Rant about Superior Spider-Man

Just my thoughts on the recent story

I truly believe Marvel Comics doesn’t know what to do with Spider-Man anymore. I really do. In 2007, fans had to endure “One More Day” while Joe Quesada attempted to preserve Spider-man’s longevity for the next 20 or 30 years (Read: He made the book what he personally wanted it to be) by “Retconning” Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane.

Marvel, please don’t say this wasn’t a retcon as it clearly was.

Now in 2012, Marvel has killed off Peter Parker both in their Ultimate Marvel universe AND the 616 universe (The main one) for no real reason other then to replace a character that has been around for 50 years with someone who’s meant to be better…

But for whatever reason swings away from a fight in the first pages of the first issue but whatever.

I won’t spoil issue #700 since I know alot of hype is surrounding it and it’s not fair to fans but I will state my feelings on the shake up.

It didn’t need to be done. In either universe (I’m speaking more about 616 since Ultimate Spider-Man is bendis’s baby)

If you get to a point where you need to kill off a beloved character because

A) You’ve taken them as far as you can
B) You want to replace them with someone for the next.gen of fans
or
C) You want to shake things up

It’s time you let someone else play with the toys and write the stories.

Dan Slott, you’ve done so much good for Spider-Man (Peter Parker). You gave him a job, new villains (None of which are overly impressive but all well) new suits and brought back fan favourites. You hinted at a reunited Peter and MJ. Hell, you even wrote a video game for him.

In short, you showed you LOVED Spider-Man.

But now with your final (And Marvel’s “final” Amazing Spider-Man issue) you’ve un-done it all and left a sour taste for the fans. To the point of death threats.
And here’s the thing, you knew it was gonna piss off fans. You knew so many people wouldn’t like it but you did it anyway. As if you went out of your way to do it.

I know you’re wanted to write Spider-Man since forever and you did great. But honestly it’s time for fresh blood. Now instead we’re stuck with Marvel saying “Peter Parker fans with fade away” and that this is the end for Peter Parker, period.

As a fan, I know this is all not true but what’s upsetting the most is for the unforseen future I won’t get to read ANY new Peter Parker stories, I’ll have to wait for the “Return story - Movie cash in” we all know is coming and then the dull first issues of “Peter Parker is BACK! BUY AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 because in a few years it might be worth something”

*Sigh*

I would never sent Dan Slott a death threat. Not today, not tomorrow or in a million years. Has he upset me? Yes. Do I think the story and it’s fallout/New status quo is a bad idea? YES. Do I hate him? No. His run on She-Hulk is enough to make me love the man forever, even though he did tease Peter and MJ would be together again…something I’ve wanted since 2007. But still…

Bro. You put your article in the teaser, in the actual text you have what shows up whenever somebody starts writing (u r supposed to delete the "Contributing is a privilege" etc.) I suggest you put the text in the actual article, not just the teaser. Hope it helped :)

I completely agree with you. I think what Marvel's doing is beyond stupid. Peter Parker is their household name. To kill him off is something I still don't understand why they did at all. Plus he's got a few more movies ahead of him probably so wtf would they do that?

Call this crazy but why can't there be 2 Spider-Men (or 3 if you count Ultimate)? Why not just have 2 separate comic book lines with their different characters? Make the older generation happy with continuing to make awesome stories about Peter Parker's Spider-Man while bringing in new writers for the new series for a brand new generation. Everyone wins.

-Ock is not supposed to be "better". the Superior in the name is tongue in cheek , he thinks of HIMSELF as superior to Peter Parker.
Nobody ACTUALLY thinks he is better than Peter, Marvel ESPECIALLY knows this.

-of course it didn't need to be done. NOTHING in comics needs to be done. No story is necessary, they're just stories.

This is all temporary. its all just one story arc, which will wrap up when Peter gets his revenge on.

Question: If the Doc ock story was told in Amazing Spiderman #698-710, would you really have given a flying f***? No. You would have been like "oh, Doc ock is in Spidey's brain, sweet!". and you'd know that it would all settle itself eventually when Peter gets back, cus of course he's not dead and gone.

They needed a number one issue, Doc Ock gave them their number one issue. and when its all over, Peter will be back with a brand spanking new Amazing Spiderman #1.

Its marketing, pure and simple. I am baffled by the protest against this, its like you guys don't know how comics work, after how many years of reading them!

Slott seeded this story through his whole run, and you have no idea of his endgame. You honestly would not buy a copy of Superior Spiderman, to see what Doc Ock would do as Spiderman? are you that jaded? its an insanely awesome concept, and i can probably name about 10,000 stories more horrible than this idea.

Years from now, people will remember this as "the time Ock stole Peter's body and ran around with it."
I, however, will remember people cracking a major naive wobbly over a completely inocuous story arc. People like this make me hate reading comments.

@Fenix

Thanks :) was a simple mistake on my part but thank you

@SoTo
Ok....

@DRem21

I agree, why can't there be 2 spider-men?

@xcrementus

The "better" line is from Marvel themselves. It isn't tongue in cheek, the "Superior" title is.

I'm not jaded and Slott didn't seed this story for 100 issues, that's just bullshit. I never said I wouldn't buy the comic either, I just said I feel the whole concept didn't need to occur.

I don't see it as an "insanely awesome concept" as the whole thing has been done many times in comics as a whole, plus it takes away the awesome visuals of Doc Ock

"I, however, will remember people cracking a major naive wobbly over a completely inocuous story arc. People like this make me hate reading comments"

Well then I suggest you don't read the comments.

Yeah, why is Marvel trying so hard to ruin Spider-Man? It all went down hill since One More Day. The truth of the matter is we all have to sit around and wait for a team of editors and writers to finally come in and clean up the mess created by Quesada and Slott.
CorndogBurglar - 12/24/2012, 4:45 AM
I have never been a big Spidey fan. I like when he's in other character's books, but i've never been a reader of Spidey's own books.

So let me get this straight...Doc Ock is now Spider-Man? How in the holy hell does that make any sense?
BarnaclePete - 12/24/2012, 6:36 AM
Why doesnt anyone let things play out a little bit before jumping to hate? This is obviously temporary. Probably last a year, if that. Could be some cool stories out of it. I'm not a Spider-Man reader but I would think it would be cool to see how Doc Ock acts as Spider-Man and Peter Parker. Especially when he is around MJ or other Marvel heroes. At the very least, it would be worth giving a read. If its no good, just stop buying. That's the easiest and best way for fans to tell Marvel they aren't happy.
Wildaniel - 12/24/2012, 6:59 AM
The point of the Ultimate Universe is to do whatever they want to do with a character right? So why would they mess with 616 Spidey whos been around for 50 years?!?
CorndogBurglar - 12/24/2012, 7:54 AM
I think it was a terrible idea to replace Peter's mind with Doc Ock's, but lets be real.

Peter Parker will be back. Anyone that doesn't think so has not read comics for very long. Every major character that gets killed off always returns. Remember when they killed Cap a few years back? What about Batman? What about Superman? Human Torch? Its not really that big of a deal, honestly.

I think they could have had someone other than Ock take his place. That doesn't really make any sense.
VIRILEMAN - 12/24/2012, 8:15 AM
Stick around and see how it goes? The comics have sucked since 2007. How long are we suppose to give it to not suck? And there isn't a question of whether or not they'll eventually go back to normal. It doesn't make it suck less now. Guess I shouldn't complain since I've had more money in my pocket since One More Day.
VIRILEMAN - 12/24/2012, 2:44 PM
But that's the difference between Marvel and DC. Spider-Man IS Peter Parker, the HULK IS Bruce Banner, Iron Man IS Tony Stark. DC characters are just powers like the Lantern or Flash. Marvel is more character driven, you can't just replace Peter, Bruce, or Tony.

@xcrementus
... No ...
There were some good points,
However, disregarding the sheep that is a vast and unfortunate part of society, capitalism is never an acceptable part of story-telling. As a whole, it is shameful, degrading and disrespectful to not only the character, but so many of the fans who deserved better (ironically, see Ultimate Peter Parker's death). Even if temporary, this is trading in the loyal supporters who have helped make this universe what it is for new blood who have never cared enough to be involved (the scales of balance = WTF!?)

As many have proclaimed, don't buy the comics. Its the only way to get these unfathomable idiots to recognize some things are more valuable than money. Just so happens to be, those things will likely very well make you more money (I've seen a few instances of the SSM... DD, AVSM, SSM..; This is HORSERADISH Marvel. Your movies aren't THAT good to justify the massive amounts of missteps you make time and time again against every good move taken.

Nuff Said~
KeefNCookies - 12/24/2012, 10:01 PM
BTW, I think USM's death was meaningful and admirable, unlike this recent pile of poop. That's right. I said poop.

Poop.

I am inches away from hating the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610), but this death in comparison is on par with Heroes Reborn. GFYs!
