5 Reason Why X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Can Save The X-MEN Franchise

5 Reason Why X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Can Save The X-MEN Franchise

Lately we've all been pretty puzzled on how Fox's new X-Men film could either resurrect or destroy the entire X-Men franchise. Read on to see why it could actually do better than we think.

In 2011 Fox Studios both surprised and shocked X-Men Fans everywhere with their latest X-Men film titled "X-Men: First Class". After it's release a majority of fans highly praised the newest cast of the X-Men franchise and were also left wanting more from each of their performances. However other fans were highly disappointed with the fact that the so called "reboot" failed to correct the jumbled history of other X-Men Films. Wanting to understand both sides of my fellow X-Men fans I decided to watch each X-Men film and notice the disadvantages that corrupted the franchise's history. After taking note of each films disadvantages I concluded 5 ways in which "X-Men: Days of Future Past" could possibly save the entire X-Men Franchise.

The first time that we ever got a glimpse of the sentinels within any X-Men film was within 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand" for some reason Professor Charles Xavier detailed the danger room to have these giant bots fighting the X-Men. Perhaps Kittie Pryde had already warned the Professor of this horrific war that would soon take place in the near future and he wanted to see just how well the X-Men could handle fighting them. Due to the fact that the brotherhood of evil mutants prevailed in a plot to kill Senator Kelly the mutant registration act was created as a response to the evil deed. X-Men: The Last Stand teased us with mutants being pushed to the edge to take the cure to help eliminate their mutation. But towards the very end of the film we could see that the mutation cure failed and each mutant would return to their original mutation. Due to the fact that senator Kelly actually died in 2000's "X-Men" many people may soon come to find out that (with Mystique being rid of her mutation she can no longer portray Senator Kelly) Senator Kelly is actually dead and indeed it was mutant kinds fault. With this being said the sentinels will come to be created to destroy all of mutant kind. Perhaps the Mutant cure was a warning for what soon has yet to come.

#2.) Kittie Pryde's Warning!

After seeing Kittie Pryde in action for the first time in "X-Men Last Stand" we can already see that Kittie has been in the X-Mansion for sometime. All readers of "Days of Future Past" will know that Kittie Pryde plays a key role within the story. Perhaps the new X-Men film will not focus on the 80's but will focus on the later years after Kittie has entered the X-Mansion. By setting the film in both the past present and future we can catch up on what happens after X-Men: The Last Stand. By having Storm, Angel, Wolverine, Colossus, Beast, Iceman and Nightcrawler working with Kittie after the events of the Phoenix we can see how the future Kittie Pryde teleports back into the mind of herself in the present to warn the X-Men of the horrific future they will all come to live in.

#3.) Mystique leading The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

In X-Men The Last Stand Mystique is cured from her mutation (that will later kick back in) and is sadly left behind by Magneto claiming he has no use for her anymore. As revenge to show herself more worthy than ever she decides to form her own group of mutants and take Magneto's place to strike an assassination against either the new senator or president at an election as a threat to human kind. By reintroducing and introducing new characters such as "Blob" (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) , "Pyro" (X2 and X-Men The Last Stand), "Toad" (X-Men), "Avalanche" (comic), and also Sabertooth (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

#4.) What about the X-Men from First Class?

This may sound quite weird and very out of place but perhaps the Mutant cure caused it's patients to somewhat grow younger as an effect to it's cure. With a younger cast you can still use the characters from X-Men: First Class and have about 1/4 of them reprise their roles. You might be still wondering about Professor X? Remember that scene at the end of the credits of X-Men The Last Stand? Professor X was able to reach another body that was perhaps a patient who looked almost the same as he? Perhaps that actual body was a body that looked similar to his of X-Men First Class but of course bald!

#5.) Cyclops Returns!!!

If you remember seeing X-Men The Last Stand you'll "think" that possibly Cyclops died when in all actuality he regained his powers once Jean lost control and became the Phoenix during their encounter. This wold cause Cyclops to perhaps blast Jean at the last minute and manage to escape and become stranded without the X-Men being able to contact him. Have Cyclops return in the sequel for all the fans and truly kick some (butt).

Thanks Everyone for reading and please make sure you check out "X-Men Days of Future Past" July 18, 2014.

First Class already saved the X-Men.

What can truly save the X-Men movie franchise.........

ComicFan523 - 8/11/2012, 7:17 PM
I'm also in agreement with BarnaclePete: First Class already saved the X-Men. I think that the only real thing that Fox can do to bridge any continuity gaps with First Class and the original three X Men films is to do a film like you suggested in multiple time periods, as in having both the casts from the original X Men trilogy and First Class. That way the First Class series can continue, as can the original series, but with the continuity problems fixed.
TheOther - 8/11/2012, 7:32 PM
they should really fix the whole storyline. Or else I'm asking a reboot.
CoolantTech - 8/11/2012, 7:37 PM
Yeah because they seriously need to make some changes to that [frick]ed up horrible continuity, if Fox was smart they would try to make a XCU like Marvel has made a MCU, the X-men universe is big enough to be a world all its own.
ComicFan523 - 8/11/2012, 7:39 PM
Looking at it from a financial standpoint this makes sense too--I bet that an X Men movie with the casts of First Class, the original series, and some new mutants from a point in the future would do as well as The Avengers at the box office. I wasn't too big a fan of Cyclops in first couple of movies but it'd be cool to see him again. Maybe find a way to include Gambit and Deadpool from Wolverine Origins too.
CoolantTech - 8/11/2012, 7:40 PM
@Prot3ctor Excellent thread by the way for a crappy slow news day
mgeoff88 - 8/11/2012, 7:44 PM
Great editorial! They do need to bring Cyclops back! And Jean Grey! I was saying in another article a bit back, it could be written that Cyclops was never killed.

They could say he was so distraught over Jean Grey being taken by the Phoenix Force, that he ran off or something.

Also, FOX needs fix the the fact they killed off such important X-Men villains in their original trilogy.

They need to bring back:

-Lady Deathstrike
-Toad(I want Ray Park to come back)

I don't know want the hell FOX was thinking when they OK'ed this. What villains are they planning to use for X-Men 4? FOX has a chance to really right a lot of wrongs here.
CoolantTech - 8/11/2012, 7:49 PM
This is all good and well but we need to find a way to fit her in

As well as more of this

TheOnes - 8/11/2012, 7:53 PM
You know. This may be incredibly narcissistic and incredibly fanboyish, but i really hope we don't have Days of Future Past have any frame set after the events of Last Stand if the Time Travel section of the story is being adapted with it.

To me, Last Stand ruined so much that its damage could actually infect other movies. To this day i still can't forgive alot of the decisions (i know its far too nerdish, but things like taking one of the best love stories ever told, The Phoenix Saga, and mutating it into a horny zombie story and disregarding character development from the previous movies while doing it, it really irritates the hell out of me) and i hope to God what they tried to set up with that film never gets continued in any way

After that, i cannot thank Vaughn and Fox (weird to thank Fox, but with FC and Fringe season 5, i think they are starting to realise their mistake) enough for First Class. Not only is it in no way a continuation or a retelling of the original films, but it also works as a reboot and doesn't have to worry about cleaning up the mess of the previous films. It can go with its own new story and we can start fresh with a new trilogy and finally get a true X-men trilogy done right.

If Days of Future past does indeed have a time travel story, i hope they create their own future to link to and not try and validate X-3's existance

@Prot3ctor This article does deserve to be on the homepage.

@CoolantTek Psylocke actually appeared in X-Men: TLS. Unfortunately, in a half assed manner.
Tainted87 - 8/11/2012, 7:58 PM
I wasn't aware the X-Men franchise was in danger....?

You guys are going to be getting your hopes WAY too high for this. Just enjoy the ride - they are going to do what they want regardless.
megabatfan - 8/11/2012, 8:28 PM

Here's my take on how to fix the continuity issues...
It would have to be revealed that Emma Frost was actually from the future & came back in XMFC to change the past. She may be part of the Hellfire Club wanting to save Phoenix for their purposes, or a good guy coming back to prevent Prof. X from being "killed". This is basically like the new Star Trek, where Leonard Nimoy's Spock created an alternate timeline just by his presence. Emma Frost's presence created a ripple in time that changed everything...
This would clear up the issues with:
-Emma Frost being younger in XMOW & older in XMFC
-Prof X walking in X3 & being paralized in XMFC
-Events changed leading to Beast becoming big & blue years before (XMFC vs X3).
Once this is established, those continuity issues could be cleared up. But in the future, things didn't exactly change the way they were expected, so Days of Future Past would come in here. Wolverine, Cable, Bishop, whoever...would have to return to the past as well to change the future for the better)
CoolantTech - 8/11/2012, 8:58 PM
Also do we need another story about Mutant legislation and racism all over over again, good God im tired of hearing about "the mutant problem" every single X-men movie dealt with this even the crappy X-men Origins Wolverine delved in it to a certain extent with Striker.

Less "fit in with the world (or not)" type dynamics and more stuff like this

Tainted87 - 8/11/2012, 9:59 PM
Is Beast really picking his nose in the bottom right corner?

X-Men is all about diversity. It speaks beyond racism and apartheid, but the hope that someday the human race will put prejudice behind us... countered with the reality that not everyone feels the same way.

You can have Apocalypse in all of his "survival of the fittest" Darwinism preaching... and still speak volumes about prejudice. It's more along the lines of dipping further into the mutant-superior's mentality, and depending on Apocalypse's effectiveness, would set the mutant cause back a thousand years.
CoolantTech - 8/11/2012, 10:09 PM
@Taited87 Well that does make sense but much less of that, make it mainly about other stuff
95 - 8/11/2012, 10:43 PM
Yes, Days Of Future Past can be the X-Men film we deserve... if we get Cable, Sentinels, (leading) Cyclops, and/or Apocalypse. However, 20th Century Fox can't do any better than water down Marvel properties (revert to Disney!). First Class really disappointed me (still a good film considering it's rushed production schedule). It set up a lot of good ideas and felt closer to the source material — I just expected more after 11 years of trying to get the mythos right! 20th Century Fox is riding on my patience.
95 - 8/11/2012, 10:52 PM
Good article. I agree. Just don't want to get my hopes up.

@CoolantTek I get what your saying, I actually agree. @Tainted87 brought up good points. Those civil rights themes are important to the mythos — but I also want to see the X-Men tackle threats like the Shi'ar — without the masterplan being "Mutant Supremacy" and/or "Mutant Genocide".
mgeoff88 - 8/11/2012, 11:22 PM
@Prot3ctor No problem, dude. Yah, I don't get that at all. It was the same exact thing with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, with killing off Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and possibly Venom.

I even remember reading a rumor that his Spider-Man films would eventually lead up to Spidey taking on the Sinister Six. How would that have worked with Doc Ock and the Green Goblin not being on the team? It wouldn't be the same. These writers need to start thinking more long term.

@CoolantTek Did you actually read that Psylocke#1 issue? If you did, would you say it's worth checking out? Psylocke is one of my favorite X-Men characters.

@Tainted That's what I love about X-Men so much; its social commentary of the civil rights movement. Human beings being prejudice of other people they don't understand. Mutants may have special abilities and altered appearances, but they are still humans beings no? That makes their struggles more relatable, realistic, and relevant.

Charles Xavier is like Martin Luther King Jr., and Magneto is like Malcom X. Xavier wants mutants to have equal rights. And he wants to use a more peaceful, diplomatic approach to reach his goal. Magneto wants the same for mutants, only his approach is as different as night and day compared to Xavier's. He wants peace for mutants, by any means necessary.

I've always preferred MLK's approach. You will never create peace through violence. Violence only leads to more violence. It's these kind of issues that adds more depth and compassion to the X-Men universe. Characters in a comic book that are fighting for something very real and universal.
StormLoganSummers - 8/11/2012, 11:52 PM
New continuity should be established in DOFP so that the original trilogy becomes an alternate timeline. This way, many of the mutants that showed up there can do so in the new timeline--Cyclops, Jean, Angel, Iceman, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, etc.
CoolantTech - 8/12/2012, 12:07 AM
@mgeoff88 I totally get what your'e saying me bieng black and all, but this was covered in 4 films already to the tee, I just wanna see some of the other X-men stories for god sakes, like what @earzmudo said no apocalpyse as yet in what...4 films? Fox is pathetic, there getting better but still... bring it home for us.
mgeoff88 - 8/12/2012, 6:34 AM
@CoolantTek I was speaking more about why I love the X-Men so much in general. But you're right, it has been covered enough already in the movies.

I would really like to see Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister in a X-Men movie soon. Magneto has been done to death. I want to see FOX use other X-Men villains. Well, in First Class they were fighting the Hellfire Club before Magneto turned evil. That's what I want to see more of; more variety of primary villains.

X-Men: DOFP could really change things for up the whole X-Men movie franchise.
BarnaclePete - 8/12/2012, 8:06 AM
I think you guys are looking at this the wrong way. Given the history of how the X-Men movies have been handled story wise and from who Bryan Singer has already said I think what you will see is them mostly use the First Class characters. Yes, it would be cool to have some involvement from the original cast, but I doubt it. I think you will see elements from the comic story combined with mostly new stuff using the cast from First Class with very few new characters thrown in.
Hellsing - 8/12/2012, 8:37 AM
Wrong reasons honestly, and If anything there most likely going to use Days Of Future Past to go the Trek reboot route. Which would allow them to go there own path. Also I think people are reading over thinking slightly. Just because there using the title doesn't necessarily mean there going to use anything at all.

First Class was very good, could have been excellent if they were a bit more brave with it. Instead of Xavier and Magneto going there seperate ways, it should have been the first crack in there relationship. I mean the only reason I believed the fact that they would regard each other as Brothers was the superb acting from Fassbender and Mcavoy. I mean they only knew each other for what a month or two, we needed more time but regardless still a good movie.

I believe the roster needs to be expanded, currently theres only 3 memebers add one more character. and more focus on Xavier, the first movie was Eriks journey towards becoming Magneto, so the 2nd one should be Charles Xaviers journey to becoming Professor X. Because he's still the young charles but in a wheel chair.

Any ways some decent but slightly weird ideas
Hellsing - 8/12/2012, 9:08 AM
Like some one mentioned an alternate timeline would be the saving grace of the franchise.
DrDoom - 8/12/2012, 5:27 PM
The only thing that could save any Marvel franchise is Marvel Studios.
ralfinader - 8/13/2012, 7:48 AM
Even though I didn't like it, First Class has already saved the franchise. Most people when discussing it are positive, and the fact that they are talking about it still, without knowledge of the upcoming sequel, means it made the impact it needed to.
