After the 1985 maxi-series "Crisis on Infinite Earths", the Justice Society of America was 'put into limbo' in the 1986 one-shot "Last Days of the Justice Society of America Special". Except for the occasional flashback, or guest appearance in titles such as The Young All-Stars and Secret Origins, the JSA, outside of Dr. Fate, the Spectre, Power Girl, and Star-Spangled Kid (later Skyman), was never featured as the leads in a comic story. That all changed in 1991, when writer Len Strazewski, along with artists Rick Burchett, Grant Miehm, Mike Parobeck, and Tom Artis, were commissioned to create an 8-issue miniseries, whose high sales and strong reception would prove the catalyst for the first JSA ongoing in 1992, also written by Strazewski and drawn by Parobeck and Burchett.

The story saw the team, circa 1950 (a year before they disbanded due to the actions of the House Un-American Activities Committee), banding together to thwart a plot by Vandal Savage, using Starman's gravity rod and a new telescope built for an observatory, to summon three celestial beings (taking the forms of the constellations of Orion, Andromeda and Sagittarius) and use them to bring the world back into the Dark Ages (by absorbing the energies of all new technologies at the time), allowing him to rule more easily.

I'm a big fan of Mike Parobeck's artwork, and became a fan of Strazewski as a writer after reading the first part of his run on NOW! Comics's Speed racer series, and I hope to read this JSA mini at some point. I happened upon a decent summary of this mini, and thought it would make a pretty good addition to the DC Premiere series of animated DTV features. So with that, here's how the film would look:
-Script adapted by Strazewski himself, plus Greg Wiseman and Michael Jelenic.
-Voice direction by Andrea Romano.
-Directed by Sam Liu (act one) and Lauren Montgomery (act two).
-Art/animation style a combination of Parobeck's and the "Darwyn Cooke-lite" from Justice League: The New Frontier.

And now, as always, we come to my idea for a voice cast:

Justice Society of America
-Mark Valley as the voice of the Flash/Jay Garrick

He's played Christopher Chance, he's getting a crack at Superman, so why not have him play the original fastest man alive?

-Gary Sinise as the voice of Green Lantern/Alan Scott

-Michael Shanks as the voice of Hawkman/Carter Hall

He's had experience playing the guy before (Smallville, anyone?), so it'd be a cakewalk for him to voice ol' wingy.

Lori Loughlin as the voice of Black Canary/Dinah Drake Lance

Loughlin actually played the elder Canary (albeit renamed "Carolyn") in the short-lived Birds of Prey TV series, and also lent her voice to Booster Gold's episode of Justice League Unlimited, so I thought it wouldn't be a stretch for her to once again play the scream-less bird.

Alan Tudyk as the voice of Starman/Ted Knight

Tudyk has played the scientist type before, going all the way back to his Firefly days, and has built up a good amount of experience with the DCU (thanks to Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice), so I thought he would be good enough for voicing the original Starman.

Supporting
-Robert Beltran as the voice of William Wildeagle

Wildeagle is a fellow archaeologist of Carter Hall's who alerts him to some cave paintings whose events bear similarity to the fiasco going on in the story. I picked Beltran to voice him since he recently lent his voice to a DC cartoon, a Young Justice episode spotlighting Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes.

-Hank Azaria as the voice of 'Doiby' Dickles

I figured, by using his Louie the mobster voice from "The Simpsons", Azaria would make a decent Doiby, 'Joisy' accent and all.

Villains
-John Shea as the voice of Vandal Savage

Picking Shea to voice comicdom's first immortal villain was inspired by two things: his role as Lex Luthor on 'Lois and Clark', and his 'Lois and Clark' co-star Dean Cain's role as Dr. Curtis Knox (a Vandal Savage-inspired villain) on 'Smallville'.

-Fred Tatasciore reprising Solomon Grundy

Tatasciore voiced Grundy in the "Batman: Arkham City" video game last year, so why not bring him back for this character? He does a pretty intimidating Grundy.

+The Constellation Beings
-Nolan North as the voice of Orion

-Jennifer Hale as the voice of Andromeda

-Phil Morris (doing a Kerwin Matthews impression circa "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad") as the voice of Sagittarius

Additional Voices
-Kevin Michael Richardson as a doomsayer, henchman
-Tom Kenny as Rocco the head looter, henchman, Charlie
-Keith Ferguson as a looter, henchman, mechanic
-Tress MacNeille as Lucille Ball
-Carlos Alazraqui as Desi Arnaz, Johnny
-Sam McMurray as Snooky Lanson (Who?)and a cameraman

And that's that! For taking the time to view this, ladies and gentlemen...the guy I mentioned who'd be played by Sam McMurray, "Your Hit Parade's" SNOOKY LANSON:

Nice stuff!! I'd like to see you try your hand at Justice League International (the 80's Keith Giffen version) or an "Old Man Logan" animated movie.

@MrBlueSky
No on an "Old Man Logan" animated film (may probably do one based on "Weapon X"), but yes to "Justice League International". Here's what I've got on my queue:
-"Godzilla Vs. Gekido-Jin" (based on the 1992 Dark Horse "Godzilla Color Special")
-"Metallix: The Animated Series" (based on the short-lived comic by David Michelinie, Bob Layton, and Ron Lim)
-My two entries in my "Avengers Legends" series of films--She-Hulk and Tigra
-My next "X-Men Legends" entry--Rogue and Gambit
-"Black Canary: New Wings", based on the 1991 mini
-A new film based on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"
-"Atomic Robo: The Animated Series"
-"Power Girl: The Animated Series", based on the Palmiotti/Gray/Conner run.
-"Danger Girl: Back In Black", based on the 2006 mini.
-"G.I. Joe: Special Missions--The Series", based on the second volume by Devil's Due and the first volume by Marvel.
-And the "BIG ONE", an animated miniseries adaptation of Kurt Busiek and George Perez's "JLA/Avengers".

@FlixMentallo2 Let me guess: you hat every single modern day comic.

Also: F*ck Yes to the "X-Men Legends - Rohue and Gambit" animated film. Who are you going to cast as them?
FlixMentallo21 - 10/28/2012, 3:53 PM
@MrBlueSky
I don't hate EVERY modern comic--just the majority of them (I did like the new Defenders series).

As to the second point, it's going to be based on Rogue's 1994 mini (by Howard Mackie and Mike Wieringo), and will feature the voices of Adrianne Palicki as Rogue and Niall Matter as Gambit.

this is greatness. I love the history of JSA and Grundy and Savage in any way they can be used. they can all tie so neatly its a shame they are not explored more deeply. id love to sse the animated. the cast, for all the right reasons, is outstanding

@ager
Out of all the cast members, any favorites?

while theyre all fantastic nods to past projects, I like John Shea as the voice of Vandal Savage the most. its far enough back that most i think it would be the most exciting, like when Supergirl guest starred as Lara El on Smallville.
FlixMentallo21 - 10/29/2012, 7:32 PM
Helen Slater played Lara El on Smallville?
ager - 11/1/2012, 2:31 PM
