It's official! Thor, the epic Marvel tale starring Chris Hemsworth, makes it into the international top five in its box office debut. From THR.com:

Also having a concentrated rollout in Australia was Paramount’s Thor, which kicked off its market run at 220 venues, drawing $5.8 million on the weekend for a mighty per-screen average of $26,363. The market bow was 1% ahead of the opening in Australia of 2008’s Iron Man, said Paramount.

“With the public holidays (Down Under) continuing on Monday and Tuesday, and school holidays in three states through next weekend, Thor should continue to score outstanding results as it heads into its wide international release next weekend, a week ahead of its domestic bow,” said Paramount.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh and costarring Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, Thor is a Marvel Ent. outing, an action drama based on a Stan Lee comic book about a renegade warrior from another realm who winds up defending planet earth. It ranked No. 5 on the weekend overall.

Thor hits United States theaters May 6th!

I know its too earl too celebrate, but so far rotten tomatoes has gave it a 93% fresh rating. I think that its a good sign.
SuspenseSmith - 4/24/2011, 11:55 PM
how come US is last in getting to see it? what up with that? oh well.
xbigvmanx - 4/25/2011, 12:47 AM
@supsensesmith I think they were trying to take advantage of the holiday weekend that foreign countries like Ozland celebrates. The star being from there doesn't hurt either to take advantage of the market.

For all those who say that this number five ranking isn't a good sign: the movie has ONLY been released in Australia. The international top 5 is results from all countries combined. For a film ONLY released in Australia that is excellent! Its earnings from ONE country ranked #5 on a list that includes results from all countries combined. Thats great!
TheSchemer - 4/25/2011, 8:12 AM
Oh yeah, and Fast 5 came out this last weekend (just like Thor) and made 8.3 million, less than 3 million ahead of Thor's 5.8 million. I wonder how many screens Fast 5 showed on compared to Thor. Overall, this news is great!
TheSchemer - 4/25/2011, 8:14 AM
@Magic8.

I think its been painfully obvious that Marvel has been setting the bar high on this one. And early reviews give the film stellar ratings, I've seen multiple reviews say it was better than Iron Man (and I've been avoiding reviews to help me be more surprised). Its ranked 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
Fogs - 4/25/2011, 10:30 AM
@SuperBat77 - because the rest of the world isn't what it was back on the 80s (some places, the 90s). There's real huge amount of money there. Far more than US, since we're talking about hundreds of countries. It's a tendency hollywood's been following for some time now. You can say that by watching action movies, where many times the story (and key events) take place in other places (rio at the beginning of hulk is an example).

They're appealing those audiences to make more money out of it.

And about the topic: "The market bow was 1% ahead of the opening in Australia of 2008’s Iron Man, said Paramount" - that is a glimpse of what's to come. The haters WILL shut up.
PaulRom - 4/25/2011, 10:53 AM
At this rate, it'll hit the top of the North American box office when it hits theaters here. Also, I've only seen a couple of negative reviews out of 30 or so that hit online, so it looks like it's gonna be big in the genre.
superwolverine - 4/25/2011, 12:28 PM
already got my tickets to see it in imax 3D!
TheSchemer - 4/25/2011, 4:15 PM
@magic8:

I don't know how good a movie it is, I haven't seen it. I've never heard of Eastern Promises so I have no clue which one is better, and neither do most of the world's population at this time. But I bet there will be a decent amount of critics who say Thor is a better movie.

I've always thought Rotten Tomatoes did a better job of saying if a movie is good or not not entirely based on if it just a fun movie. Green Hornet had some fun moments and I had some popcorn and fun watching it, but that didn't get it a good review on Rotten Tomatoes (as it shouldn't have as the movie was not that great).

Admittedly I could not produce a review of any sort because I am trying to not read any leading up to seeing the movie myself, I think it will be great, and hope it will, but I will not declare it a good or bad film until I see it.
