Marvel Courting Johnny Depp For DOCTOR STRANGE?

Marvel Courting Johnny Depp For DOCTOR STRANGE?

After years of being suggested for the Sorcerer Supreme, it appears Johnny Depp and Marvel Studios have taken steps to make the casting become an actuality... at least according to Latino Review!

On the heels of Marvel nabbing two-time Oscar-winner Michael Douglas for Ant-Man, the folks over at Latino Review reckon they know another big acting veteran on the studio's radar for another one of their upcoming “Phase Three” movies. “A well-connected source informed me tonight that Johnny Depp has taken a meeting with Marvel to discuss taking on the role of Dr. Strange,” the site reveals. The report further notes that the three-time Oscar-nominated Pirates of the Caribbean franchise star is very much a comic book fan and is keen on joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As many Comic Book Movie readers who look through the fan-fic section may know, Johnny Depp and a handful of other actors has been a longtime fan-favorite for the role of Dr. Stephen Strange. And Latino Review's sources suggest it's that connection that brought Marvel and Depp's camp together. Of course, actors meet with movie studios all the time and negotiations don't always prosper. Therefore, the prospective casting is far from a done deal, however, Johnny Depp playing the Sorcerer Supreme is now a definite possibility. The film doesn't have a director or a release date, but Doctor Strange is believed to nab the May 6, 2016 slot that Marvel/Disney claimed last year along with two other dates - July 8th, 2016 & May 5, 2017. Time will tell, what do you think?

Very good! Very good!

I wonder what Cumberbatch went in for then...

Volthoom - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
Cumberbatch. I feel as of late Depp plays the same character most of the time.
ninjamishi - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
JDUKE25 - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
That will certainly bring in the money.
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
..... Cool.
Lozzy - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
Marvel are not stupid enough to hire Johnny Deep!!! Not after what happened with Lone Ranger.
MrCBM56 - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
Honestly, Depp is PERFECT for the role. Maybe a little too perfect.
whoa123 - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
Damn! Color me interested! Don't know much about Strange though, sorry.
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:15 PM
I only don't like it because Marvel keeps going for older guys when they've said so many times that they want the MCU to last another 20 years.
MrCBM56 - 1/13/2014, 9:16 PM
The Lone Ranger wasn't Depp fault.
Bearjew - 1/13/2014, 9:16 PM
Yay! Hope they don't ya know, stick Doc Strange in the sixties so he's too old in the MCU timeline to fight alongside the Avengers, that would suck.
bigdannymac - 1/13/2014, 9:17 PM
...beat me to it! Nicely done with the scoop!

I like this casting, I like this casting very much
MrCBM56 - 1/13/2014, 9:17 PM
True. Depp is 50. I don't know. He's perfect but... Damn.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/13/2014, 9:17 PM
Uh....idk what to make of this!!
DraculaX - 1/13/2014, 9:17 PM
Is Tim Burton directing Dr. Strange as well?
MrCBM56 - 1/13/2014, 9:18 PM
Lol you think the Lone Ranger wasn't successful because Depp portrayed a Native American? He's probably the reason most people came to see the movie.

"Marvel Courting Johnny Depp For DOCTOR STRANGE Role"

Raptor055 - 1/13/2014, 9:18 PM
I call BS. When was the last time an actor was cast in a Marvel movie (or most movies) before a director was signed? I honestly don't think they'd start looking at actors until a director was in place.
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:19 PM
I love this idea though... Holy crap, this type of role is absolutely PERFECT for him. Now I understand Marvel's plans on making Dr. Strange the "next Iron Man".
JoeMomma29 - 1/13/2014, 9:19 PM
Naw call B.S. on this one, also if true Depp is a poor choice in my opinion.
JatevinM - 1/13/2014, 9:19 PM
Plain and simple this casting is on the level of RDJ as Tony Stark like it seriously is perfect. Everyone seems to forget that Johnny Depp is a really great actor capable of taking on serious roles and rocking them out. I've always wanted Johnny Depp to play Doctor Strange and anyone who says he is too old needs to shut the hell up considering RDJ is 48, Mark Ruffalo is 46, and Sam Jackson is 65. Johnny Depp is only 50 years old and thats a good age for someone who is supposed to be a neurosurgeon.
Rhinoman - 1/13/2014, 9:19 PM
Okay, this is false.

1) I know he has broken some news, but what has he broken where it was undisputedely him?

2) Marvel has a formula, pick the director, than pick the actors. Disney would not alter the Pirates of Carribean schedule in order for Depp to accept a role as Strange
batmanvsuperman - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
Hes ok but I'm sure it will be a younger unknown actor
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
Unfortunately, do to the Michael Douglas casting, people are going to shit on anything Marvel for the next few days.
3DWitchHunt - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
Interesting choice, albeit a bit old, if you ask me.
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
Poolio - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
Well this is quite....Strange.
FirstAvenger - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
I can see this.
TayDee - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
This is believable but I don't know much about Strange so eh.
Rhinoman - 1/13/2014, 9:20 PM
And how would they justify Depp's salary demands for Avengers 3 (He would be in it) without causing a storm with the other actors
MrCBM56 - 1/13/2014, 9:21 PM
Not going to lie, I did expect something a little bit bigger. Anyone could've known this. He's perfect for the role.
JatevinM - 1/13/2014, 9:21 PM
KOAlphaFlexXx@ You do realize that the only real reason the Long Ranger made any money was because of Johnny Depp. Plus the Lone Ranger seriously isn't half as bad as people make it out to be.
Ramiel - 1/13/2014, 9:22 PM
Hells yes! He would own as Dr. Strange.
DraculaX - 1/13/2014, 9:22 PM
Wasn't Pirates 5 or six delayed to 2016, the same year Dr. Strange is suppose to come out?
JoeMomma29 - 1/13/2014, 9:22 PM
@ Rhinoman

I agree Depp is slated for another Pirates and another Alice in Wonderland movie. Either way his name is always tied with Tim Burton which makes me shutter.
ezio619 - 1/13/2014, 9:22 PM
frankly ,in this age of rumors, speculation and unconfirmed reports,i will only listen to official press releases or things spoken out of the people involved in the films mouth
Kurne - 1/13/2014, 9:23 PM
No... @Intruder, please do NOT become another @1to10...
Poolio - 1/13/2014, 9:23 PM
No Marvel! There is only one person for Dr Strange.
