How To Draw A WOLVERINE Comic Book Cover.

How To Draw A WOLVERINE Comic Book Cover.

Hi guys, I'm CBM username BANNER here. I will teach you the basics of drawing a wonderful comic book cover. From picking a good reference up to the process of creating the whole thing. Check it out.

This is how I DO IT. A lot of comics artist have their own technique and style but this is how I do mine. You can still do whatever you wanna do anyway.

One important thing, you should be turning on your radio while drawing an image because it helps. I did this drawing while the radio was playing different kinds of music though I listen mostly to Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, I prefer mellow music while drawing some stuff. And the radio was playing Kenny Roger's "You Decorated my Life" while I'm doing my thing. And this is what I came up with.

Find the best image of Wolverine that you want to draw. There's a lot of that available on the internet! I choose this because it look's badass!

I usually starts with a .7 mechanical pencil with HB lead, I use mechanical pencil while drawing because I hate sharpening a wooden pencil. A Vellum board paper is nice because it's like Bristol board too. I usually starts drawing the eyes first.

From the sketch alone, you must already have that kick-ass image of Wolverine on paper. The image must come at you like a cobra, like Logan was saying something like..."You think youre pretty tough with a name like Wayne eh? Well I'm gonna kick your ass so hard you'l be burfin' farts for a week."

NOTE: You can add little drawings of Wolverine on the sides to make your Wolverine drawing worthy of the Canadian Mutant himself.

Again, I usually starts with the eyes! The eyes!!! After filling the eyes with inks using tech pens, I use a Sharpie marker when doing shadow effects on the nose the teeth and whatever you want to put shadows on.

After I'm finished with his scruffy visage, I started doing the hair. I don't want to use a Sharpie and color the whole thing in black because I wanted to do as many visible strands of hair as possible. So I use tech pens again.

Some Hugh Jackman hair detail action...

I've added some cross-hatching technique on Logan's beard, neck and throat area so as to make him more bad-ass! Because Jean Grey wants kissing him rough. Eat your heart out Slim!

The claws got to be long and sharp necessary to make it a true legend. And it always come in handy specially when pinching Jean Greys ass. Booyah!!!

I leave it for a while and I stare at the first two images on the paper while listening to Kenny Roger's "Through the Years" on my radio.

Look for something that you can still add on the image to make it ooze with awesomeness because youre drawing a Wolverine comic book cover! And if you can't do it with dignity, beware because he'll come to your house and piss on your lawn.

You finally get to draw the third and final Wolverine piece!

Leave it for a while and stare at the drawing again while listening to The Carpenters "Top of the World" playing on your broken radio. And then proceed to add the a weapon-X body that heals itself.

Now you can turn off youre radio and play Enter Sandman on your iPhone!

Great art work. You've got talent.
You know what always frustrates me, is how come cbm movie poster designers never try to make the posters look more like comic book covers. Full of great angles and full of fighting and action. Instead we just get poses and the most action we get is an explosion and sparks/debris in the background.

Wow this is really awesome! Great work!

Nice work dude! Why are you here and not working for Marvel/DC already?
anthonyEstark - 12/9/2013, 8:27 AM
I agree with jla, Go show Marvel this!

Isn't that swiping?

From Your step by steps It is obvious you have talent but you cant just outright copy a picture. (That's why Greg Land is so unpopular)

You can use references to get things like anatomy, emotions and lighting right but it is kind of frowned upon to flat out copy a previous image (In this case a well known one) You might as well have traced it.
Scuzz - 12/9/2013, 5:02 PM
All 3 drawings are copied from wolverine promotional posters.
Banner - 12/9/2013, 5:36 PM
@Scuzz- you cannot trace an image specially if youre drawing the image in a Vellum board. I'm not using a tracing paper either in all my drawings. The Hugh Jackman images are used as a photo reference only. I can draw without reference too, here are some examples of my drawings with/out using a reference.

SCUZZ... haven't you read the first sentence of this thread? Or you're too lazy to read that's why you immediately jump into conclusion?

BANNER says.."This is how I DO IT. A lot of comics artist have their own technique and style but this is how I do mine. You can still do whatever you wanna do anyway."

Why would you tell him what to do with his use of references when it works for him that way? or you're just sour grapes.
kownthomer - 12/9/2013, 9:31 PM
What Scuzz was pointing out was the lack of creativity in the image. I don't deny the talent. I just wish you had shown your own creative abilities, instead of just copying something else.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I will totally apply some, if not most of your skills into my own drawings. Great stuff man! Keep up the great inkin'!
Banner - 12/10/2013, 12:10 AM

cheers mate!
Scuzz - 12/10/2013, 3:52 AM
I no you didn't trace it but you might as well have.

That other stuff is actually pretty awesome. You should do a how to on that.

I just want to know what kind of article is this? Selling Yourself? Self promotion? What's this?
AshleyWilliams - 12/10/2013, 5:21 AM
You have skills dude.
DurtyTalynt - 12/10/2013, 6:05 AM
Wheres the wolverine drawing? Thats just hugh jackman in a wifebeater...
Banner - 12/10/2013, 5:49 PM
@Ancar... it's not self-promotion and I'm not selling myself because I already have a good paying job as a game designer. The title speaks for itself, "How To Draw A Comic Book Cover"

@scuzz... well I might.
sameoldthing - 12/11/2013, 3:29 AM just recreated photo images man.
