The back-up story in the zero issue of "Sword of Sorcery" gave a fun new twist on the classic tale of Beowulf. The story is set in the future on a post-apocalyptic earth where things like electricity, automotives, and technology have become a thing of the past and people live more like they did during the medieval times. The story focuses on a band of men sent by King Hrothgar to find Beowulf (believed to be a myth) so that he can slay Grendel. When the men approach Beowulf's dwelling, we see that he lives in some sort of high-tech bomb shelter with perimeter sensors and monitors. Beowulf himself actually emerges from some sort of stasis chamber and looks like this:
Sword? Check!
Cybernetic right eye replacement? Check!
Silver Hair? Check!
While he is never called anything other than Beowulf, they do refer to him as the perfect soldier and a general. They also say that he was bred from ancient sorcery (magic being science we haven't discovered yet.. or in their case, science that was forgotten) and being born in a cauldron with steel for bones and lightning for veins, possibly referencing the experiments that were done to Deathstroke.
It is all purely speculation at this point, but if this is actually a future version of Deathstroke, it's an amazing way to tie an ancient character to a comic character and make it relevant in the DCnU.
