EDITORIAL: Why DAREDEVIL Is The Marvel Studios Property Most Deserving Of A Movie

EDITORIAL: Why DAREDEVIL Is The Marvel Studios Property Most Deserving Of A Movie

Marvel Studios have yet to adapt many of the properties they hold the rights to, but as much as the likes of Black Panther and Doctor Strange deserve their own movies, I believe that it's The Man Without Fear who is most worthy of getting another chance on the big screen. Hit the jump for more...

Last year, Marvel Studios finally regained the rights to Daredevil. However, it appeared at the time that he wasn’t a character they were desperate to get their hands on again. As you may remember, they attempted to come to a deal with 20th Century Fox which would allow that studio to keep The Man Without Fear IF they gave Marvel Galactus and Silver Surfer. Well, Fox clearly weren’t that keen on him either, and despite the fact that they already had a movie in the very early stages of development, they allowed the rights to revert. We’ve since heard very little about Marvel’s plans for Matt Murdock, with Kevin Feige only confirming that they now hold the rights and Joe Quesada saying that they are "really excited" to have him back. So, what’s next for Daredevil?

A lot of fans seem to think that Daredevil belongs on the small screen, and to be fair, I can see where they’re coming from. Like Green Arrow, he’s the kind of character who could easily be portrayed with a television budget, while his rogues gallery would lend themselves well to the kind of low-fi reimagining that worked so well for the likes of the Dark Archer and Deathstroke on Arrow. The fact that he’s a lawyer would also lead to some interesting stories on the non-costume side of things, but as good as all this sounds (as against the idea of a TV series as I am, I actually find myself liking the sound of it as I write this...), I truly believe that Daredevil’s place is on the big screen.

As bad as the 2003 movie was, it at least showed that the character has some potential. As controversial as this may be with fans of the Miller/Bendis/Brubaker runs (which, I can assure you, I most definitely count myself a part of), the right direction to take for Marvel Studios would be a tone on par with that of Mark Waid’s Eisner Award winning series. As great as the dark and gritty Daredevil runs were, that doesn’t necessarily fit in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so focusing on the humorous side of the character seems like a sensible way to go, especially in terms of appealing to the general audience. Now, that’s not to say that they should turn the character into a wisecracking Spider-Man knock off, but Waid has managed to find the right balance of humour and drama while also at least keeping some of Matt’s darker personality traits present (sort of like how Marvel Studios have handled Tony Stark’s alcoholism in his movie franchise).

While Daredevil doesn’t necessarily fit into Marvel’s big plans for 2018 (an apparent Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover as the two teams battle Thanos), there’s one thing sorely missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point. A street level superhero with a truly human perspective. We have a billionaire. We have an Asgardian God. We have a man out of time. We have...well, you get the point! Doctor Strange introduces us to magic, while Black Panther is another worthy addition to the roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Daredevil meanwhile opens the door to a whole new world of superheroes. Luke Cage and Iron Fist would fit nicely into that world and adapting heroes like these could mean that we get another superhero team franchise down the line; The Defenders! By 2018, the likes of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson will all be facing the ends of their contracts to Marvel. After spending nearly a decade in Marvel movies, these actors will inevitably want to move on.

Whether Marvel takes the James Bond route and recasts or simply reboots is an argument for another day, but it’s vital that they have other franchises to fall back on. After all, not everything has to be Thanos related! Of all the characters that they hold the rights to, the Man Without Fear is easily as deserving of a movie as the likes of Captain America and Thor, and arguably even more than a character like Ant-Man. While I can understand their reluctance to revisit the world of Daredevil after the failure of his last big screen adaptation, a strong story and the right cast (something Marvel have shown that they have a great handle on) could easily result in yet another huge blockbuster franchise for them. Mark Waid’s superb swashbuckling Daredevil has shown that there exists a fresh and unique take out there on the character some consider a poor man’s Batman, and now is the time for Marvel to take advantage and give us the Daredevil movie we all want and deserve. What do you guys think?

Agreed. The Man Without Fear needs another chance to shine on the big screen, and show why he's one of comic's best characters.
anthonyEstark - 9/10/2013, 11:39 AM
Yeah, Daredevil needs a reboot. Go Josh Wilding!

I'm all for a TV series. In fact it could pick up where the movie left off. The movie introduced us to all the main players, so no need to rehash a origin story again. I just re read the Bendis run again recently and it reads like an HBO TV series. I'd love for the 2nd or 3rd season to actually follow this storyline.

The director's cut of the 2003 film is not that bad and financially it made some profit.

Cut the see-saw scene and the Nickelback/Nu-Metal parts of the soundtrack and it automatically increases in quality by 25%.

ItsNotASchooner - 9/10/2013, 11:42 AM
I actually think he could be greatly utilized earlier simply as a lawyer, and kind of get his face out there, then later on have him put on the suit. Imagine if Steve Rogers was sued for some reason and Matt Murdock was his lawyer.
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 11:42 AM
Soo umm was DarDevil 2003 a flop?

For a movie that cost 78 million to make and made 102 million domestically... that sounds like it did pretty good for a movie that came out in Feb. of 2003

I dont see why Marvel studios want go ahead and make another one
FerFogs - 9/10/2013, 11:43 AM
1. Daredevil Man without Fear
2. Born Again
GetsugaTensho22 - 9/10/2013, 11:45 AM
Geez, you REALLY want that 500 dollars, don't you Josh.
retr0g0dfather - 9/10/2013, 11:47 AM
I liked DAREDEVIL, it wasn't that bad. It didn't need ELECTRA in it.
KrazyForKomix - 9/10/2013, 11:47 AM
Disney owns it. WHEN and IF it's done, It'll be light and airy. No grit. Can't make a ride out of that.

Much as I love the cosmic direction Marvel is going, I would love to a more down to Earth group of movies as well: Daredevil, Punisher, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, etc.

MarvelSquadie - 9/10/2013, 11:51 AM
Marvel Knights Movie! Cram them all in 1 movie. Or have them appear in Agents of SHIELD.
SAZMD - 9/10/2013, 11:51 AM
Say, you know who would make a great Daredevil...
CPBuff22 - 9/10/2013, 11:56 AM
I just watched Daredevil again yesterday. The Unedited Directors Cut is a really good movie. It is on par with the Nolan Batman movies as far as tone and delivers a compelling story with some fantastic acting. They did a great job casting the Villains in this film. Kingpin & Bullseye both came across as very credible threats.

I would love Marvel to give us a new Daredevil movie. I would also love to see a new Blade film. Those are at the top of my wish list.
HAILHYDRA - 9/10/2013, 11:56 AM
Until the MCU gets to the New Avengers part of their timeline I think Daredevil is best left on the sideline. Maybe a reboot of the character after Avengers 3 leading into a New Avengers movie would be cool. But I don't think that Daredevil really fits into the current line up of Avengers. I would much rather see Marvel stick to characters that are primarily associated as being members of the Avengers.
ralfinader - 9/10/2013, 11:56 AM
Jesus, this is a shit-ton of editorials the last week or so.

Anyways, DD is better suited for a TV show than a film. Low FX powers, same with his rogues. Save street level for TV, and use the big screen to show off the heroes with more visually dynamic powers that demand a bigger budget.
SimZimuk - 9/10/2013, 11:58 AM
I actually have spoken about a NEW Daredevil movie, I want this to happen, check it out on my YouTube page folks
gambgel - 9/10/2013, 11:59 AM
maybe now that he ended the Nolan trilogy, Christian Bale could play Daredevil next, lol
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 11:59 AM

I rather see the opposite of what ya said Black Panther and Dr Strange needs a chance before a Daredevil reboot

Also it would great to do a Daredevil reboot and have Punisher guest star, since we know Marvel Studios wouldnt do a Punisher(cause of the R rating)
HAILHYDRA - 9/10/2013, 12:01 PM
Using Luke Cage, Matt Murdock, and Jessica Drew to headline a New Avengers movie where Cap recruits them to round up some of the old MCU villains (Abomination, The Leader, Killian) that have escaped would make for a cool movie.
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 12:02 PM

that wahst ive been saying, the Daredevil Directors Cut was pretty badass, it has it's flaws(some of the flaws was cut out of the directors cut). But it turn out being a decent dark gritty comic book movie
charlie2094 - 9/10/2013, 12:03 PM
Definitely agree with this!

Bendis' run on Daredevil is my favourite comic run to date and Waid's current run is fantastic too! Really hope we see a Daredevil film soon, though don't imagine it'll be til after Avengers 3.

Not sure about a TV show, but Arrow managed to do pretty well with action in that, so maybe. Villains like Bullseye and Kingpin could remain unchanged so could maybe work. Could see a TV show being good, just get a great actor as Daredevil so that he can still appear in the main MCU without being overshadowed

Has all the elements of a great show, him being a lawyer, his relationship with Foggy and Karen, being set in a less "fantastical" part of the Marvel Universe, many villains who don't require cgi. Long as the action is done justice, and we get movie quality acting, then it should be ok!
GliderMan - 9/10/2013, 12:06 PM
I want a Daredevil movie but not him in Avengers.
SageMode - 9/10/2013, 12:06 PM
Drew Goddard to direct, Feige to produce, Philip Winchester in the title role, Purple Man as the main villain, Marco Beltrami for the music score.

Wah [frick]in Lah!!!!!
JoeMomma29 - 9/10/2013, 12:07 PM

Oh my!
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 12:08 PM

lol soo u telling me u wouldnt wanna see Marvel's first movie that deals with magic and sorcery. A black superhero that takes us to basically another world(Wakanda) of the Marvel universe and also a very recognized avenger.

But a movie that already had a chance already in the movie field, about a vigilante that fights crime in a costume in New York

*raisie eyebrow*
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 12:08 PM
Morbius - 9/10/2013, 12:10 PM
I agree he needs a new movie and Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling should play him.
novaprime - 9/10/2013, 12:11 PM
I Would Love To see This!!!! Joel Edgerton for Daredevil. JASON STATHAM/ OR Ben Foster FOR BULLS EYE!. BRYAN CRASTON FOR KINGPIN
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 12:12 PM

I could see a DareDevil Tv show happening, honestly that would be better than Agents of Shield. And since Arrow has become a Huge success, that mean there is a huge audience that wanna see stuff like this.

DareDevil could be more like Law and Order with superhero and super villains in it
FoxForce5 - 9/10/2013, 12:14 PM
I'm also on the side of thinking Daredevil belongs on TV. I say, introduce Matt Murdock as a lawyer representing some low-level, super powered individual on Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D where nobody knows that he's the Man Without Fear, then spin that off to a DD TV show, sort of how they plan to introduce The Flash on Arrow only here, DD can then pop up in the movies as well.
Greengo - 9/10/2013, 12:15 PM
You guys complaining about editorials better get used to it.

It's only September 10th.

And I haven't done mine yet : )
JoJo1982 - 9/10/2013, 12:24 PM
I think what was said early is right

Alot of the street level superheroes would be great on TV

Marvel Studios already Rule the big screen, why cant they try and rule the small screen too

Heroes for Hire
Put Punisher on Starz, HBO, or Showtime

yall cant tell me, that they want do good
EdgyOutsider - 9/10/2013, 12:26 PM
DareDevil is definitely one of the more deserving heroes. But, he just doesn't fit right now. Ant-Man is timing cause its been in the works for nearly a decade, it's a stand alone and he is also an Avenger despite being a stand alone movie. Doctor Strange opens the door for the more mystical and supernatural heroes (Ghost Rider for Phase Four or Five!). Black Panther opens the door for more diversity. Guardians of the Galaxy for the more cosmic characters. Sure, DareDevil opens the door for more street level heroes but I don't think we will see those heroes until after Avengers 3. Phase Five? Maybe Six? This is just my logic.
FoxForce5 - 9/10/2013, 12:26 PM
And, my choice to play Matt Murdock, Michael C. Hall:

Now that he's done with Dexter, I think this would be perfect and he can still hold his own against the likes of the Avengers cast such as RDJ and SLJ and the rest of them...

I rest my case.
JoeMomma29 - 9/10/2013, 12:27 PM

What the hell, those are the type of games that Gusto likes to play in private.
