EDITORIAL: Why Squirrel Girl is the Most Underrated Marvel Character

I am here today to talk to you about one of the most underrated Marvel characters in history. Right now you may be rolling your eyes, but trust me, I have some good reasons why Squirrel Girl is one of the most Underrated Marvel Characters…

I bet right now you are rolling your eyes and shaking your head. You may think that Squirrel Girl is lame, but trust me, once you dig into her background, you will find that she is an epic character that deserves more recognition. Doreen Green / Squirrel Girl is definitely not Marvel’s greatest female character. I’m not arguing that she is an amazing character and needs to be in every movie, just that she could use a little more acknowledgement. I will give you 10 reasons why I think Squirrel Girl is great and needs more appreciation, then I want YOU to tell me what you think about her. Let’s start with Number 1………

1. She not only beat Dr. Doom, but also:

The Mandarin, M.O.D.O.K., Thanos, Bi-Beast, Pluto, Fin Fang Foom, Deadpool, Baron Mordo, Korvac, Wolverine, Giganto, and Ego the Living Planet......... And you thought she was weak...

2. She is a Mutant

Most big Squirrel Girl fans know she is a mutant. Why is this good? Because it doesn’t mean she got her powers some completely random way, like getting bit by a radioactive squirrel. No, instead, she is a mutant. It explains her powers without being completely goofy. Does this mean we can see her in a future X-Men movie? Even though the fact that she is a mutant helps her chances, the sad truth is: probably not.

3. She tried to be Iron Man’s Sidekick

14 year old mutant Doreen Green wanted to be a superheroine under the name Squirrel Girl. She hoped to impress Iron Man when she ambushed him in the forest. Iron Man declined her when she asked to become his sidekick. But just then, Dr. Doom captured Iron Man, which led to… uh… you know… (But Iron Man still didn’t let her become his sidekick) That made a pretty fantastic issue…

4. Her Costume is Awesome

I mean, just look at it. The tail adds originality to the character, while the fur suit helps with the fact that she has squirrel powers.

5. Her Powers

And speaking of her powers… seriously though… the powers of a squirrel!?! Isn’t that awesome? I mean, she can lift between 800 lbs. and 25 tons! She can also leap several stories, has small claws on each finger and toe, has a 3 foot long semi-prehensile tail, has a retractable knuckle spike, has a healing factor, and can communicate with squirrels!!! Now that is pretty awesome.

6. She is only 14

It’s one thing when a grown woman defeats some of the greatest super villains in the Marvel Universe, it’s another when a Teenager does.

7. Her Squirrels have Awesome Names

I mean, C’mon! Monkey Joe… Tippy Toe, Slippy Pete, Mr. Freckle, and (my personal favorite) Nutso! Sadly they were all killed… Moment of silence…

Moving on…

8. Her Origin

She was created as a throw-away character who was just made for some comic-relief. She has come a long way…

9. She has an awesome Nickname

The Slayer of all that Breathes………………… Nuff Said.

10. Dum-Dum Dugan offered her a position at S.H.I.E.L.D.

which she turned down! Dugan said he’s been watching her for some time now, and he found her to be very effective at defeating powerful super villains. I mean, go back up to #1 and look at her track record! She beat the real Thanos for crying out loud! But, she said she was happy with the Great-Lake Avengers and declined Dugan’s offer. But uh, really? Great-Lake Avengers? Uh… Okay…

Final Statement

Clearly, Squirrel Girl is an amazing character, and really needs more recognition. She has an amazing history, great powers, and is an overall very interesting character. I’m surprised her only television appearance was a 3 second cameo in Fantastic Four: Earth’s Greatest Heroes. She needs to be featured in more video games as well, and needs to be in comics more often. Does she need to be in a movie? As awesome as that would be, it isn’t the highest priority right now. The point is, Squirrel Girl is extremely underrated. Those are only 10 reasons why she is great, and if everyone knew this, she’d be so popular right now. Sadly, she is only a D-List Marvel Character…

"I didn't know what the hell was going on. But it was an invasion. Right here in America. An invasion! And my first thought -- my first thought was: The baby! I've got to find and protect the baby. And maybe that doesn't surprise you, but it surprised the hell out of me. I will confess this... When I first auditioned to be the nanny, I was really hoping that the Avengers would notice me and say amongst themselves: We really need her on the team. I took this job hoping to be an Avenger but now all I cared about -- all I cared about was protecting the child."

She was badass when she kicked Wolverine's ass in New Avengers recently.

Marvel wiki shows her strength between 800 lbs and 25 tons but why is it such a huge range difference?

Squirrel girl is entertaining for the goofyness of the concept. With all the Marvel movies being made I would love to see a team movie featuring mostly off beat odd marvel characters.
Ichaos - 9/15/2013, 9:06 PM
On beating Wolverine if your referring to the comic I am thinking about it's more a case of his underestimating her which probably is why she wins when she does most.

Also on being a mutant by definition that is pretty much a random way of getting powers. Stan Lee just got lazy and tired of thinking up how people got their powers so he invented mutants.

Another god damn Squirrel girl editorial? This is getting ridiculous. And yes I clicked on this article just to post this. Eat Sh&$ Editorial..ers.

JamesMan - 9/15/2013, 9:17 PM
@DaVinci31- Well thank you, nice to see what he has to say.

Squirrel Girl needs to be a side character at one point in the future. I'm with @Ichaos, we need a teamup movie with offbeat Marvel characters.

This is borderline retarded. I can't tell if this editorial is meant to be taken seriously, or done as a joke.

Being as this is a primarily user-driven site, I motion to have a "thumbs down" option added.

This Editorial is meant as a joke right?...Next you'll be making a case for Matter Eater Lad

I could see Erin Way playing her. She played a similar character on Alphas minus the squirrel powers but she was adorable and funny nonetheless
fortycals - 9/17/2013, 9:44 AM
She also beat galactus of panel. That is her real mutant power, the ability to never lose a fight. Also at this point I think she is older than 14
