, especially that line. The entire interview reminds me of " I'm the Dude, playing a Dude, playing another Dude."

Regardless, I'm still looking forward to this film very much.
Alastair - 4/13/2011, 9:01 AM
This Movie Blows, I'm starting to get tired of remakes unless it's superheros. Theres only one Conan
DR3D - 4/13/2011, 9:03 AM
lol who cares?
HelaGood - 4/13/2011, 9:05 AM
@Hawksblueyes totally! "im a dude..." LMAO!!!
great article though...
MarvelousMarty - 4/13/2011, 9:10 AM
I watched the Arnie one last week! Darth Vader is in it too. Crap film though.
marvel72 - 4/13/2011, 9:12 AM
arnold probably won't watch momoa conan either,so it balances out.
VictorHugo - 4/13/2011, 9:14 AM
Momoa should be introduced to the technological wonders of the VHS TAPES!
MoumentheBatman - 4/13/2011, 9:19 AM
Aside from the interview... good for him not to watch Arnold's movie so he wouldnt try immitating him.

Actually I consider anyone who has missed any of Schwarzenegger's movies as damn lucky!! I donno how the hell did I ever bear to watch any of that talentless hack's crap as a kid. The guy cant act to save his life.. his English is horrible and the only decent thing he's ever done was Terminator and any dumb-ass half-talented actor could have done it even better (the CGI Arnold in Terminator Salvation was better).

If there's been once good thing to Arnold being governer it's that he stopped making movies.
jeremySee - 4/13/2011, 9:21 AM
Certain things one should just not admit to...what an @$$.

That being said, the mountain of skulls poster is wicked, and Stephen Lang is going to be the best part of the film.

But there is only one Conan the Cimmerian.
EastcoastAvenger - 4/13/2011, 9:22 AM
As of right now I am not getting that "this movie is gonna be a hit" vibe!
selinakyle - 4/13/2011, 9:23 AM
mmmm Jason Momoa...mmm
THORION76 - 4/13/2011, 9:25 AM
That's very weird i watched alot of movies that were before my time.
EastcoastAvenger - 4/13/2011, 9:26 AM
Good point Thorion!
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/13/2011, 9:28 AM
I wasnt even born in that time and still i have seen it!;) I´ve born 87 so if i remember right i was 8 when i saw it the first time! And i loved it!;D
Looking forward this new one! Hope its good!

Its totally stupid to compare this to Arnie´s movie cause they are both so different! This new one is totally fresh take of the character and im happy they are doing it!
Only thing im worry about is Momoa´s acting (because i havent seen him act before) and Marcus Nispel´s directing skills (because he made Pathfinder and the remake to Friday The 13th)! But like i said i hope the movie delivers!:)
VictorHugo - 4/13/2011, 9:29 AM
EastcoastAvenger: Indeed, this movie has a "Kull" vibe, that one with Kevin Sorbo. Smells like a direct-to-DVD release.
SanDevil77 - 4/13/2011, 9:33 AM
conan came out before i was even born but have fond memories of watchin it with my father when i was really young. its a classic nd ill always remember it that way. me nd my dad have had a discussion about the new one nd he said he'll always refer to arnold as conan but we will watch the new one together to see how it really is.

WOW!!!! LAME!!!
ThaMessenger07 - 4/13/2011, 9:59 AM
I loved the Original films and I have watched them many times. Mind you I was born in 88.

Truth is, It doesn't matter if he watched those films. The movie was nothing like the books and thus nothing like what this upcoming movie is going to be. He said that he was a fan of Arnold and all the movies he said that he enjoyed of Arnies were in the 90's. That was his era of film awareness. Clearly!

As long as he read the old books and took his reference from the TRUE source. I could care less if he stood outside pissing on Arnies Conan Film VHS, DVD & Blue Ray, then lit it on fire and started a Drum-circle around the glorious flame.

Momoa! Make a great Conan movie! That is all I ask! `mm/
Hawksblueyes - 4/13/2011, 9:59 AM
Witty said it best. There's no reason for him not to have seen Conan, especially if he is a huge Arnold fan like he has claimed to be in many interviews. There's no need to bullshit us, just play the part and do it well.

That being said, I really think he'll do well in the film.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/13/2011, 10:00 AM
Still i hope they use the same theme!;) Nothing is more awesome than this!
Talontd - 4/13/2011, 10:01 AM
@EvilEye & the rest of the morons

The only reason he didn't saw the movie is because he doesn't give a sh!t. Which means he will play this character horrible because he doesn't care about anything except his payroll. Bring on the reboot!
EvilEye - 4/13/2011, 9:13 AM

Did you guys even read the article??? He said...

"I look forward to seeing that but I want to see mine first."

"You don't want to be influenced by anything. You want to be influenced by the source material, the paintings."

Arnold's Conan movies ARE NOT THE SOURCE MATERIAL!!! He wanted all the influences for his character to come from Howard's books! Isn't that what we always want?

I miss all the posters that used to be on this site, you new lot are a bunch of twits.
Spock - 4/13/2011, 10:01 AM
@ yossarian so was i Bud! But iam still looking forward to see it!
Zounds - 4/13/2011, 10:02 AM
@chuckg313. Hah! I was just about to comment on that. The guy has waaaaaaay too much self love.

@SuperArgo. LMAO

So let me guess this straight, he's referenced Howard, Frazetta, "influences" and has never seen the film? He's never come across Poledouris's (sp?) score?

I mean, how quotable is Milius's film!? Wouldnt you expect a couple? "What is best in life?" and Conan's response. "The Riddle Of Steel"

Anyway, I'll remain open minded. I'm not expecting a better film than the first, because Arnold's performance stiff as it may have been remains iconic. James Earl Jones's portrayal has to be regarded as one of the very best villans in a CBM and that simply isnt going to be bettered by Stephen Lang as good an actor as he is...

Just wish Momoa didn't come across as so "empty" as he seems to be in this interview. Not exactly faith inducing, but...we'll see.

I mean it can't be worse than Conan The Destroyer, can it?

HarrisonBergeron - 4/13/2011, 10:05 AM
I've never seen Conan, collectively I think I may have seen 5 minutes of it in my entire life.

To those saying that this shows that he is not doing his homework- this movie is based on the source material, not the Arnold movie, you are putting him down for not doing the homework for a class he isn't enrolled in. This is like putting down the next Robin for not watching the Chris O'Donnel movie.
Richardness - 4/13/2011, 10:08 AM
-7 and I've seen it
GUNSMITH - 4/13/2011, 10:18 AM
Hawksblueyes - 4/13/2011, 10:24 AM
Harrison: I am not saying he isn't doing his homework at all. I am also not saying that the movie won't be good or that I think he won't kick ass in the role.

I'm saying he is a liar. Many times now, he has claimed to be a huge fan of Howard's stories and Arnold's movies since he was a child. Being a huge fan of both would unquestionably and inevitably lead you to the point that the two intersect at some point in your life. That point would be the first Conan film. I'm saying that there is no way he can be such a huge fan of both the books and the star of the first film and never bothered to watch it. He is lying about something or a number of things and there is no reason for it. All he has to do is act like Conan.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/13/2011, 10:25 AM
When they were making Conan The Barbarian back in the day Arnie was just a bodybuilder and not a big star or great actor so i guess Momoa can only improve from that performance or stay in the same class?;)
VictorHugo - 4/13/2011, 10:33 AM
Well, Conan just need to frown and say "Argh" and "Crom", just like the Hulk, in Sal Buscema style.
Dumegg - 4/13/2011, 10:36 AM
he's never seen the original conan?...he must be the
only human on the planet who hasn't.
ThaMessenger07 - 4/13/2011, 10:37 AM
@ VictorHugo: No he doesn't lol he needs to be a vocal warrior that one day becomes a king.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/13/2011, 10:50 AM
ThaMessenger07@ Agree ;)
GUNSMITH - 4/13/2011, 11:00 AM
ThaMessenger07 - 4/13/2011, 11:30 AM

@ Alex: Yes sir :)
chochi73 - 4/13/2011, 11:41 AM
When this movie is release and sucks ass, like we all know it will, then I'll believe he didn't see it. He's too anemic to play a bad-ass like Conan. He would have been better off playing Conan's dumb side kick Malak.
