First Look: Stills from Ryan Gosling's Directorial Debut - LOST RIVER
Previously titled "How to Catch a Monster", the first images from the dark fantasy have appeared online...and they're intriguing to say the least. Hit the jump to have a peek at what Gosling has in store for his directorial debut.
Previously titled "How To Catch A Monster", Ryan Gosling's (Drive) directorial debut, Lost River, is set to premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. In the lead up to next month's premiere, The Film Stage have provided two very weird stills from the dark fantasy film and it looks like Gosling has something special in store for audiences. Gosling has proven himself as a versatile actor by often making left field choices in what roles he plays and it looks like he'll be continuing that trend as a director.
The fantasy stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendohlson, Matt Smith, Barbara Steele, Iain De Caestecker and Eva Mendes and speaking to Empire, star Iain De Caestecker (Agent Fitz in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) had this to say about the project:
“It’s about this family living in a town called Lost River, which is perhaps a place that was once full of family and happiness and love, and is now this town that’s slowly descending into a place without any hope. This family is holding onto the foundations of their house and everything they think they need to hold onto.”
Sounds kind of straight forward, right? Well take a look at the plot description:
"Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, BILLY, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while BONES, her eighteen-year-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive."
The film has been compared to the works of David Lynch (The Lost Highway) and Terry Gilliam (12 Monkeys) so you can expect it to be quite the head trip. So do you think you'll be checking out Ryan Gosling's first effort as a director? Or will you stick to checking out his abs in front of the camera? Let me know in the comments!
Lost River will be released later in the year and will be distributed by Warner Bros in the US.
