CONSTANTINE: Lucy Griffiths Exits; New Character 'Zed' To be Written In

Although True Blood's Lucy Griffiths played Liv in the Constantine pilot, NBC have decided to write her out of future episodes, and bring in a character that should be familiar to Hellblazer fans to replace her. More past the jump..

Apparently wanting to go in a "different direction", the Constantine showrunners have decided to write the character of Liv out of the series -- and of course that also means saying goodbye to the actress that played her in the pilot episode, Lucy Griffiths. Instead of Liv, they're bringing in a character called Zed, who in the DC/vertigo comic books was originally John's lover before reappearing as a pagan sorceress. According to THR, "she will appear in an early episode of the series, with additional characters from Hellblazer and the occult DC universe to be introduced later. Zed will, however, be the first to appear." More occult DC characters eh? That should be interesting -- Zatanna? Swamp Thing? Etrigan perhaps? Anyway, it's a shame about Griffiths but Zed is a cool character, so it just remains to see who they'll be getting to play her.

Hellblazer comics had a trend of killing off supporting characters or sending them away. It would be interesting if the show did that as well.
SpiderFraud - 7/10/2014, 3:44 PM
I'm kinda glad, for some reason I felt she was going to become annoying in the future.
Vegeta - 7/10/2014, 3:44 PM
Well, that's a shame. I liked Liv. I'm sure the show will get on fine without her though.
koolaidbag - 7/10/2014, 3:50 PM
Wait, was she the girl who Constantine has the pepper spray interaction with in the pilot? If so this is very cool, I could tell they wanted her to be a mainstay, glad for the change of heart.
LEEE777 - 7/10/2014, 3:56 PM
That's shit news shes a great actress (Robin Hood), damn I hate supporting cast but she would would have worked.

Dumb NBC dumb!
WayneCEO1 - 7/10/2014, 3:56 PM
Zatanna or bust!
MarkJulian - 7/10/2014, 3:58 PM
Zed's cool but we're all waiting for Zatana and Zatara.
MrBlackJack - 7/10/2014, 4:01 PM
I thought she was okay, and as the series progressed Lucy would have grown into the character very well. Oh well, at least they're making this choice early on and not midseason.
Humperdink - 7/10/2014, 4:04 PM
Huh. Well that's odd.
I wonder why they did that?

Maybe she leaked the pilot by accident somehow and they found!
McGee - 7/10/2014, 4:04 PM
Humperdink - 7/10/2014, 4:05 PM
Swamp Thing? Etrigan perhaps?

Ror...don't tease me like that.
Pasto - 7/10/2014, 4:05 PM
Wait, didn't the show revolve around her?
MrBlackJack - 7/10/2014, 4:08 PM
Lol, I was thinking the same thing Pasto.
marvel72 - 7/10/2014, 4:09 PM
i had mixed feelings over the pilot,it was good in places, one really nice easter egg,i'll give the show a chance.

Ep. 1: "I've been told by your father to protect you. I'll protect you and will train you to protect yourself"

Ep. 2: "[frick] you bitch, I'm a confirmed bachelor."
Neonzel - 7/10/2014, 4:12 PM
They had something that looked like the Swamp Thing in the pilot.

Pasto - 7/10/2014, 4:12 PM
Lol it seems thats the route their taking the show.
CommanderShepard - 7/10/2014, 4:12 PM

Wait, didn't the show revolve around her?

Yes and no.

She was sort of the odd-fish central figure that the experienced Constantine character could bounce things off of and explain the occult world he lives in to the audience.

It also helps to develop the Constantine character to have an inexperienced rookie under his wing that needs his expertise.

Basically she represented the audience going in blind to the occult world based around Constantine, and in that sense she was a set up to be on of the major characters for the show.

She's supposed to be the audience-relatable Luke Skywalker to Constantine's Obi Wan Kenobi.

That's the basic formula, so it's odd they suddenly ditched it.
I suppose Zed will now fit those shoes.
JamesMan - 7/10/2014, 4:19 PM
Whatever, this show is about Constantine.
Mothchild - 7/10/2014, 4:19 PM
@ Neonzel I totes missed that

@ McGee That is the true Zatanna. If anyone says different I'm going to threaten them with homoerotica

Jason Blood and Etrigan would be amazing. I didn't think Liv was played that well by the actress so I don't mind.

ComicsBornAndBred - 7/10/2014, 4:20 PM
Damn that's cold. She need a new job
batz11 - 7/10/2014, 4:24 PM
It's DC, who cares ;)
Shit, gotta watch that pilot still...
CherryBomb - 7/10/2014, 4:26 PM
Aww that's a shame!
I like her as an actress, I haven't seen her in enough to say "wow she's amazing" but she looked as though she suited the character from what I've seen.

I guess it's cool that "anything goes" and they aren't having the love interest from the beginning be constantly around. I do hope they write a cool ending for her character.

EhMaybeSays - 7/10/2014, 4:26 PM
I actually liked her, oh well.
Pasto - 7/10/2014, 4:28 PM
Lets hope so. Because if not this show will have the stigma of not knowing what it is doing.
grif - 7/10/2014, 4:30 PM
zeds dead baby. zeds dead.
aRandomSinisterClone - 7/10/2014, 4:34 PM
please someone figure out how to get Etrigan onscreen. so someone can said how annoying the rhyming is, like the flashpoint movie did. or at the least Jason Blood
aRandomSinisterClone - 7/10/2014, 4:35 PM
^grif, thanks for getting that whole scene stuck in my head now haha. not a motorcycle baby, its a chopper.
seamuskeaneart - 7/10/2014, 4:44 PM
Thank God, I thought She Was By Far The Weakest Part Of The Pilot
McGee - 7/10/2014, 4:50 PM

RichardGrayson - 7/10/2014, 5:01 PM
this is great news about the occult part of the DC universe

give me Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Dr. Fate, The Spectre, Deadman, and Etrigan
soforizo - 7/10/2014, 5:10 PM
That's messed up. I thought she was weak in the trailer, but apparently decent in the pilot.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/10/2014, 5:13 PM
I guess I'll be stocking up on Hellblazer AND Flash comics at Comic-Con this year. Don't wanna go into these shows totally blind.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/10/2014, 5:15 PM
I didn't like her character all too much in the pilot. There were almost too many questions from her and I know it's like that to establish the occult and everything but it was just like I'm getting to know too much too early on.
SuperPickle - 7/10/2014, 5:24 PM
I haven't seen the pilot, but the impression I got from the trailers is that she was a Rachel Weisz clone. Weisz played a character with the same function in the Keanu movie. Same function to the plot, looked like her, sounded like her. Probably best to brush her off. Showed the trailers to several friends, most of whom weren't familiar with the comics, and a few of them asked me why "that chick" was in it if it's different from the movie.

I dunno. Maybe that's it.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 5:24 PM
wow, this is very surprising, i thought she was fine in the pilot but she was said to be uniquely important and was set up to be a the main female lead of the show and she kind of set up what would have been the formula of the show..hmm...very interesting
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 5:32 PM
this is from ew

Constantine executive producer Daniel Cerone says that the show is replacing the wet-behind-the-ears Liv with the more experienced and feisty Zed to give its main demon hunter a more effective partner/foil. “When you put a wide-eyed innocent into that world, she’s just very reactive,” he tells EW. “The nice thing about Swamp Thing, when he first teamed up with Constantine, was that Swamp Thing had abilities, Swamp Thing had skills. Constantine needed those skills. One of the coolest things about Constantine he doesn’t have any ‘powers.’ He came out of a time with all these superheroes with their garish colors and flashy powers, and he just comes out with a rumpled coat, wearing browns and greys, and he just knows a lot magic and spells, but it’s all knowledge-based. Anything he can do is based in knowledge and his own studying. Zed is actually one of the first women Constantine meets in the comic books, and she has various psychic powers. We felt ultimately she’s going to service the first season better as someone to pair Constantine up with. She can get in his face a little bit and have some of her own realizations and skills and really push him. But if whoever Constantine is working with is constantly on her heels, that just wouldn’t service the show really well.”

the quote i posted has me more sure and i understand why they have done what they have will be interesting as to how they write her out of the show
