FAN-ticizing: My hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man sequel!

My hopes and thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man sequel!

Today I'll be quickly sharing my thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man, and the upcoming sequel. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to be released on the 18th April in the UK (according to IMDB...)
I actually have high hopes for the sequel, however first I'll be sharing my thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man:
I was very excited for TASM, I'd been following it since the cancellation of Spider-Man 4 all the way back in 2010. Whilst I noticed it's flaws I actually really enjoyed TASM, I'm a big believer in the older change is good phrase. I liked Webb's take on the Spider-Man story and it really does annoy me when I see comments like "TASM sucked! The origin was all wrong!" Okay...Imagine Webb decided to go with the classic origin, people would have complained that it was a complete copy of the Raimi origin (which is pretty much identical to Spider-Man's first comic appearance)I liked Andrew's take on Peter, I liked the new suit. I thought that the effects were great, especially the swinging and for the most part I thought the action in general was great. The only real problems I had with the film were down to the script and Sony keeping their grubby hands firmly on Webb's shoulders.

Now I'll be sharing my thoughts on the sequel.

First things first let's talk about the villain, we already know that Jamie Foxx will be portraying Electro. I'm actually okay with this, for a few reasons. First of all Jamie Foxx is brilliant actor, and the fact that the character is white doesn't matter at all. I've never been a huge fan of Electro, it's not that I think he's a bad villain, I just don't think that his story is...amazing. The only fear I have about including Electro is that I think it may be somewhat predictable. Although the effects will be breathtaking.

I think it's safe to assume that Electro will not be main the main antagonist, IMDB lists Steven Weber as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin. Interesting... Even if this isn't true I think that the Goblin will show up, however I hope that they can build it up throughout the movie. If the Goblin is introduced then we have to add Harry, we also already know that Shailene Woodley will be playing Mary Jane, hopefully Webb will not go down the love triangle route, instead set up a relationship between Harry and MJ. Emma Stone has expressed interest in going down the death of Gwen Stacey route, if the Goblin does show up then this film has potential to be brilliant. This leads me into my next point, during the first film peter reveals to Gwen that he is Spider-Man, this sets up a somewhat interesting plot line as we know that Captain Stacey (unlike the comics) isn't a fan of Spidey. In the film's climax Captain Stacey (after previously discovering Spidey's identity) tells Peter to leave Gwen alone, to keep her away from harm however Peter ignores this and hooks up with Gwen. This is one of the occasions where I can agree with all the comments I see about TASM, Peter didn't really change throughout the movie but I also think that this could provide some great character development for the sequel. Let's say the sequel ends on the George Washington bridge, Gwen has died after Peter tried to save her. I think a great way to end the sequel would be to have Peter in a terrible state, he's finally realized that disobeying Captain Stacey was a bad idea, he knows that he put Gwen in danger. Peter will have grown up, he's realized his mistakes and is now a more responsible person (maybe we could include an Uncle Ben flashback)

Quick little update here, whilst I agree that Peter didn't exactly change much throughout the movie I did still feel a connection to him. When we flash forward to Peter in High School I actually felt for him. Maybe it's just because I know what it's like to be a loner...

There are also some smaller things I'd like to see, bring back Jameson, JK Simmons has expressed interest in returning so why not!? We know Peter has an interest in photography so let's say Aunt May has trouble paying the bills and Peter gets a job at the Daily Bugle to support her. This would also be a great time to introduce Eddie Brock. As I've already mentioned I'd like to see Harry introduced, we already know that Mary Jane will have a small role so have Harry and Mary Jane as a sort of double act. I'd like to see more of Spider-Man swinging through New York during the day time, going back a bit I thought The Amazing Spider-Man's cinematography was amazing, especially the crane scene. There could be a scene in which Spidey is swinging through the city and then realizes he has to get back to school, maybe on the way there he'd have to stop a bank robbery or a save a child's balloon...

We already know that Spider-Man will be getting a new suit, we also know that it will be more classical. Personally I liked the suit, I thought was a great new twist on the suit that we all love. Considering the Raimi suit is pretty much identical to the comic suit I don't see the need for a change, least ditch the Asics.

These a are my hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, I could probably go into a lot more detail but I've managed to get my main thoughts across. Hopefully Sony will release Webb and give him more of a free reign this time around.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I am dreading this sequel for the simple fact that who the villain is. Knowing Sony, Electro will be the only villain. I'm not saying he will be, but he more than likely is. Jamie Foxx is a great actor but, he isn't villain material and if he was, he could play a better villain. I find Electro to be a waste of ink. He was never an interesting character, his powers were unbelievably bad and he has no agenda.

The Lizard is my favorite comicbook villain and I feel they served him great justice, even without Billy and Martha. They nailed him perfectly. As far as Peter not growing throughout the movie, I disagreee. Call me a webb-head all you want, I feel that he learned what being a hero means. You saw it in his body language on the bridge after he saved Jack. While he never fully understand responsibility, I feel it will be expanded upon and I think after Gwen's death, he will have matured in a full cycle. I think Venom should've been in the sequel, he fits right into the story and it's very easy to fit him into the second movie. So easy. End the trilogy with the last movie being "The Night that Gwen Stacy Died". End the movie with Peter opening his front door and there is M.J saying "Face it tiger, you hit the jackpot". For me, that would be a satisfying ending and a great way to end a trilogy. They make more, fine but I won't watch them until dvd.

I hope they throw mysterio in too the mix because electro can't hold a movie by himself neither can mysterio, so putting them two in the same movie would make sense, also I'm sick of the whole one villain formula, yes you could say that the last time that happens in a spider-man movie we got spider-man 3, but spider-man 3 wasn't a bad movie because of the villains it's a bad movie because it was poorly written and poorly acted, look at the dark knight it had the joker and two-face in the same movie and it worked. I also hope they use Connors again to help Peter while he's in prison because one thing nearly all superhero movies do is with the exception of Loki in the avengers and Thor is either kill off the villain or if he doesn't die never use or even reference him again.

@SotoJuiceMan: I don't like him because he is simply not an interesting character. I want an interesting AND threatening villain for Spider-Man. Hell, Venom could be done justice in the second movie. Kraven couldn't work unless they bring back Lizard (in my opinion), Mysterio is cool but not threatening. They're really going to have to make the trailer look good if they want my interest again cause I absolutely love TASM, it's my favorite Spider-Man movie. Unfortunately, I dread the sequel because Electro is such a bad choice.

At least we will get Green Goblin in the third. That will be redeeming and hopefully, it will be the best Spider-Man film.
