No Smoking Allowed! John Constantine Will Need A Nicotine Patch In CONSTANTINE

No Smoking Allowed! John Constantine Will Need A Nicotine Patch In CONSTANTINE

Producer David Goyer (Man of Steel) revealed not too long ago that they were negotiating with NBC about allowing John Constantine to smoke in the series, but the director of the pilot - Game of Thrones Neil Marshall - has now confirmed that it won't be happening. Read on for details!

In a recent interview with Collider, Constantine director Neil Marshall was asked about whether or not Matt Ryan's John Constantine will be allowed to smoke in the series, and the answer might just disappoint some fans! "No we’re not. It’s the one thing, a compromise I guess. On network it’s the one thing you can’t smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We’re working around that. We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We’ll see." As you may already know, the comic book version of Constantine suffers from lung cancer, but actually rids himself of it after selling his soul to two demons and tricking them into curing him. It's feasible then that this series takes place after those events, hence why he's no longer a smoker.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't seem like that big of a deal, especially when the trailer showed that they've got so many other aspects of the character's personality right. Either way, Marshall promised that NBC won't be holding back in other areas! "Hannibal is on NBC, and that’s pretty dark and disturbing. Whatever the regulations are, you can be as dark and disturbing as you want and we’re going to go in that direction. The intention is to be as dark and scary as possible with the show. And that was our whole kind of plan going in, to make it scary. So we’re going to explore all kinds of things. But the smoking is very frustrating. Who knows where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go? There’s still lots of options." What do you guys think about these comments? Does John NEED to smoke?

Doopie - 6/29/2014, 4:05 AM
Really thought they'd have the balls to do it...guess not

When Hollywood has become our moral compass, you know things are in the shitter here in the US...

If they don't even have the courage to give him something to smoke, I have worries for what they are actually going to do.

Jollem - 6/29/2014, 4:21 AM
maybe america thinks having john smoke will cause children to smoke? just like how violent video games cause children to commit violent acts. with that kind of thinking, ya'd think america would be one giant, anarchistic bloodbath-seeing as how well the grand theft auto games sell
Jollem - 6/29/2014, 4:22 AM

don't blame the network blame the whining parents that don't want to do their job and actually raise their kids.

I was just talking about this the other day! I didn't notice him smoking in either trailer. I shared this observation with my brother and he didn't totally believe me at first but he researched it and it was true and this confirms it. Not a HUGE deal really. Could be hilarious with him all frustrated chewing gum and using patches while fighting demons. GAH! I can't waaaaasiiiit!!!
SuperCat - 6/29/2014, 4:35 AM
Don't think it's a big deal. The show still looks amazing.
Jollem - 6/29/2014, 4:35 AM
didja know marvel's had a smoking ban in their comics for over a decade now?
Vegeta - 6/29/2014, 4:37 AM
There's a lot more to the character than just smoking. Sure, it kind of sucks he won't smoke, but considering how much they have got right, it's a small compromise.
ComicsBornAndBred - 6/29/2014, 4:38 AM
It's a let down somewhat but I'm still impressed and excited with whä I've seen. Can't wait. Maybe the show could've been on Netflix or a premium channel with less restrictions but whatev. I'm grateful it's even coming to tv

Marqy - 6/29/2014, 4:43 AM
ABsolutely ridiculous ... The netwroks in my country arent so uptight about this.

But I have to say I expected this to happen when I heard about the show ... stupid ass non-sensical rules. @Jimoakley said it best I think :).

On the topic of smoking ... I recently quit smoking after almost 10 years (9 I think it was). Its going to be 2 months now on 2.7.2014 (the second of July, Im european :)). The reason Why Im mentioning this is because it was after I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier when I said "Ok, [frick] it, Imma do this" to be more healthy like Cap and a "specimen" :D.

Art reflects the world. And right now in this world people smoke. Entertainment that says otherwise is a poor reflection of our world and basically invalid as art.

The entertainment and news media don't quite understand why they exist. They don't exist to "educate" or to curb thought or to influence behavior.
That is something they claim responsible artists and journalists should do but in fact they simply want power over people.

They all think they are better than everyone else and they think as if they are some sort of superior beings trying to help the little people out by brainwashing them with their liberal ideology.

People should trace back to the root of the opinions and ideology they have. If it traces back to the media then it's total bullshit.

They preachers of political correctness are hypocrites who do as they will but expect all of us to worship them and practice what they preach.

Ceejay - 6/29/2014, 4:56 AM
This would actually make sense IF smoking was banned from all public areas including streets. But the fact that kids see people smoking everyday on the streets and everywhere else makes such a rule utterly pointless.

I can understand a Network wanting to do "Their bit" but a show made for mature audiences should not be hindered by laws appropriate for shows presented for younger audiences.

Good. I'm a huge Constantine fan, read the Hellblazer stuff. Also an ex-smoker so can speak as both and I'm happy they won't have him smoking. We shouldn't be promoting smoking period in any way shape or form. It's an embarrassment that we even all smoking to be condoned period as a species, its a disgusting addiction that makes people stink and rots their internal organs. People who support it are complete idiots...
Bl00dwerK - 6/29/2014, 4:59 AM
Not smoking will be the least of this show's problems...
Liverpool4life - 6/29/2014, 5:02 AM
Smoking shouldn't make or break a story, but whiners will whine about it.
QuestionDAnswer - 6/29/2014, 5:02 AM
Then why have it on network tv you dumb f*cks? Why not HBO? Why is this generation so obsessed with health? Live a little you boring motherf*ckers!

I guess he's going to be chewing a lot nicotine gum.
Vegeta - 6/29/2014, 5:09 AM

^ This!

Madame Xanudu needs to be on the show. The interactions between her and Constantine are [frick]ing gold!

Klone - 6/29/2014, 5:19 AM
Smoking is still a trademark of the character you fools, same as Superman's cape and symbol. Some apologists here, pfft.

Anyways, who said they had to glorify his smoking. They could show it taking a toll on his health though him not caring at all or him simply smoking and it being neither glorified or vilified.
Jollem - 6/29/2014, 5:20 AM
@BatManiac - give 'em a lil' bit and they'll dominate the movie world as well
Klone - 6/29/2014, 5:20 AM
You ruined that post with Grant and that screaming idiot.
Klone - 6/29/2014, 5:21 AM
It's not significant, though it is a trademark of such a character. I'm more annoyed at the reason they are simply banning the smoking. Death, murder, torture and all these horrible things are fine, oh but smoking and sex? EVIL! Always annoyed me.
Vegeta - 6/29/2014, 5:28 AM
You ruined this thread with your presence Klone.
