Robert Garlen's Highlander Reboot Trilogy Fan Cast
My take on a Highlander Trilogy
Director – Directors are responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film under the overall control of the film producer. They often develop the vision for a film and carry out the vision, deciding how the film should look, in other words they make their vision come to life. They are responsible for turning the script into a sequence of shots. They also direct what tone it should have and what an audience should gain from the cinematic experience. Film directors are responsible for deciding camera angles, lens effects and lighting with the help of the cinematographer and set design with the production designer. They will often take part in hiring the cast and key crew members. They coordinate the actors' moves, or blocking and also may be involved in the writing, financing and editing of a film.
Rian Johnson (Notable Works: Brick, Looper): The Direction in his films are largely spectacular. A director who has sharp angles that move the story and hold real world aesthetic in films, that along with other great visuals that revolve around action and drama bringing real depth to each shot. With a project like Highlander you need a filmmaker like Rian who takes the risks and makes it well worth it.
Sreenwriter – Screenwriters are responsible for researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the screenplay, and delivering it, in the required format, to Development Executives. Screenwriters therefore have great influence over the creative direction and emotional impact of the screenplay and, arguably, of the finished film. They either pitch original ideas to Producers in the hope that they will be optioned or sold, or screenwriters are commissioned by a producer to create a screenplay from a concept, true story, existing screen work or literary work, such as a novel, poem, play, comic book or short story.
Rian Johnson (Notable Works: Brick, Looper): Rian is a filmmaker who knows how to take what could be blank slates and add character to them. Having done amazingly well in the critically acclaimed Looper, he’s shown the ability to create an intellectually complex, yet simple idea, while creating heroes who become monsters and monsters who become heroes. Giving him a shot at a new Highlander trilogy is just a stroke of genius, like giving Batman to Christopher Nolan.
Motion Picture Score – A film score (also sometimes called background music or incidental music) is original music written specifically to accompany a film. The score forms part of the film's soundtrack, which also usually includes dialogue and sound effects, and comprises a number of orchestral, instrumental or choral pieces called cues which are timed to begin and end at specific points during the film in order to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact of the scene in question. Scores are written by one or more composers, under the guidance of the film's director and/or producer, and are then usually performed by an ensemble of musicians – most often comprising an orchestra or band, instrumental soloists, and choir or vocalists – and recorded by a sound engineer.
Alan Silverstri (Notable Works: Predator, Marvel’s Avengers): Silverstri’s music is for lack of a better word, Epic. He’s able to scale his music to the scale of the project, at times it can be fast, small, and thrilling as a fitting theme, or grand, large, and heroic and yet still do as well as the other, Silverstri also has a sensibility in his music, he’s great at doing Dramatic themes, Love themes, and Action. There are dozens of composers who could do a great job with Highlander, but personally I’d like to hand it over to the veteran Silverstri.
Conner Macleod/Russell Nash – Connor Macleod of the clan Macleod, born in the village of Glennfenin by the shores of Loch Shiel. Born 1518, wounded in battle 1536. Trained by the immortals Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez and the Sorcerer Nakano in the effort of vanquishing evil immortals from winning the Prize, In this time he’s had only one wife, Heather Macleod who died of old age. Connor has dedicated himself to making sure that the Immortal who wins the prize will not entomb mankind in a world of darkness. Now in modern day New York he lives as a professor of history and antiquities dealer Russell Nash.
Tom Hardy (Notable Works: Warrior, The Dark Knight Rises): I’ve searched a lot of choices for Highlander fan cast, Many seem to use the likes of James Purfoy, Michael Fassbender, and a favorite of mine James MacAvoy. Using Tom is just getting a great actor who throws himself into the role and puts all he has into it. He’s a fantastic actor who knows how to become the character he plays. With Connor you want an actor with the caliber of physical and acting skill as Hardy, who is notorious for pushing himself far into a role.
Dr. Brenda Wyatt – The second lover to Connor MacLeod, Brenda Wyatt worked for the New York police department as a Forensics Expert. She helped the Highlander survive The Gathering.
Jennifer Carpenter (Notable Works: Quarantine, Dexter): A great actress in her own right who could deliver a fresh characterization of Brenda while making her feel like the same character, which is a rare trait for actresses.
Heather Macleod – Daughter of a blacksmith named Angus MacDonald, Heather married Connor MacLeod in 1537. For some time, Immortal Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez lived with them to train Connor for The Game
Rosamund Pike (Notable Works: Die Another Day, Wrath of the Titans): She is a fantastic actress. Her best works are the ones where she takes a more dramatic side. She does amazing in her performances and could really bring to light the emotional gravitas to her roles.
Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez – Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez was an ancient immortal of Egyptian origin who was beheaded by The Kurgan. He sought out Connor MacLeod, and took him under his wing, teaching him the rules of the Game. Most importantly, he warned Connor about the Kurgan, who had given him his first death, and prepared Connor to face him — believing that Connor would be the one to end his reign of terror.
Idris Elba (Notable Works: Luthor, Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance): This is the most controversial choice. Idris is a fantastic actor who excels in any role he’s in. He just doesn’t know how to give bad performances. Casting him as Juan Ramirez is giving him a role where he gets to losen up and have some fun, doing it a lot less of a serious role. He’s got the swagger, the smile, and the style to play a definitive Ramirez.
Nakano – Nakano was well versed in swordsmanship, unarmed combat and sword making. He was also able to project psychic images into the mind of his opponents, in order to sow confusion.
Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa (Notable Works: Mortal Kombat, Tekken): Casting Nakano is daunting. Mako was Nakano and getting an actor who has a sense of iconography is a necessity. Cary is best known as Shang Tsung and getting him to play Nakano is just getting someone who’s a great actor to play a notable role.
Rachel Ellenstien – Rachel was a Mortal woman and the adopted daughter of Immortal Connor MacLeod. After the death of her parents during World War II, Connor adopted her and raised her as his own. As she grew, she became a close friend and confidant to her father as well becoming his secretary for his shop, Nash Antiques.
Judi Dench (Notable Works: Goldeneye, Casino Royale): Judi’s an amazing actress who’s done a lot to earn her stripes in Hollywood. Being a more mature actor makes her the primary candidate for the role of Rachel. She could very well have been a small child during the 2nd world war and she is fantastic at playing mentor/parental like figures.
Sunda Kastagir – Kastagir was an African Immortal who was also a long time best friend of Connor MacLeod.
Arnold Vosloo (Notable Works: The Mummy, G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra): Born in South Africa, Vosloo was on my list for actors who were being considered for Ramirez, but Elba came along and took that role, I thought about it and I liked Kastagir he was a fun character and Vosloo is an actor who can carry a comedic sense to him but can also do action. I don’t think this is any action of white washing, which is something to take in, I’m casting him as a an actor who I feel is fit for the role.
Amon Fasil – Detecting fellow Immortal Conner MacLeod at a wrestling match he met MacLeod in the car park and challenged him. There after an intense battle, in which he briefly held the upper hand, MacLeod got the best of Fasil and took both his head and his quickening.
Daniel Craig (Notable Works: Casino Royale, Munich): Craig is a great actor who I’d love to have him cameo or take a serious supporting role in as Amon Fasil.
General Morgan Katana – Through many centuries he existed, a friend to Connor. But as he and his wife, a female Immortal, were trapped in battle against the Kurgan, as Connor fled, Katana’s wife took her husband’s sword and forced him into cutting her head off to give him the strength to escape the Kurgan. Since then Katana had blamed Connor for his wife’s murder and vowed vengeance.
Christoph Waltz (Notable Works: Inglorious Basterds, Green Hornet): Casting Waltz is always fun, a great actor. Having him play a serious villain with a tragedy is giving Waltz a challenge. As much as I wanted to see him as Ramirez I really liked the idea of letting him play a villain. I changed Katana radically from his horrendous appearance from Highlander 2 and made him a very different character to make him more interesting and a lot less like a Kurgan knock off.
Kane – A notoriously evil Immortal who was trapped in the cave of the Sorcerer Nakano for hundreds of years. In the 21st Century, after escaping from his centuries-long imprisonment, he set out to eliminate Connor MacLeod and raise an army of immortals to rule over the world.
Gaspard Ulliel (Notable Works: Hannibal Rising, Ultimatum): The problem with Kane as a villain is the same problem with Katana, they were both essentially Kurgan knocks off. Something I had to change and to be honest that always starts with Story, Highlander takes a very historical turn for things. I figured maybe parts of the Bible might be historic but not the Heavy goddy parts, but the story of Kane and Able being Immortals sounded like an interesting way to go. Casting was another way concept to go through. I love Gaspard as an actor, as as Immortals don’t age I figured why not get a young but fantastic actor. He could bring something to the role and really make it his own, he’s groomed to be an amazing actor and I really wanted to place him somewhere in this cast.
The Kurgan/Viktor Krueger – The Kurgan was a powerful and evil Immortal who was considered to be one of the strongest Immortals known on the planet. As powerful and horrific as he is, he has been considered only a dark legend to keep Immortals sense pure as He took the heads of many Immortals throughout his three-thousand years of life. Only a few Immortals ever survived long enough to tell the story of The Kurgan, among them was Connor and Ramirez. His fued with Connor was purely a move for the Prize until his death at the hands of Connor MacLeod.
Joseph Gilgun (Notable Works: Misfits, Lockout): Now Kurgan is probably the hardest to cast, and typically cast by actors who are big, but can’t pull of the character’s inner essence, or being too serious about him in demeanor. I wanted a Kurgan who was crazier then the original and who was a different style. The Original Kurgan was insanity with Brute force. Which Brute force is still there, but what can you really test about a character who can’t die? Well I wanted Gilgun because he plays insanity so well, he plays a character who’s off the chain and frightening. I want the crazy in the Kurgan to be expanded and I really wanted an Immortals strength to be as inner as it is outer and Gilgun can always get more muscular, I don’t want it to be more muscles over style and Gilgun is just someone I wanted to cast for a while and I love the idea of him as Kurgan, he could do a Russian accent and he could really play the most frightening of the immortals.
